Blackwell may be the sexiest romantic male lead since Rhys in ACOTAR. I enjoyed the story overall, but my one minor critique would be that I wish Ophelia was a bit more like-able. She’s a little hysterical and harsh in a way that has her snapping one minute and swooning the next. It makes the moments she is kind or sincere feel almost confusing; like the author was trying to make her layered by just tacking things on to her. I (as a non OCD haver) did really appreciate the insight into an OCD mind and found that piece of Ophelia very compelling.

Look I’m happy for everyone who was super excited to hear the first book over again from Cas’s perspective, but honestly it just felt kind of lazy to me. I’m not sure why this counts as a part of the series, it just felt a bit lazy to me. An entire book where the main character of the series is basically asleep the entire time? Why?

I’ve been enjoying this series overall but this book was far from the best installment. There’s a ton of action in the very beginning and a ton of action at the end, but the majority of the book felt like a lot of filler without much actually happening. Tons of sex, so much so that I (an avid romance reader) considered fast forwarding through it. Mainly because it just got really repetitive. Same descriptions of parts and pleasures just kind of shuffled and repeated again and again. I also really didn’t enjoy how bro-y Cass suddenly got in this book. He was a breath away from “that’s what she said” jokes at times. It took a lot away from his appeal in general. In any case I’d say this book is only a necessary listen if you’re really invested in the series. Otherwise, read the cliff notes and skip it.

Super fun and a delight of a story, but the narration was a travesty. Hope they get some better people for future books.

I’ve been enjoying listening to Lily Chu’s books as a recent discoverer of her work, and I liked the mystery and rivalry turned romance. In the latter of those two, it felt referential to Emily Henry’s “Beach Read”, maybe my favorite RN of all time. This book didn’t have the depth, character nuance, and passion of “Beach Read”, but it was fun, nonetheless. I like that Ms. Chu takes on her characters’ family lives and other relationships, but I find myself wishing she would flush those out more. I’d be very interested if she ever just decided to write a non-romance focused book about a bi-racial Canadian person dealing with the way society views/treats them while navigating a complex and/or emotionally abusive family relationship.
In “Drop Dead”, I felt unsatisfied with the resolution to Wes’s difficult relationship with his Mom, and I wanted more from Nadine’s management of her overbearing parents.
I also wanted more from the mystery and clue hunt. As a story moving toward the HEA, I wanted part of that for there to be a smoking gun, or for there to be some kind of surprise twist.
I also think John Cho is a fantastic actor, but as a voice actor he felt very monotone. I found myself longing for it all to be done by Phillipa Soo.
Again though, I generally enjoyed it.

I’m a big romance genre fan, but I found this one pretty cringy. The narrator is fantastic, but I was more interested in the super predictable murder mystery than the nonsensical romance. Like, I live for a well written sex scene, and the sex writing was fine, but the draw between the characters was so flimsy. It would have been better if it had just gone full bodice ripper over trying to convince me that the romantic interest between these two characters had weight. It was very “tell” not “show” on all fronts and it had me mumbling, “gross.” under my breath and rolling my eyes at all the moments where heat was supposed to be building and wishing they’d just get back to the murder solving. If you want something easy you won’t care too much about on in the background while you’re doing chores or commuting, by all means go for this. If you actually want a good book, don’t.

Each story was its own pocket universe, but the series of connected stories at the end were beautifully laid out, riveting, and devastating.

I’ve been gobbling up Emily Henry and this is my favorite of the three I’ve “read” so far. I loved the love story for the woman other women like to hate without knowing her, and men are intimidated by without appreciating her. The story felt so genuine, honest, and human. I’m not a rereader generally, but I expect I’ll be reaching for this one again. Also props to Ms. Henry for her continued ability to crank the sexual tension to a fever pitch in the best way.

I really enjoy this listen and it is some spectacularly smoldering sex scenes, but the guy narrator did take me out of it a bit. There is no way that is the voice of a 34 year old man. He sounded more like someone’s 50yo Dad who smokes cigars, not a sexy, youngish bounty hunter. I think it was even more off putting because the female narrator was perfect, they should have just had her do the whole thing. He’s a good narrator, just not for this.
