Historia
April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford. Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

I am usually a fan, but The It Girl was not "It"
Revisado: 05-04-23
I have absolutely devoured every Ruth Ware book and I'm also a fan of Imogens narration, so I had high hopes going into this book. As such, the disappointment was pretty monumental as I made my way through the story. No spoilers, but I found the main character unsympathetic, her reasoning absolutely baffling at times, and was constantly fuming at how nonsensical her reactions to new information were. Also, (spoiler) I hate the new trend of shoehorning cheating into every novel as an unexpected plot twist or character quirk. It's not fun and cute, it's disgusting.

Artic Monster Thriller
Revisado: 02-23-23
I liked it! This was a fun read, and the narrator is very talented. Towards the end, there were a few bits where I think he got the speaker confused and was using the wrong accent, but it wasn't egregious.
For anyone squeamish, I would warn that there are some rather gory descriptions of injuries. That said, I found them manageable - just didn't listen while I was eating.

Counter Point to Other Reviews
Revisado: 12-24-22
Before I spent a credit on this book, I read all of the reviews available and was apprehensive about buying. I love the bobiverse series and love Ray Porter, so what was stopping me? Well, probably the several reviews saying that if you like the bobiverse to skip this book.
After having read it, I do agree with the reviewers who pointed out that it is not like the bobiverse series. But that has way more to do with this book being (gasp) part of (1) a different series with (2) completely different main characters. I'm not sure why so many reviewers picked up this book, told by a group of young 20 somethings, and expected the tone and focus of the story to be just like the perspective given from an already super intelligent man made into an even more intelligent super AI.
I really, really enjoyed this book. I taught in a school for extremely intelligent high schoolers and Mr. Porter (and the author) strikes the EXACT correct tone for young but wildly smart young people. They make mistakes, they're quirky, they have an odd obsession with coffee and snack food, they're a little neurotic, and they can discuss science and math and physics in the same sentence they then end with a butt joke. And what they don't immediately know, they look up.
If you like Sci-fi, this narrator, this author, and are not going into this expecting a book that exactly mirrors the bobiverse, you'll likely enjoy it. I certainly did- I finished it in a day!

Historia
It’s been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru's brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

Incredible
Revisado: 07-22-22
So many mystery/thrillers follow the same overdone tropes and spoonfeed too many clues to the reader. This book doesn't do that. The characters are complex, sometimes unreliable, and deeply human in a way that is missing in much of the genre. If you are someone who likes it when an author makes it tricky to see twists and turns coming, this is a great choice.
Also, from a southern state myself, something about the story and accented narration both made this such a comforting hug of a book- even despite its genre. I highly recommend it!

Cain's chest was a problem
Revisado: 02-28-22
The story was an incredible and unique premise but MY GOODNESS the repeated mentions of a male characters chest every couple of minutes had me wanting to tear my hair out. The narrator was lovely!

Great Story!
Revisado: 02-22-22
This is the first thing I've read from this author and I'm very happy with it with one exception that I think can be attributed mostly to its age- the women and non-white characters are a bit caricature-y and don't feel like they are developed beyond thier race/gender in quite a lot of the dialogue. Despite that very annoying bit, the story was a great listen!

Historia
A strange plague called the "Gets" is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget - small things at first, like where they left their keys... then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily - and there is no cure. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Marianas Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as "ambrosia" has been discovered - a universal healer, from initial reports.

I was really into this story in the first half, but the tension, suspense and horror really dropped off towards the end. The narrator was good, though!

I don't love love stories...
Revisado: 12-06-21
...but I do love this author, so I gave it a shot. Like Mexican Gothic, I felt that the story was fairly slow moving at first. Once it hit pace, however, it was a lovely ride. My only real complaint (and this is a pet peeve of mine across genres but especially in romances) was that failure to communicate functioned as a main plot device a few times where it just didn't seem all that plausible. Otherwise, this was well written, thought out, and a great story- one might even say it was a beautiful one.

This Author Does Not Miss
Revisado: 11-18-21
I have been systematically absorbing anything from Ms. Garcia since I picked up Mexican Gothic a few months ago. I have not met an author who is as able to transport me into a time, place, and culture quite like she does, and the experience is addicting.
When I found out she had a detective/romance/vampire hybrid of a novel, though, I was skeptical. I am HIGHLY picky when it comes to romance and especially on guard when said romance involves the supernatural (I've never quite gotten over how much I disliked the Twilight novels, I think).
This novel is nothing like any supernatural romance I have read. Garcia has created something highly unique and beautiful. It isn't cheesy, or sappy. It is dark and violent and- maybe surprisingly- an incredible look at loneliness as the great uniter of extremely different souls.

LOVE!
Revisado: 11-03-21
I read Mexican Gothic several months back and quite enjoyed it but never expected this author to come out with something more like a detective thriller set against Mexican political upheaval! This was an excellent ride and I had trouble putting it down, both for the story and for the excellent performance of the voice actors.
