I was conflicted while listening. The author clearly wrote this when she was much older, but she doesn't ever comment from that perspective. I dont know if it's a credit to her or a frustration. She never comments on what she thought 20 years later, just what she thought at the time. The number of times you'll hear the phrase "the man I loved" made me roll my eyes. But then I thought, "this is probably how a 24 year old would think." Only someone in their 20's would think love triumphs over abuse. The entire inner circle of the band was wildly dysfunctional and an embarrassment to themselves. Must have been the daily coke usage. No one sober could be around this and not be disgusted. A little bit ago I finished the SNL audio book and apparently, from 1975-1985 everyone was a coke-head so I guess it was the times. The most shocking thing to me is they did a world-wide tour for Tusk and did not make any money and no one ever found out what happened. The biggest band on the planet, touring for 12 months and no profit? The reader does the high-pitched damsel in distress voice a little too well. At times it got annoying, but I think it was likely accurate for a lost, confused early to mid twenties girl in the late 1970s. The book was very entertaining. Made me almost want to get Mick's book to get his story on the numerous women he cheated with and on and claimed to be in love with every other month . . . again, must have been all the coke.

Just a mind boggling case study in addiction. During the second half it almost gets old since you know the minute he hits a big win, he is going to lose it all at sports and horses. The voices are almost comical. Especially whenever the narrator quotes a woman. I literally laughed out loud when he got to Stephanie’s teenage voice. Billy Baxter’s accent is laughable but in a good way. Overall I highly recommend

Marketed as a poker book, more a "life" book

So many great poker lessons here apply to everyday life. I loved this book. The people who said her voice is difficult to listen to are way off. Her voice is fine. After reading the reviews I expected something horrific, but not once did I think she sounded abnormal in any way. One small criticism, why do New Yorkers think their city is so much better than every other? The first third of the book she is constantly dropping street names and restaurants and museums like it's the only city with these things. I guess you have to be raised there to understand, but the "NYC self-worship/elitism" gets old fast to those of us outside the bubble. It's the city equivalent of Texans telling you how great their state is. Despite this mild annoyance, the book as a whole is fantastic. I'm so happy for the author to have lived this experience and shared it with us.
