Historia
Hardly anyone ever leaves Des Moines, Iowa. But Bill Bryson did, and after 10 years in England he decided to go home, to a foreign country. In an ageing Chevrolet Chevette, he drove nearly 14,000 miles through 38 states to compile this hilarious and perceptive state-of-the-nation report on small-town America.

A little less of the usual Bill
Revisado: 03-26-23
Interesting travels across the US, but with a slightly less funny, slightly darker and perhaps more arrogant Bill.

Historia
The real stories behind the scenery of America’s national parks. For 12 years, Andrea Lankford lived in the biggest, most impressive national parks in the world, working a job she loved. She chaperoned baby sea turtles on their journey to sea. She pursued bad guys on her galloping patrol horse. She jumped into rescue helicopters bound for the heart of the Grand Canyon. She won arguments with bears. She slept with a few too many rattlesnakes. Hell yeah, it was the best job in the world! Fortunately, Andrea survived it.

Revisado: 12-16-19
A behind the scenes look at what our dedicated parks professionals have to deal with - the good, the bad and the very unfortunate. Like it or not, when millions of people visit anywhere, sometimes things don’t always go as planned. Next time you’re visiting your favorite park; remember that the staff there might have just dealt with a serious issue so you could enjoy your picnic. Certainly makes one feel our valuable park systems are under resourced across the country. Support your federal, state and local parks!

Historia
Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body - how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."

Interesting book about a fascinating man
Revisado: 12-16-19
Interesting book about a fascinating man. He was a genius and a visionary who wasn’t properly diagnosed or treated - in fact, seems his doctors were delinquent and negligent in his care, rather content to continue milking him for his money rather than trying to cure him. One has to wonder what other advances or technological improvements he would have made had he lived longer.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

And unbelievably fantastic book!
Revisado: 10-03-19
Having spent several years backpacking in Idaho; I am familiar with many of the places the author references; and actually was within 30 minute drive of Bucks Peak, which made her story that much more tangible for me; but what is astonishing, is her ability to break free from the ties that bonded her to a destructive lifestyle and become her own person; who earned a PhD - further proof that where there is a will there is a way. This is truly an amazing and inspiring history; that I recommend everyone read.

Historia
At the end of the last century, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was a booming coal-and-steel town filled with hardworking families striving for a piece of the nation's burgeoning industrial prosperity. In the mountains above Johnstown, an old earth dam had been hastily rebuilt to create a lake for an exclusive summer resort patronized by the tycoons of that same industrial prosperity, among them Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and Andrew Mellon.

Overall, okay...interesting story
Revisado: 03-01-19
The main story was interesting and probably an accurate portrayal of life back then. It was engaging and the reader brought much of it to life with accents.
I felt that the inclusion of tangential stories related to Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung didn’t make sense in the context of the overall story...kind of something else going on over here I a parallel universe. It just seemed that this aspect of the story was disjointed and incongruent the main story; and seemed oddly gratuitous with regards to the sexual issues it brought up.
I do feel that the ending was lazy, uninteresting and anticlimactic and I was disappointed how it came to such an abrupt end.
However, it does stir the imagination that is for sure and is descriptive enough to stir the images in ones mind of life during a much different time than we know now.

Historia
Taking place during the most critical period of our nation’s birth, The First Conspiracy tells a remarkable and previously untold piece of American history that not only reveals George Washington’s character, but also illuminates the origins of America’s counterintelligence movement that led to the modern day CIA. In 1776, an elite group of soldiers were handpicked to serve as George Washington’s bodyguards. Washington trusted them; relied on them. But unbeknownst to Washington, some of them were part of a treasonous plan.

Further cementing how lucky we are to have gained our independence. The history of our fight for freedom is filled with close calls, razor thin margins, dumb luck, unbelievable persistence and Divine Providence; that is far too under appreciated in today’s social and political world. Our politicians; so quick to bargain away our rights; essentially trample and spit on the sacrifices these people made to secure our freedoms in the first place. ALL of our rights should be guarded with jealous attention. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel that is how we should honor the sacrifices these people made to give us the chance to live in a free country.
