Historia
In the canton of Yarrowdale, at the very edge of the Empire’s reach, a Treasury officer has disappeared into thin air—vanishing from a room within a heavily guarded tower, its door and windows locked from the inside. To solve the case, the Empire calls on its most brilliant and mercurial detective, the great Ana Dolabra. At her side, as always, is her bemused assistant Dinios Kol. Ana soon discovers that they are investigating not a disappearance but a murder—and one of surpassing cunning, carried out by an opponent who can pass through warded doors like a ghost.

Greedy for more!
Revisado: 04-28-25
This author’s writing never ceases to amaze me in its complexity, and its ability to endure through an entire novel without any dull or slow parts.
The stories of Ana and Din are just wonderful. My mind spins as I can see each new bit that is introduced and I fall in love over and over again with the characters throughout. I greedily look forward to the next book in this series.

Broke my Heart
Revisado: 02-07-25
This book! So much more than I expected and at the same time, a perfect installment in the series. My heart broke so many times I can’t even believe I didn’t stop listening. But I’m so glad I didn’t. The ending leaves so much more to be said!

Unexpected yet Right
Revisado: 01-22-25
I liked the way that the story jumped back-and-forth in time but always let you know right where you were. I enjoyed the female characters in the story a lot. It would’ve been easy to villainize some and to make others be victims, but that doesn’t really happen. I’m not usually a mystery reader, but this one was pretty good.

Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Unexpectedly Tender
Revisado: 01-03-25
The narration of this novel is just beautiful. The story itself weaves and wanders like a small stream, offering the listener space to absorb the nuances of the writing.
I especially enjoyed the visuals of the kestrel and the description of young Agnes. She played such a huge roll throughout the novel and her change from maiden to mother and wife was beautifully grown.

A little more depth please
Revisado: 10-04-24
I’ve read several books on magic and my fair share of fantasy, and so I had preconceived ideas of what this book might be like before I listened.
I wish that there would’ve been a little bit more depth into the events prior to the book starting, as well as the witches themselves. I realize this book was not about the witches as much as it was the hunter, but it still would’ve added something to sink one’s teeth into.
Not sure if I’ll listen to the second one or not, though the ending of this one was pretty great.

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

My favorite one yet!
Revisado: 09-22-24
Having read all of the previous books in this series, I say with confidence that this one is my favorite! I love the way that Debra Harkness has turned back to Diana‘s roots and allowed us to find out more about her through her family. Way of sprinkling detail through every scene is so unique and makes her work. Just a delicious read. I look forward to the next in this series!

Honest, flawed characters
Revisado: 08-24-24
I enjoyed the characters in this book. They owned up to their flaws and each of them had their own life and dark sides. The story was not fairytale, perfect, and there was definitely some memorable parts. Bone dog was one of my favorite characters, and some of the original parts of the story really put some great pictures in my mind.

Witches and vampires and werewolves oh my!
Revisado: 08-18-24
I enjoyed hearing something unexpected. The bits and pieces of Russian history added a layer of originality. Unfortunately, the story did not capture me very well. I was hoping to hear more about the camera and Petra. But there was very little of that.

Not the best
Revisado: 08-07-24
Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books of all time. And it’s the reason why I chose this book upon reading the description that said it was similar. The similarities were scant, and the story itself mediocre. I really wanted to like the main character. And there were parts of her I did like, but the story was so flimsy and lacked backbone. Unfortunately, not a great read.

This sprawling story took me by surprise. The gorgeous writing accompanied it along the way. A beautifully written tale of tragedy, love, endurance, and humanity. One for the keepers shelf for sure.
