Historia
Before the Arrest, Sandy Duplessis had a reasonably good life as a screenwriter in L.A. An old college friend, the charismatic and malicious Peter Todbaum, had become one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. Now, post-Arrest, nothing is what it was. Sandy, who calls himself Journeyman, has landed in rural Maine. There he assists the butcher and delivers the food grown by his sister, Maddy, at her farm. But then Todbaum shows up in an extraordinary vehicle: a retrofitted tunnel-digger powered by a nuclear reactor. Can it be that Todbaum wants to produce one more extravaganza?

A hilarious, Pynchon-esque, dystopian novel. Not for everyone, but an amazing and allegorical take for those interested.

Historia
Humanity has reached a critical moment. Our world is unsettled and rapidly changing, and we face existential risks over the next century. Various outcomes - good and bad - are possible. Yet our approach to the future is characterized by short-term thinking, polarizing debates, alarmist rhetoric, and pessimism. In this short, exhilarating book, renowned scientist and best-selling author Martin Rees argues that humanity’s prospects depend on our taking a very different approach to planning for tomorrow.

Historia
Blending the piercing humor of Alexandra Kleeman and the jagged satire of Black Mirror, an audacious, eerily prescient debut novel that chronicles the rise and fall of a massive high-rise housing complex, and the lives it affected before - and after - its demise. Standing nearly 500 stories tall, Los Verticalés once bustled with life and excitement. Now this marvel of modern architecture and nontraditional urban planning has collapsed into a pile of rubble known as the Heap.

A great debut!
Revisado: 01-13-20
A wonderful first novel that is biting in it's satire and humanity. I read a blurb that compared Adam's writing to Pynchon's, which I initially scoffed at, but this novel is reminiscent of The Crying of Lot 49 in a way. Highly recommend.

An Unsettling Story
Revisado: 10-13-19
This is a beautiful, haunting, and very creepy story that delves into the intricacies of a struggling family. It is remarkably well written and kept me entralled from the first chapter.

Historia
In a world scarred by an apocalyptic past, evoking a time both 2,000 years past and 2,000 years into the future, untold thousands gather for a crusade. Among them, two men and two women are ensnared by a mysterious traveler, Anasûrimbor Kellhus - part warrior, part philosopher, part sorcerous, charismatic presence - from lands long thought dead. The Darkness That Comes Before is a history of this great holy war, and like all histories, the survivors write its conclusion.

Good Dark Fantasy
Revisado: 10-10-19
I really liked the depth with which Bakker built this very dark and very interesting world but I wasn't a huge fan of all the political intrigue and the way that women were reduced to demeaning roles. the only two main female characters are used for sex, one willing and one unwilling. That's it. The audio performance was really good. Overall, I'd give it 3.5 stars (rounding up to four).

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Good Sequel
Revisado: 09-14-19
The Testaments is a good sequel but felt a little shallow in some aspects, particularly in the character of Daisy. On the other hand, I did quite enjoy Aunt Lydia's story and she (as before) is a very intriguing character. Over all good, but not great.

A Wonderful Tale
Revisado: 08-21-19
Two separate stories intertwine gracefully in a western with just a pinch (or two) of the supernatural. Well written, heartbreaking, and enthralling, Inland is an astounding work of art.

Historia
The Moon will soon return. Whether this heralds the destruction of humankind or something worse will depend on two women. Essun has inherited the power of Alabaster Tenring. With it, she hopes to find her daughter Nassun and forge a world in which every orogene child can grow up safe. For Nassun, her mother's mastery of the Obelisk Gate comes too late. She has seen the evil of the world, and accepted what her mother will not admit: That sometimes what is corrupt cannot be cleansed, only destroyed.

Historia
In the North of England, far from the intrusions of cities but not far from civilization, Silvie and her family are living as if they are ancient Britons, surviving by the tools and knowledge of the Iron Age. For two weeks, the length of her father’s vacation, they join an anthropology course set to reenact life in simpler times. The ancient Britons built ghost walls to ward off enemy invaders, rude barricades of stakes topped with ancestral skulls. When the group builds one of its own, they find a spiritual connection to the past. What comes next but human sacrifice?

Revisado: 05-23-19
This story is an affecting parable about Brexit, consent, and masculinity gone awry. It is also a critique of the nostalgia for earlier times and the implications those earlier times carried.
