Historia
Reminiscent of Diane Ackerman’s The Zookeeper’s Wife, this stunning novel draws from true accounts to shine a light on a period of Holland’s darkest history and bravest heroes. 1942. As war rips through the heart of Holland, childhood friends Josie van Rees and Eliese Linden partner with a few daring citizens to rescue Eliese’s son and hundreds of other Jewish children who await deportation in a converted theater in Amsterdam. But amid their resistance work, Josie and Eliese’s dangerous secrets could derail their friendship and their entire mission.

Confusing
Revisado: 11-20-22
The plot was unlikely and very drawn out. The characters were flat and I didn’t get to care about any of them. It was a chore to get to the end.

More a political vehicle than a piece of literature
Revisado: 10-04-22
The characters were used by the political narrative rather than seeming real people caught up in history. I always read full books, not abridged ones, but this was really too much. Nevertheless, the author did a good job of showing two conflicting ideologies that still bedevil our world today.

Historia
Jana Petken’s extraordinary historical epic, The German Half-Bloods Trilogy, reaches its sweeping, heart-wrenching conclusion. In The German Half-Bloods and The Vogels, Jana Petken followed the turbulent lives of an Anglo-German family as they forged their paths through the Second World War. How could the Germans do what they did?
Revisado: 08-20-22
This is a question that has obsessed me, and it is tackled in such a heart breaking way in this trilogy. It is a question that can never be fully answered, but the nature of the human heart, the best and the worst of it, is laid bare in the stories of the Vogels. I loved it!

Historia
European citizens feel the full force of German injustice, but not all are willing to bend the knee. From France to Poland, Resistance groups fight from the shadows to thwart Nazi rule and hinder their goal to exterminate Jews. In Russia, Wilmot Vogel struggles to survive the ravages of a frigid winter, compounded by the German army’s lack of progress. Hit by a surprise Russian attack on the front lines, however, he finds himself facing an even greater challenge than the freezing weather and Soviet bullets.

Explores the question of personal guilt for the actions taken by one’s country in the context of the lives experienced by people at the time.
