Historia
It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War. The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare.

The best book I've read on WWI
Revisado: 01-27-25
Outstanding research, which must have taken hours. Mr. Gilbert skillfully weaves the overall picture of the war on the highest levels with stories of those in the trenches and on home fronts. He includes stories of women, of different nationalities and ethnic groups, as well as those who would lead our world in the future. He also interweaves the beautiful, terrible poetry of the First World War and its authors. This is outstanding.

Historia
Rivers in the Desert follows the remarkable career of William Mulholland, the visionary who engineered the rise of Los Angeles as the greatest American city west of the Mississippi. He sought to transform the sparse and barren desert into an inhabitable environment by designing the longest aqueduct in the Western Hemisphere, bringing water from the mountains to support a large city. This "fascinating history" chronicles Mulholland's dramatic ascension to wealth and fame - followed by his tragic downfall after the sudden collapse of the dam he had constructed.

Many inaccuracies-do some independent reseach
Revisado: 05-19-24
This book deals primarily with the difficulties of building the infrastructure of transporting the water from the Owns Valley to LA. It pretty well leaves the impression that the San Francis dam failed because of geological factors. It is my understanding that the primary reason the dam failed was because the dam what is designed by a self taught civil engineer – William Mulholland. Although he had used plans for similar dams previously, he made last minute changes to this dam’s dimensions, and failed to realize that changing one part of the plan necessitates adjustment of other parts of the construction of the dam. There is a lot of information ,from reliable sources on this issue. I would encourage you to do some reading on your own on this interesting topic.

Roger Stringer grew up in rural Mississippi, hunting and eating everything from deer to rabbits. When he had two sons, Zac and Justin, he gave them guns and took them to the woods as well. Then one day when the boys were home alone, he got a call from Zac that Justin had been shot. What follows is an intimate and gripping memoir about the shooting’s aftermath. The story moves between the perspectives of Roger and Zac as they take us through their journey of betrayal, redemption, and ultimately confrontation with a company that had kept its corruption a secret for decades.

On August 5, 1949, a crew of 15 of the United States Forest Service's elite airborne firefighters, the Smokejumpers, stepped into the sky above a remote forest fire in the Montana wilderness. Two hours after their jump, all but three of these men were dead or mortally burned. Haunted by these deaths for 40 years, Norman Maclean puts back together the scattered pieces of the Mann Gulch tragedy.

In this masterful book, renowned historian Peter Englund describes this epoch-defining event by weaving together accounts of the average man or woman who experienced it. Drawing on the diaries, journals, and letters of 20 individuals from Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Venezuela, and the United States, Englund's collection of these varied perspectives describes not a course of events but "a world of feeling".

One of the best historical books I’ve read/heard
Revisado: 06-28-23
History on a human level. This is not a narrative of WWI, but the thought# snd words of those who lived it-without the benefit of hindsight. The author did an outstanding job of finding an extraordinary range of characters in different roles and in different theaters of the war - including those involved in the war in Africa, and the Middle East. Both men and women, members of the military, and civilians are represented. Outstanding. Narration must be unobtrusive. It was a little grating when the narrator changed his voice when quoting a woman. He didn’t sound like a woman, and would have been better to omit this styling.

"The Americans" was one of my favorite TV shows. This is apparently the real-life story behind the series. Truth is always a better story than fiction. Outstanding writing and performance of a strong story. You'll want to binge all the episodes at once. You can't interrupt this narrative.

Extremely Academic and Philosophical
Revisado: 12-20-22
I read quite a bit of Russian Revolutionary History and wanted to learn more about the Government House, which was mentioned in other books. This book is over 45 hours, and it is a good 10 hours into it before they get around to conventionalizing the Government House. The author is extremely knowledgeable, and this book is deep in the philosophies of the millennial apocalypse, Judaism, Protestantism, Marxism, Leninism, Stalinism, capitalism, the Reformation, puritanism, Calvinism, de-kulakization, de-Cossackization, Christianity, and more than I can even remember. He also goes into quite lengthy details on Soviets plays and books. He inserts several series of letters from the period into the book, which are apparently unabridged. This is one time I wish I had the hard copy to find out the provenance of these letters. He doesn't touch on Orthodoxy, Tsarism, and Autocracy, which must certainly be key elements of everything the Revolution and the new Socialist state threatened to destroy, but in some ways, it became. It's a very dry book on an interesting subject. The narrator had a bass note to his voice that was a little grating. Would I recommend this book? No. There are other books on this subject that are far more interesting.

Historia
In a field of PhDs, Tim Samaras didn’t attend a day of college in his life. He chased storms with brilliant tools of his own invention and pushed closer to the tornado than anyone else ever dared. When he achieved what meteorologists had deemed impossible, it was as if he had snatched the fire of the gods. Yet even as he transformed the field, Samaras kept on pushing.

Recommended Read
Revisado: 11-15-22
Although the author never met Tim Samaras, he paints a wonderful portrait of the man - his genius, obsessions, strengths, and flaws. For that matter, every "character" in the book is portrayed sympathetically with their own strengths and weaknesses. The science of meteorology is intense, but as a reader, you never feel intimidated by the science. It's a short book and definitely worth the time. Bonus - I was surprised to find mention of the tornados that threatened my hometown in the book and its importance in the research. I well remember the day the storm chasers descended about 1 pm on our town. You knew just by looking at the crowd it was going to be a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad day.

...And What Do You Do? is a hard-hitting analysis of the royal family, exposing its extravagant use of public money and the highly dubious behaviour of some among its ranks, whilst being critical of the knee-jerk sycophancy shown by the press and politicians. Baker also considers the wider role the royals play in society, including the link with House of Lords reform, and the constitutional position of the monarch, which is important given Prince Charles’ present and intended approach.

The author is extremely negative about the royal family, although he did find some positive things to say about Meghan Markle. He certainly has a lot of axes to grind with the royal family. This book was not entertaining or enjoyable in the least.

From June of 2019 until his firing by President Trump after the November 2020 election, Secretary Mark T. Esper led the Department of Defense through an unprecedented time in history—a period marked by growing threats and conflict abroad, a global pandemic unseen in a century, the greatest domestic unrest in two generations, and a White House seemingly bent on breaking accepted norms and conventions for political advantage. A Sacred Oath is Secretary Esper’s unvarnished and candid memoir of those extraordinary and dangerous times, and includes events and moments never before told.

Revisado: 10-26-22
20 Hours of listening to an exhausting recounting of everything he accomplished as Secretary of Defense, Active military, including National Guard and Reserves, working as a congressional aide. Mr.Esper is certainly not a modest man regarding his personal qualities or his service. He did his duty to the country. I thank him for that. I wouldn't recommend this book. It's tedious.
