A shifting perspective

The author has used a technique that invites the listener to stay with the author's analysis- right up to the point of reaching a decision or a choice he should make; then "out of the blue" he changes the ground rules and introduces or withholds an action or inaction that is either contrary or at least not exactly congruent with the heretofore assessment. It is a verbal "sleight of hand" that causes the reader to doubt the author's forthrightness. It is cleverly done, but it leaves me wondering about the author's intent. As his story progresses, the author proves to be quite elusive and perhaps self-delusional.

This is poorly delivered at a pedestrian pace by the globe-trotting author, Sanjay Gupta. It borrows generously from the work of many past and current experts in science and medicine, with particular attention to the brain.

Keep Sharp brings nothing new, except the realization that Dr Gupta has identified the Brain as a worthy focus of his journalistic skills. It is obviously meant to be a big money earner. I just hope that the author has taken legal advice on the limits of plagiarism. Much of the material may well have been published elsewhere. At best, it does a decent job of organizing the material on the topic. Medical students may benefit from this aspect of the book.

However, overall, the book is a massive disappointment to anyone who wants to know about how to keep her or his brain sharp, now or when age slows them down.

It may be more successful as a business model on how to be smart and make money by posing as an expert on a subject, and yet to stay within the law.

Maybe it take a sharp brain to be a smart businessman.

Judge for yourself.

This thoughtful and lucid book on Jung's life and work is comprehensive and well written. It paints a picture of achievements by the 20th century giants of Western philosophies of the mind. It positions Jung as the central advocate of consciousness as a layered reality reaching backwards in time across millennia and forward to a potential new era for humankind. Mark Vernon hints at a future of profound linkages between our human culture and us, as individuals, with the infinite cosmos that is God. This is an optimistic and coherent conclusion.
