Historia
Your mom probably told you it's what on the inside that counts. Well, then she was never a competitive figure skater. Olympic medalist Adam Rippon has been making it pretty for the judges even when, just below the surface, everything was an absolute mess. From traveling to practices on the Greyhound bus next to ex convicts to being so poor he could only afford to eat the free apples at his gym, Rippon got through the toughest times with a smile on his face, a glint in his eye, and quip ready for anyone listening. Beautiful on the Outside looks at his journey.

The most hilarious memoir I’ve ever read!
Revisado: 11-07-19
Adam Rippon not only kills it as an author but also on his audiobook performance. Listening to memoirs read by the author is my jam and I don’t remember ever laughing out loud so often as I did listening to Adam. Perfect mix of inspiration and hilarity!

Fascinating premise
Revisado: 05-29-19
The premise of the novel is quite fascinating (think Afro-centric Xmen during the time of the slavery). Unfortunately, the plot and the character dynamics grow repetitive after a while. The topics and themes addressed in the novel, in terms of gender, racial, ethnic, and sexual identities, are very compelling; I just wished it had been a more captivating read (at least compared to Butler’s Kindred, which is truly phenomenal in both form and content).

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Amazing story and storytelling!
Revisado: 11-26-17
Trevor Noah is so funny and emotive while talking about his truly remarkable childhood.
Also, I learned so much about South African society! Interestingly enough, Noah’s portrayal indirectly sheds light on race and racism in today’s United States. This is a truly extraordinary listen!

In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

A bit of a letdown
Revisado: 02-01-17
I love Steve Martin from his movies, where he always cracks me up. Unfortunately, that's not why happened while I was listening to this memoir. Although there were some funny bits, the delivery was much more muted than I thought it would be. It's interesting as a sociohistorical document, I guess...but I missed laughing out loud.

Historia
In celebration of the week-long, once-in-a-decade rite of Apert, the fras and suurs prepare to venture outside the concent's gates - opening them wide at the same time to welcome the curious "extras" in. During his first Apert as a fra, Erasmus eagerly anticipates reconnecting with the landmarks and family he hasn't seen since he was "collected". But before the week is out, both the existence he abandoned and the one he embraced will stand poised on the perilous brink of cataclysmic change.

Neal Stephensons is such a master world crafter! He interweaves techy scifi and medieval monasticism so seamlessly. If you are a language geek, then you'll get a real kick out of this novel! (Also, great production--the chants between parts were awesome, literally!)

Historia
Fraa Erasmus is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the "Saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities, and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs, bloody violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community.

Thought-provoking piece on human rights in the US!
Revisado: 06-06-16
It's so great to hear this story in her own voice! If you're interested in the human rights, this is a must read. It is so important to start hearing different stories in order to move away from all the essentializing and to start looking at each other as the people that we are. Janet Mock does so in a way that's accessible, entertaining, and heartwarming. Top marks!
