Historia
When Jemima, a young orphaned blue jay, is brought to wildlife rehabilitator Julie Zickefoose, she is a virtually tailless, palm-sized bundle of gray-blue fluff. But she is starved and very sick. Julie’s constant care brings her around, and as Jemima is raised for eventual release, she takes over the house and the rest of the author's summer. Emotional and honest, Saving Jemima is a universal story of the communion between a wild creature and the human chosen to raise it.

Seeing what's in front of you
Revisado: 12-19-19
Julie Zickefoose was already my hero before I listened to this book. But this story of rescuing a baby bird, nothing new for Julie, is really about how to see the natural world with different eyes. Where most of us would see a single flock of blue jays, Julie can see individual jays. She spends some time in this book talking about how she does that. Whether or not I ever learn to tell one bird from another, it's quite an inspiration to hear what is possible for a naturalist like Julie. In her narrative, she includes just enough personal details to understand what else is going on in her life besides baby bird rescue. There was a lot going on. I hope Julie does write her big book of blue jays someday.

Historia
In Hoffa’s Shadow tells the moving story of how Goldsmith reunited with the stepfather he’d disowned and then set out to unravel one of the 20th century’s most persistent mysteries and Chuckie’s role in it. Along the way, Goldsmith explores Hoffa’s rise and fall and why the golden age of blue-collar America came to an end, while also casting new light on the century-old surveillance state, the architects of Hoffa’s disappearance, and the heartrending complexities of love and loyalty.

A story that has it all
Revisado: 10-24-19
Growing up in the 1950's with photos of Hoffa in the Saturday Evening Post wearing his trademark white socks with business clothes, I was fascinated by his fame due in part to the hearings where Bobby Kennedy threw his weight around. Hoffa's disappearance in 1975 was predictable given his mob ties, and we are all fascinated by people who disappear and never resurface. But this story has more--a stepson who distanced himself from a loving stepfather and became a Federal prosecutor. More than I ever suspected about our government's wiretapping of the Mafia. Bobby Kennedy's obsession with convicting Hoffa of a crime, any crime. What may have been the sale of Hoffa's pardon by the Nixon administration for $1M in cash, perhaps the same cash used to pay off the Watergate burglars. Legality of the Stellar Wind surveillance program as described by James Comey in 2018. In Hoffa's Shadow is definitely a "Best of 2019" for me.

How often do you find utter honesty and rueful humor from an author who can rip your heart out? Tommy gives it all to us straight and true. As a serious eater myself, my mouth watered over the book's food descriptions. The author's narration enhances the book. I did not want this story to end.

Historia
Inheritance is an audiobook about secrets - secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is the story of a woman's urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than 50 years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history.

What a story!
Revisado: 01-27-19
I'm a DNA geek so I was prepared to like this book, but it was so much more than truth unveiled by DNA. Love the author's narrative skill, seamlessly switching back and forth between the times of her life and those of her parents, and all of it laced with the excitement of finding new relatives. The audiobook narration by the author added to the impact of the book. Agree with another reviewer that the author's mother wins the prize for most fascinating character. The story leaves us wanting more of her, from a safe distance.

Historia
Nora and Theresa Flynn are 21 and 17 when they leave their small village in Ireland and journey to America. Nora is the responsible sister; she's shy and serious and engaged to a man she isn't sure that she loves. Theresa is gregarious; she is thrilled by their new life in Boston and besotted with the fashionable dresses and dance halls on Dudley Street. But when Theresa ends up pregnant, Nora is forced to come up with a plan - a decision with repercussions they are both far too young to understand.

Nice book, overdramatic reading
Revisado: 06-22-17
Any additional comments?
With the tight plotting of this book, the last thing needed is the narrator's overly dramatic reading. The story speaks for itself and doesn't need emotion ladled on thickly. It's a tribute to the writing that I was able to finish listening to it despite my dislike of the narration.

Historia
In The Last of the Doughboys, Richard Rubin introduced readers to a forgotten generation of Americans: the men and women who fought and won the First World War. Interviewing the war’s last survivors face-to-face, he knew well the importance of being present if you want to get the real story. But he soon came to realize that to get the whole story, he had to go Over There, too. So he did, and discovered that while most Americans regard that war as dead and gone, to the French, who still live among its ruins and memories, it remains very much alive.

Tour the French countryside of the Great War
Revisado: 04-24-17
Any additional comments?
Richard Rubin takes the listener along on his visits to the battle scenes of 100 years ago in France. His words create pictures that illustrate the military history he describes clearly. His stories of the people affected by the Great War are fascinating. I felt as though I were there with him during his travels through the battlefields and wanted to fly to France to see for myself. I loved this book and Richard Rubin was the perfect narrator for his book. A great achievement.

Historia
Why would a middle-aged businessman who had never even spent the night outdoors, attempt to hike the entire Appalachian Trail? Bill Walker, a former commodities trader in Chicago and London, and an avid walker, had developed a virtual obsession to hike this historic 2,175 mile footpath in one hiking season. In the spring of 2005 he set off from his home state of Georgia, hoping to make it to Mount Katahdin in northern Maine before the arrival of winter.

Hilarious--entertaining as well as informative
Revisado: 07-12-15
What did you love best about Skywalker: Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail?
Skywalker's willingness to laugh at himself and the difficulties he ran into.
What other book might you compare Skywalker: Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail to and why?
There are dozens of other books about hiking the AT. This is the most entertaining one!
What does Bill Walker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Skywalker's slightly amateurish reading voice made this audiobook come alive. I wanted the book to keep going forever.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When his mom drove him to the trail...I loved it. (Mind you, he was in his forties.)
Any additional comments?
Looking forward to listening to his other audiobook(s).

Based on Nixon’s overlooked recordings, New York Times best-selling author John W. Dean connects the dots between what we’ve come to believe about Watergate and what actually happened Watergate forever changed American politics, and in light of the revelations about the NSA’s widespread surveillance program, the scandal has taken on new significance. Yet remarkably, four decades after Nixon was forced to resign, no one has told the full story of his involvement in Watergate.

Revisado: 08-12-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Only if my friend were as immersed in Watergate as I have been.
What did you like best about this story?
The incredible level of detail. And, of course, Joe Barrett's narration.
What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
My favorite narrator, and his Nixon is spot on. He was also the narrator for Thomas Mallon's Watergate: A Novel. and did his usual superb job.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Who could listen for 22 hours? No, it is better in smaller chunks.
Any additional comments?
To a Watergate aficionado, this book is a diamond mine!

Historia
To the outside observer, Salt Lake City seems to be the squeaky-clean “City of Saints” - its nickname since Mormon pioneers first arrived. Its wide roads, huge Mormon temple topped by a horn-blowing angel, and orderly neighborhoods give it the appearance of the ideal American city. But looks can be deceiving. When beautiful socialite Helen Kent Pfalzgraf turns up dead, Salt Lake County Deputy Art Oveson - a twenty-something husband, dad, and devout Mormon just getting his start - finds himself thrust into the role of detective.
