Historia
Myrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight, married just one year later, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. Medgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation, lynching, violence, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.”

A “Love Story” indeed!
Revisado: 03-07-24
I hated to turn this audiobook off. I knew Joy Reid would approach this subject thoroughly, but I never expected to learn so much. It’s all at once a love story, civics and history lesson. Personally, I’m amazed by how different my life and other Black & Brown people’s lives could have been without this love story. I’m not here to review or spoil, Do yourself a favor… listen to this work. I’m buying the hardcopy and gifting the audiobook to family & friends.

Historia
When Kitty Karr Tate, a White icon of the silver screen, dies and bequeaths her multimillion-dollar estate to the St. John sisters, three young, wealthy Black women, it prompts questions. Lots of questions. A celebrity in her own right, Elise St. John would rather focus on sorting out Kitty’s affairs than deal with the press. But what she discovers in one of Kitty’s journals rocks her world harder than any other brewing scandal could—and between a cheating fiancé and the fallout from a controversial social media post, there are plenty.

It’s easy to be yourself when who and what you are is in vogue. But growing up Black and gay in America has never been easy. Before Billy Porter was slaying red carpets and giving an iconic performance in the celebrated TV show Pose; before he was the Tony Award-winning star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots; and before he was an acclaimed recording artist, actor, playwright, and all-around diva, Porter was a young boy who didn’t fit in.

Historia
After a whirlwind year, Tabitha Walker’s carefully organized plan to achieve the life she wanted—perfect job, dream husband, and stylish home—has gone off the rails. Her checklist now consists of diapers changed (infinite), showers taken (zero), tears cried (buckets), and hours of sleep (what’s that?). Don't get her wrong, Tabby loves her new bundle of joy and motherhood is perhaps the only thing that's consistent for her these days. When the news station announces that they will be hiring outside competitors for the new anchor position, Tabby throws herself into her work.

I pre-ordered & downloaded ASAP. I LOVE these characters! I love the multigenerational component Allen weaves through her novels as well as the culture. Tabby reminds me of a lot of women I know, and it’s refreshing to see our lives represented in literature.

Historia
In the year 2018, it seems as if women’s anger has suddenly erupted into the public conversation. But long before this, women’s anger was not only politically catalytic - but politically problematic. With eloquence and fervor, Rebecca tracks the history of female anger as political fuel - from suffragettes chaining themselves to the White House to office workers vacating their buildings after Clarence Thomas was confirmed to the Supreme Court. She deconstructs society’s (and the media’s) condemnation of female emotion (notably, rage) and the impact of resulting repercussions.

I couldn’t put it down!
Revisado: 10-27-18
It was hard to resist the urge to recommend this book before I finished! I eventually gave up around the 2nd to last chapter and began texting & calling all the important women in my life. I just finished, so I’ll start on the men tomorrow. Traister is respectful, thorough and insightful. She simultaneously reaches back and cites present day examples of the impact women have in shaping the country, despite systemic disenfranchisement without droning on. Seriously, motivational if you aren’t currently politically active, and validates the common anger so many of us experience.

Historia
Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a Midwestern girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire listeners. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers", Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating.

BRAVO & THANK YOU Dr. Lewis
Revisado: 12-18-17
I didn’t hesitate to purchase this book the moment I saw it offered and saved it for my upcoming vacation. I was not disappointed. Some may be taken aback by her language, but I wasn’t bothered one bit. She has a firm grasp of the English language and simply enjoys the F word, as do I, in the right context - and this is it! Life is messy and fabulous and Dr. Jenifer MF’n Lewis has been incredibly brave over the years in sharing hers. She is the “Mother of Black Hollywood” and as she mentions a great Mother Figure to us all! This book is HILARIOUS and heartwarming. I’m recommending it to everyone I love.

Reading this book is a GIFT!
Revisado: 10-13-16
What did you love best about The Underground Railroad (Oprah's Book Club)?
What I loved best was that while the subject matter dealt with slavery, this book didn't contain the descriptions of vicious brutality that were commonplace. They were addressed, but Whitehead spent his time on what was essential to the character.
What does Bahni Turpin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Great question, because I actually read the book and listened to the audio book. Initially, it was important for me to make sure I was pronouncing names properly, later I found myself drawn in by the different voices and her pace. Had I been reading, I think I would have anxiously rushed through some of the more suspenseful sections. Listening to the narration forced me to stay with the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were several places in this book that moved me. That's what surprised me! I expected this to be 'just another slavery book' (please forgive me!) I was surprised in places from beginning to the very ending. I don't want to give anything away.
Any additional comments?
The reason I had a hard copy & audio book was because my husband bought the audio book, not realizing I bought the book. We rarely read the same fictional material. Whitehead does an AMAZING job with these characters, this story. He's caused me to think about a couple things in new and positive ways.
