Maybe I’m jaded in my age, but this is just horrible. #Booktoc made me curious, and I suffered for it. I wanted to DNF, but the spite that I wasted a credit made me listen.
Tropes: beauty and the beast and Hades and Persephone
FMC: unbelievable family dynamics, woe is me, weak lead. When she does take charge, she lacks basic foresight that could actually help her.
MMC: 200 year old “warrior king” but doesn’t grasp basic military or political tactics. Would’ve made more sense to train her and use her to wield ash weapons. Certainly gave the money for it. But no.
Villain: un-ironically immature with shallow levels of psychological understanding. The riddles were guessed in two minutes. The final “torture” wasn’t even worth writing. It would’ve hit so much harder to use family rather than strangers. That’s the usurper that everyone is afraid of?
Narration: did a decent job but I feel bad she was paid to read this.

Cute, lovely, unrealistic

A cute story that involves light psychology and heavy drama. Excellent for a summer read without depth.
It takes place in Texas through you would swear the MC isn’t from Texas though states that’s where they are born and raised.
MC is stated as the best in the field office, but lacks the scope of what professionalism means. What would seem like standard operations are tossed aside for dramatic effect.
All that said, cute story to pass the time.
