Historia
For over half a century, Banco Popular was one of the most profitable banks in the world—until one day, in 2017, when the Spanish bank suddenly collapsed overnight. When investigative journalist Gareth Gore was dispatched to report on the story, he expected to find yet another case of unbridled capitalist ambition gone wrong. Instead, he uncovered decades of deception that hid one of the most brazen cases of corporate pillaging in history, perpetrated by a group of men sworn to celibacy and self-flagellation who had secretly controlled Popular and abused their positions there.

Revisado: 01-29-25
Published before the 2024 presidential election, based on copious and thorough research, the tenets and means of implementing Project 2025 are effectively laid bare. This oligarchic transformation has been in preparation for decades, right under our noses, long planned, and all wrapped in a not-to-be-questioned veneer of religion and faith, Excellent, page-turner narrative non-fiction.

Historia
Since September 11, 2001, the Western world has been preoccupied with Islam and its role in terrorism. Yet, public debate about the faith is polarized. One camp praises "the religion of peace", while the other claims all Muslims are terrorists. Canadian human rights activist Yasmine Mohammed believes both sides are dangerously wrong. In Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam, Yasmine speaks her truth as a woman born in the Western world yet raised in a fundamentalist Islamic home. Despite being a first-generation Canadian, she never felt at home in the West.

The Inquisition conducted its last execution in 1826-the victim was a Spanish schoolmaster convicted of heresy. But as Cullen Murphy shows in this provocative new work, not only did its offices survive into the twentieth century, in the modern world its spirit is more influential than ever.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Paragon of narrative non-fiction
Revisado: 03-15-24
Wonderful structure, superb research ( including the subplots and temporal context), so well written, correspondingly excellent audio narration. Even more astounding than River of the Gods, which itself is amazing and highly recommended. I am running out of superlatives…. There is so much food for thought and wondering what might have been for the benefit of the nation.

Historia
In the 19th century, the world was Europeanized. In the 20th century, it was Americanized. Now, in the 21st century, the world is being Asianized. The “Asian Century” is even bigger than you think. Far greater than just China, the new Asian system taking shape is a multicivilizational order spanning Saudi Arabia to Japan, Russia to Australia, Turkey to Indonesia - linking five billion people through trade, finance, infrastructure, and diplomatic networks that together represent 40 percent of global GDP.

Good book, bad narrator

Khanna provides a welcome perspective and analysis of the Asianizing world. The narrator, however, mispronounced words in English as well as most of the Asian languages.

The longest book I ever read (actually alternated between Kindle and Audible versions, which didn’t sync very well). The narrator is very talented in expressing the many accents involved.

Delightful and highly recommended
Revisado: 08-04-18
Wonderfully plotted story, part detective, part legal, part historical, part suffragette. Characters are well developed. Educational, too. I learned much about the Parsi community and some new things about Muslim family law. The overly dramatic and enthusiastic reader initially made me wonder whether I would have to read rather than listen, but increasing the speed helped, and I grew used to her cadence after a while; by the end I didn't mind much.

Historia
Michael Skellig is a limo driver waiting for his client in the alley behind an upscale hotel. He's spent the past 28 hours ferrying around Bismarck Avila, a celebrity skateboard mogul who isn't going home any time soon. Suddenly the wind begins to speak to Skellig in the guttural accent of the Chechen torturer he shot through the eye in Yemen a decade ago: Troubletroubletrouble. Skellig has heard these warnings before....
