Historia
Sophia's earliest memory is of drowning. She remembers the darkness of the water and the briny taste as it filled her throat, the sensation of going under. She remembers hands pulling her back to safety. But she doesn't remember who saved her that day. The day her mother died - or so she has always believed. A mysterious call suggesting that her mother might still be alive has lured Sophia to the island of Bitter Rock, hunting for answers as elusive as her own past. But the more Sophia uncovers, the clearer it is that her mother's disappearance is just one of many.

really solid ghost story
Revisado: 06-23-21
slow burner “found narrative” style tale that erupts into a really gripping combination of mystery and ghost story. loved the weaving of character testimony with “video evidence” (will translate really well to a movie, one day, i imagine). at the heart of it all the spook and gore, a really tender story of a mother’s love. performance was good (tho the switch back and forth between narrators was at first a little jarring, it fit very well as the story went on). overall, a really solid story!

Historia
After a bizarre and disturbing incident at the funeral of matriarch Marian Savage, the McCray and Savage families look forward to a restful and relaxing summer at Beldame, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, where three Victorian houses loom over the shimmering beach. Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty. Inside, something deadly lies in wait.

Original… for it’s time.
Revisado: 06-11-21
This is an original take on the classic American Gothic Haunted House trope, and is a decent read (for some added atmosphere, try it while sitting at the beach on vacation). Much of the story (as in, probably 90%) is spent building anticipation for something to happen and, when it finally does, it’s moderately entertaining if not entirely surprising. I was left neither disappointed nor thrilled.
What did leave me disappointed was the stereotypical use of the thematic “Magical Negro” to come to the aid of the characters but, given the time this book was written, this is likely also not surprising.
Again, it’s a good story if you’re looking for a slightly creepy way to pass the time. RC Bray’s narration is excellent and captures great range for the characters.
