Is this a YA Title?
Revisado: 03-18-25
I can't find a speed for this narrator. I can't get interested enough in the characters to forget the narrator, nor entranced by the voice enough to get past weak character development.
I certainly can't figure out what about Kristin Hannah so delights my girlfriend! Chapter 5 delete, free or no. This is the 2nd book I have tried; I'm sure it's great for another listener.

Historia
The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.

The masters of dialogue let's one just fall into the story. So many excellent hours of listening. I am in, some 280+ hours by my estimate. Great storytelling. Epic.

Historia
Greg Mortenson has built a global reputation as a selfless humanitarian and children's crusader, and he's been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is also not what he appears to be. As acclaimed author Jon Krakauer discovered, Mortenson has not only fabricated substantial parts of his bestselling books, but has also misused millions of dollars donated by unsuspecting admirers like Krakauer himself. This is the tragic tale of good intentions gone very wrong.

A very negative book, by virtue of the subject matter. I am left needing a more uplifting, but equally well-written, Krakauer book. On to Eiger Dreams!!

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

The storytelling is winding and canbe hard to follow if you are listening without focusing. This is one to listen to fully.

Historia
When human bones are found beneath an old chapel in the woods, evidence suggests the remains could be linked to the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen. Homicide detective Jane Munro—pregnant and acutely attuned to the preciousness of life—hopes the grim discovery will finally bring closure to the girl’s family. But for a group of Annalise’s old friends, once dubbed the Shoreview Six by the media, it threatens to expose a terrible pledge made on an autumn night forty-seven years ago.

Cannot Finish
Revisado: 07-24-24
Apparently, I don't like what others like. This is rated for 'exceptional narration'?? If I were 17, maybe. I tried faster, to no avail.
Chapter 4 was all I could do. I don't care what happens to the bones or any of the characters; I'm throwing in the towel.

Historia
If society fell apart, could your family survive? Jim Powell thought he was ready. He was a regular guy who travelled a lot for work and hated every second he was away from his young family. But when ISIS operatives unleashed a coordinated attack on America’s infrastructure, his entire world shattered. The electrical grid collapsed, communication networks were damaged, critical bridges and dams were destroyed, and major fuel refineries have gone up in massive fiery clouds.

Dialogue much?
Revisado: 06-29-24
WHO talks like this?? Just awful dialogue between characters, like they are puppets being used to teach grown ups about prepper stuff.
I cannot figure out why all the 'sets' these days, when the author should have stopped at one. Money? Oh maybe. I also cannot figure out why I bought this.
Couldn't finish, unlike me. Just UGH.

Historia
On September 1, 1894, two forest fires converged on the town of Hinckley, Minnesota, trapping over 2,000 people. Daniel J. Brown recounts the events surrounding the fire in the first and only book to chronicle the dramatic story that unfolded. Whereas Oregon's famous "Biscuit" fire in 2002 burned 350,000 acres in one week, the Hinckley fire did the same damage in five hours. The fire created its own weather, including hurricane-strength winds, bubbles of plasmalike glowing gas, and 200-foot-tall flames.

In Times of Conflagration...
Revisado: 06-12-24
This disaster was unknown to me but applies to our current, warming earth. Since I live in Oregon, I have great concern that we will see a super fire in our lifetime. This book helps confirm that I am leaving well before the 'GO NOW' warnings that we enjoy in this modern age. Certainly a cautionary tale.

Very Tabloid in Tone
Revisado: 06-03-24
I guess I am accustomed to more story telling, or a less sensational tone? Maybe it's the narrator? 20inutes in and I feel like I am reading The Enquirer. Not for me, although I have an interest in the subject.

Historia
One of the most acclaimed books of our time - the definitive Vietnam War exposé and the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. When he came to Vietnam in 1962, Lieutenant Colonel John Paul Vann was the one clear-sighted participant in an enterprise riddled with arrogance and self-deception, a charismatic soldier who put his life and career on the line in an attempt to convince his superiors that the war should be fought another way. By the time he died in 1972, Vann had embraced the follies he once decried. He died believing that the war had been won.

Bronson Pinchot is Good
Revisado: 01-18-24
The books decline as one proceeds. In the first book, the story, phrasing and verbiage are fresh and not so trite as (Book 3) " his heart hammered against ...his chest". Thesaurus!! There are other ways to say the things that have been said forever.
Trying to get through 3. But the manly stallion, Obsidian, is haunting me. Maybe stop at 2 books. All these 'book 24' in the Huntsman Series' is just pulp fiction. Quality, like American Dirt, please.
