Historia
From the creator, writer, and executive producer of the HBO series True Detective and soon to be a major motion picture comes a dark and visceral novel set along the wastelands of Galveston. On the same day Roy Cady is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he learns that his employer has put a hit out on him. After narrowly escaping an attempt on his life, Cady goes on the run with a young prostitute named Rocky and her three-year-old sister, from New Orleans to Galveston, Texas. But though they run, they cannot hide in this explosive, atmospheric, impossible-to-pause thrill ride.

Wow, this book was boring...
Revisado: 09-12-24
-No or only minor spoilers, I discuss some very general plot points.-
Maybe it's just me.
I found this book after googling "books like Blood Meridian"
This book was nothing like Blood Meridian. Blood Meridian was an ugly story beautifully told. It was a hot, hard look into raw human nature at its worst. It was gritty, strange, dark, bleak, nihilistic...
This book was boring. My god, it wouldn't end, and it wasn't even that long...
The excellent prose everyone is talking about in other reviews? Just go ahead and imagine hours of a 'Chevy truck' cowboy having brooding, moody conversations over endless cigarettes and cheap domestic beer. Most of these conversations are between the main character, Roy a.k.a. "Big Country", and a young prostitute with a terrible life. It doesn't get much better after meeting Roy, but I won't spoil the fun.
In short, the plot was paper thin, the characters were 2-D cardboard cut-outs, and I simply couldn't find anything to like about the main character, Roy. He was a hypocrite and flake. A real trailer park Jesus, complete with his sacrifice to wash clean the sins of lesser characters.
Too bad its about 2 hours of interesting events sandwiched between about 5 hours of tedious conversations and philosophical musings. Yawn.

Historia
In the early days of the Cold War, a spirit of desperate scientific rivalry birthed a different kind of space race: not the race to outer space that we all know, but a race to master the inner space of the human body. While surgeons on either side of the Iron Curtain competed to become the first to transplant organs like the kidney and heart, a young American neurosurgeon had an even more ambitious thought: Why not transplant the brain?

Good book, goofy narrator...
Revisado: 05-10-23
Narrator reads slow, pauses too long, and mispronounces Macaque for half the book before switching it up and getting it right.
