Fantastic book with great narration
Revisado: 09-03-24
I’m a big fan of Dr. Ring’s work and have been hoping for some time that his books would be available in audio format. I hadn’t read this one before and thus was really excited about starting it. The narration is fantastic ( perfect tone and performance for the book). The book recounts stories of people who have had NDEs and other similar experiences and it tells their stories in a compelling manner. I hope that Dr. Ring’s other books will soon be available on here, such as Heading Towards Omega.

Historia
One thousand years ago in the valley of Kashmir, a great Tantric master named Ksemaraja wrote his masterpiece: the Pratyabhijna-hrdaya, which means "The Essence of the Recognition Philosophy" - recognition, that is, of oneself as a direct expression of the universal divine Consciousness. Recognition also that this Consciousness is, in truth, all that exists, and that its five fundamental powers of awareness, enjoyment, willing, knowing, and acting are the sacred endowments of every sentient being.

The most powerful book I’ve ever read
Revisado: 09-08-19
I first listened to The Recognition Sutras maybe five months ago, when I was deeply ensnared in a very traumatic situation that my daughter and I were going through. I was dealing with stress on all levels and it was ( and to a degree still is) a very challenging time. My self esteem was basically non existent and I felt hopeless and lost.
However, The Recognition Sutras struck a chord in me and helped me to see my situation from a different angle. I began to reframe my life and circumstances and realized that despite all the hardships I’m going through, I’m somehow in a better place than I was before everything happened. In other words, my circumstances lead me to the spiritual path I’m on and connected me with people who have been nothing short of supportive.
In the book, Ksemaraja breaks down Recognition philosophy and gives various yuktis or actions one can take to deconstruct false views of reality, which we all have. He makes somewhat abstruse concepts about the nature of reality accessible and applicable to daily life. The texts also gives ways one can ‘digest’ and therefore assimilate and in a sense transmute traumatic emotions, which I found Challenging but life changing.
What I especially love about Ksemaraja’s work and tantrik philosophy in general is how it doesn’t assign blame or condemn people, no matter how lost many of us are in our mine constructed worlds. It helps one to lovingly assess one’s vikalpas or stories about life and help one to shift to seeing things sans a filter, where awareness is predominant and untainted by the mind’s stories. It feels like the original self love movement while also not letting us accept our screwed ‘stories’.
Hareesh’s translation is exquisite and his commentary is ( in my opinion) as valuable as the original text itself. I highly recommend reading Tantra Illuminated in addition to The Recognition Sutras as it gives a helpful, in depth yet not overwhelming overview of tantrick philosophy’s sects/sampradayas.
I truly hope more people discover this book and read it often. I own it in all formats and I’ve listened to the audiobook four times, especially before I meditate. I study the book daily and feel that every time I read it or listen to Hareesh’s narration, I marinate my mind in powerful thoughts about the nature of reality and where I/We fit into it. I feel less lost and more hopeful.
I honestly can’t wait for Hareesh to translate and publish more tantrik texts!

Very basic intro info
Revisado: 07-20-19
If you are completely new to the idea of creating a personal brand and becoming an influencer ( making a living off of said brand through sponsored content and brand partnerships), this book may be useful as it gives a glimpse into influencerpreneurship, including interviews with notable instagram influencers. However, if you’re looking for concrete, actionable tips on how to create and grow your personal brand, sadly this book falls short.
I’m in the intermediate area ( I have about 50k followed on Pinterest and on my largest Instagram about 8k; I also run a FB group for bloggers with about 30k members) and am looking to switch my business model from consulting to partnerships. I’ve done some in the past and worked with brands but it was the smaller of my income streams. I bought this book thinking I’d get concrete and actionable tips on how to grow my follower base and learn how to better collab with brands, and while while he author does give some good info on what brands are looking for, it was info I was aware ( being professional, creating a press kit, etc). In other words, i didn’t get much out of the book that I can actually implement and the content is very introductory.

Great concept but summed up in the intro
Revisado: 07-08-19
I absolutely love the concept that this book introduces: using an avatar or alter ego to do things that our everyday egos deem to be too difficult, too big, too scary etc. I think this is a powerful and useful idea, and the author gives many examples of how his clients and peers are using alter egos they create in their daily lives, especially in sports and business situations.
However, I feel that one just needs to read the intro chapter or so to get the entire concept down. The rest of the book is just reiterating over and over why you should create an alter ego. And while it does give other examples of people’s alter egos and how they use them, I feel it’s unnecessary and rather repetitive and redundant.

What do you want to be when you grow up? It's a familiar question we're all asked as kids. While seemingly harmless, the question has unintended consequences. It can make you feel like you need to choose one job, one passion, one thing to be about. Guess what? You don't. Having a lot of different interests, projects and curiosities doesn't make you a "jack-of-all-trades, master of none". Your endless curiosity doesn't mean you are broken or flaky.

Must-read for multipotentialites
Revisado: 08-05-17
This is a fantastic book for people like me that have a myriad of interests and passions, and that want to pursue several of them professionally. The world promotes us to focus on one career choice and looks down upon those of us with a wide skill set or range of expertise. And there is virtually no promotion of life-long learning, at least not in general. But this book helps you break free from the less is more conditioning and helps you to realize that having many passions and skills is actually a good thing, and gives you tips on how to pursue 'passion projects' or become an entrepreneur.

Would you like to be happier? No matter who you are or how you feel, chances are you would answer yes. And Jennifer Dukes Lee was no different. For years, she wrestled with a constant nagging sense that she wasn't as happy as she could be. At the same time, she felt guilty for wanting something so "shallow". After all, doesn't God only care that we find joy in our circumstances? Or is it possible that God really does want us to be happy?

What makes you happy?
Revisado: 03-27-17
Would you listen to The Happiness Dare again? Why?
Yes, absolutely! It was very inspiring and made me realize that we all have different happiness motivators, ie I'm a 'thinker' and my husband is a 'doer'. He is genuinely happy while doing things that would drain my energy, like doing housework ( lol). It helped give me permission to accept I need to take ample time to read enlightening books and listen to podcasts or watch documentaries or engage in thought-provoking conversations. For years, I felt like doing this was a form of procrastination ( which it sometimes is haha) and I felt like I was being lazy, but if I don't pursue this I am genuinely unhappy. In fact, when I've been my least happy in life it was because I attempted to fit in and be as 'productive' as possible and totally let go of that which helps me feel like myself.
Any additional comments?
I wanted to make one comment with regards to what I think the book is lacking: there is no 'creative' or artist section. There is a thinker, doer, etc but for some reason, the author doesn't have creativity as one of the driving forces for making a person happy, and I think this really needed to be there. I'm not alone in finding happiness through writing a poem or taking a photo, right?

Why have history's greatest minds - from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson along with today's top performers, from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities - embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise. The Daily Stoic offers a daily devotional of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, absolutely! I regularly listen to this book at night, prior to going to bed. It makes stoic concepts easy to digest by breaking them down into bite-sized, themed quips that are accompanied by the author's point of view with regards to how to apply them to your own life.

An introduction to lifestyle design
Revisado: 03-27-17
Would you listen to The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich again? Why?
Any additional comments?
Writing this review is a somewhat significant moment for me as when I first read this book ( many years ago), my family and I were yearning to have more time and to work from home. From literally years of stumbling and failing and attempting to find the right business model and way to market our services, we achieved our dreams. And while we in no way work four hours a week nor have a drop shipping type of business, this book was the start of it all.
Let me explain. In 2008 or so, my husband and I decided we wanted a new life experience and to raise our daughter in Asia, so we packed up our bags and moved to South Korea. This may sound random, but we had been tutoring and hosting exchange students for years, so my husband decided to give teaching in a classroom setting a go.
We loved living in Korea, but the long work hours were practically killing my husband and putting a strain on our marriage. On top of that, I was at home in our apartment with a toddler, and things were just as stressful ( and tiring) as when we were back in Los Angeles. After he finished teaching, we decided to move to Italy, closer to where I grew up.
It was there that I first read 4 Hour Work Week.
I had very little experience in business, but I believed in the concepts Tim discusses in the book, and lifestyle design was EXACTLY what my husband and I wanted; we aren't driven by money, we just want to spend time together as a family and do what we love.
I'd like to tell you that we easily were able to grasp the concepts in 4HWW but sadly it took years of trial and error to find out a biz model that worked for us, and to build our brands and find our Ideal Clients. We only lived in Italy for six months ( so we basically were living the digital nomad life) and moved to Thailand, where we had vacationed on our honeymoon. My husband started teaching again, and I devoted as much time as possible to learning marketing and how to market myself as a freelance writer.
My husband and I have been working from home for about 4 years now and are literally living our dreams. We may not make a ton of money, but again, our goal was and always will be to prioritize spending time together. I've also achieved a huge, huge dream of mine and am now writing for one of the leading travel publications in the world.
What's my point in sharing this?
I was not able to achieve the complete 4HWW and most people aren't, but I was able to use the concepts in the book to succeed. We 'worldschool' our daughter and we follow a lifestyle design and digital nomad style life, in a way ( we travel often in SE Asia). We also took Tim's advice to heart with regards to focusing on goals or experiences other than a set amount of money, ie if you want to fly to Bali and go on a two week vacation, tally up how much that costs and come up with a plan to earn that amount.
Another great book to help you figure out how you can be self-employed or a freelancer is 100 Dollar Start Up. That book is very in depth and features great stories from brick and mortar businesses and a few solopreneurs.
If you value lifestyle design and want to prioritize time spent with loved ones, I also recommend Essentialism.
All of these books and 4HWW won't help you if you don't devote yourself to finding out who you can serve and how, aka finding out the right biz model and ideal client. You will have to do a lot of hard work, but it's so worth it!

A truly life-changing book
Revisado: 03-22-17
I regularly listen to this as well as the radio segments from Ernest Holmes, which are also available on Audible. I actually listen to Holmes every evening, and spend time before bed pondering his teachings on God, man, mind, and freedom. I've come to the conclusion that his teachings ( and that of other New Thought authors and Vedantists too) are the most potent and life-changing of religious philosophies, particularly because they don't go the condemnation/judgement/ karmic route of traditional religions and focus of how we can change our lives simply by changing our thoughts. Another great book to back up this concept is Evolve Your Mind by Dr. Joe dispanzia ( not sure if I spelled his last name correctly but the book is on Audible).
