Great brisk story with terrific characters. Karen is a great hero who doesn't need any men to help her. It's a splendid romp.

Now his picture's been carried in the stateside press, and the guys he's been hiding from know exactly where he is. And they're coming to get him - crooked lawyers, men with guns and money, and assorted members of the Detroit mob who are harboring a serious grudge. a great Leonard story
Revisado: 12-18-24
this is a classic mid 70s Elmore Leonard with plenty of action and setting and a little bit of sex. this is marred by the narrators inability to do more than different voices. at certain points it made it very difficult to know which character was which. while he's a decent narrator in terms of pacing, when you have this many characters you really need somebody who's a little bit more versatile.

Pointless and frustrating
Revisado: 12-03-24
this novel seemed almost sadistic in the way it depicted its protagonist. not very much made sense and in the end there was no satisfaction to any of the character arc. The longer I listened to it the less I liked it. if you were looking for a diversion this is not the book for you.

Historia
Helena Pearson. Undeniably beautiful... indisputably rich... incredibly wanton... the perfect client for Travis McGee. He did a big favor for her husband and then for the lady herself. Now Helena is dead, and McGee finds out that she had one last request to make of him: find out why her beautiful daughter, Maurie, keeps trying to kill herself. So, half-convinced that Maurie needs a good doctor and not a devil-may-care beach bum, McGee makes his way to the prosperous town of Fort Courtney, Florida, a respectable, booming, deadly little place.

Convoluted phoned in dreck
Revisado: 11-09-23
I think this was the period when John D was under a lot of pressure from Fawcett to keep cranking out novels. this is a convoluted mass of a story with no solid beginning middle or end. perhaps the worst of all of his books, Travis McGee or otherwise. Petkoff is great.

Decent Period Piece
Revisado: 09-21-23
Towles is finding his way here, threading a needle between F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, and Edna Ferber. The cookie cutter handsome boys grow a bit tiresome, as does the plucky heroine's never say die pluckiness. He's not really sure who these people are, and though he tries to paint an accurate picture of 1938 New York, it's about as accurate as Radio Days. He's not E.L. Doctorow by a long shot, but he's getting closer.

tense story marred by awful narration
Revisado: 04-20-23
I'm adding this guy to my list of people I never want to hear again. his preachy lugubrious tone and lack of any emotion at all takes tense procedural and turns it into a plotting whiny bore fest. anyone else would have been better, even the dreadful Scott brick. this guy reminds me of some sort of lay preacher laying a spidery hand on you and whispering in your ear. it's whiny and weak and has nothing to do with the kind of story this is. You producers need to be ashamed of yourself. if you're going to have a war novel narrated get somebody who sounds like they have been in a war, not this guy. He's awful.

a grim set of cliches
Revisado: 09-24-22
this is the familiar story of an abusive man and the family around him, basically The shining without any likable characters at all. Even the central character is a cartoon combination of pippi longstocking in Harriet the spy with a little bit of Jack London thrown in. yeah I get it that Alaska is harsh, but is everybody there some sort of caricature? and as far as depicting domestic abuse, this one borders on torture porn. The feeling of it is just one grim happening after another with no hope and no redemption. this would be interesting if I gave a damn about any of the characters, but I really hate all of them. what a colossal waste of time.

clunky writing and overlong melodrama
Revisado: 09-13-22
Ernest Hemingway famously despised this novel, and I can see why. Jones is incapable of writing a phrase without larding it full of adverbs. resignedly, slowly, quickly, suddenly, bone shatteringly (my favorite). this should be less of a problem if the story took off but it just takes forever to get to anything you care about at all. The protagonist is a brittle batch of cliches, as are the supporting characters. The one woman is a ridiculous caricature of the barren frigid wife who finds herself with the manly man. this thing made me sick. not only is the story garbage, the style is the worst kind of writing.

Decent entertainment
Revisado: 09-02-22
Towles writes with economy and no specific style. A lot of what he does is gimmicky and almost Hardy boys in its simplicity, but it works in this story. it's definitely a boy's adventure and anybody looking for anything deeper is looking in the wrong place but it's entertaining as an audiobook. The narration is very good.

Historia
A teacher is dead, a boy is missing, and a councilwoman has put a lot of pressure on Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee to find her grandson. Sitting on a rooftop watching sacred clowns perform their antics in a Pueblo ceremony, Chee spots the boy. Then, suddenly, the crowd is in commotion. One of the clowns has been savagely murdered. Without a single clue, Chee and Leaphorn must follow a serpentine trail through the Indian clans and nations, seeking the thread that links two brutal murders, a missing teenager, a band of lobbyists trying to put a toxic dump site on Pueblo land, and an invaluable memento given to the tribes.

phoning it in
Revisado: 08-22-22
by the time the author got to this part of his career he was really checking off the boxes. Leaphorn, check. Chee, check. romantic interest, Navajo cultural insights, a lot of New Mexico vistas. check, check, check. this story is devoid of interest and has no tension whatsoever. it made me long for his early books when he was still exploring. Leaphorn and Chee were much better when he kept them apart.
