Historia
Human history is full of the stories of peasants, subjects, and tribes. Yet the concept of the “citizen” is historically rare — and was among America’s most valued ideals for over two centuries. But without shock treatment, warns historian Victor Davis Hanson, American citizenship as we have known it may soon vanish.

Good book AWFUL READER
Revisado: 02-08-25
A good VDH book, but the reader has absolutely no interest in what he is reading. He might as well be reading a cooking recipe or the dictionary. TERRIBLE READER.

Historia
Paul Dirac was among the great scientific geniuses of the modern age. One of the discoverers of quantum mechanics, the most revolutionary theory of the past century, his contributions had a unique insight, eloquence, clarity, and mathematical power. His prediction of antimatter was one of the greatest triumphs in the history of physics.

Bad reader, makes even talk of murder boring
Revisado: 12-16-24
I learned only a few things I didn't already know, and the reader made even that difficult. Dirac’s brother killed himself and PAM Dirac has a miserable personal life, perhaps had autism. That’s the book. With a short novella at the end about autism. The reader far too emotionally detached from all he read. Thumbs down on this one. 👎

Historia
An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

Another strong Grisham novel
Revisado: 11-22-24
Very enjoyable listen. Grisham is so good letting you get to know the people in his novels, and every chapter is a good one … no superfluous stuff you’re waiting to get through. Just when I thought this was about over, there was an entire section 3 devoted to the “aftermath” - unexpected bc I wasn’t paying attention to where I was in the book, and really filled out everything with all of the characters, and the whole issue of the death penalty and politics. I’m definitely against death penalty now. Grisham didn’t ram things down my throat, and I came away with an enriched view of things, and an appreciation for all the author prompted me to give more thought to. Strong 4 stars from me. Reader was good, too, which helps a lot.

Another great Grisham story
Revisado: 11-20-24
My “4” rating is only compared to the high standard of 5 in John Grisham’s best books in my view. As he says at the end, this is a totally fictional story, but boy the plot and characters are great. As always, you have to get into it a small ways … then it’s hard to stop listening. This one’s a solid 4.

Historia
In his final hours in the Oval Office, the outgoing President grants a controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems Backman, in his power broker heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the world’s most sophisticated satellite surveillance system.

Great characters you get to know
Revisado: 11-16-24
Great spy story, fascinating at times. I always like the way Grisham takes time to develop and get you involved in the people and story, and this story is good from start to finish, and only better as you get more into it.

From the New York Times best-selling author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics, The Order of Time, and Helgoland, a closer look at the mind-bending nature of the Universe. What are the elementary ingredients of the world? Do time and space exist? And what exactly is reality? Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli has spent his life exploring these questions. He tells us how our understanding of reality has changed over the centuries and how physicists think about the structure of the Universe today.

Totally engaging if you’re interested
Revisado: 10-31-24
Kind of an excellent review of everything from Galeo to Newton to Einstein to Dirac, black boles then loop gravity. All the previous might be more engaging and better explained than quantum gravity! And the man has a way with words. In any event, a great listen and I have dozens more to compare this to.

An exhilarating tour of the contemporary quantum landscape, Beyond Weird is a book about what quantum physics really means - and what it doesn't. Science writer Philip Ball offers an up-to-date, accessible account of the quest to come to grips with the most fundamental theory of physical reality, and to explain how its counterintuitive principles underpin the world we experience.

Good talk of the quantum problems
Revisado: 09-25-24
Great to hear a current day assessment of the quantum questions. No new suggested solutions like many worlds, thank goodness, but probably the best explanation I’ve heard of the questions that might lead to more insight, and mainly an excellent book that tries to avoid blowing off things as “weirdness”, with questions not to be asked as Bohr insisted until his death. I’m on my third listen.

Great through chapter 22, then horribly pathetic.
Revisado: 08-28-24
Chapters 1 through 22 are a good story with action and romance and details that make sense to the story. But what happened beginning at chapter 22? Another writer took over, skipped all the pesky details, left out four or five chapters that should have continued what was going on?? Like oh, btw major plot note not mentioned but suddenly appears: main character’s mother is up for Secretary of State and likely to be murdered by the main villain. The entire ending few chapters drone on after the story has ended, then they have the nerve to add an unnecessary, never-ending, virtually pointless “epilogue” that can be summed up “they finally become close, get married and a child is in the way”. I’m being generous with my rating only because I did enjoy the first 21 chapters before the entire story took a deep dive into nothingness. Absolutely horrible. Skip this book, or read the first 21 chapters and envision for yourself how it should proceed from there, because the writer ruins it. The villain just drops dead, after all the talk of him getting what he really deserves. Something went horribly wrong with this writer, and the change from good writing to dribble with no direction is quite abrupt.
