I enjoyed Gabriel’s Circle of the Ancestors Y.A. novel and this book, Quentin and the Cave Boy, did not disappoint, though it is much more of a humorous a book with a strong element of fantasy. Still like Circle of the Ancestors, it deals with real issues faced by 12 year olds – getting the attention of potential girlfriends, trying to get through gym class when you’re not an athlete, cafeteria food fights, strange teachers, divorced parents, etc. An enjoyable diversion from real life - it made me laugh out loud!

I enjoy Y.A. and found this to be an engaging story. Sam is a wonderful character, a conscientious Cherokee boy raised by his beloved grandmother. His home life is difficult and when he finds this amazing ruby, life gets even more complicated. He persists in dealing honorably with this treasure and the various people he encounters along the way, some devious, some helpful. I just loved the ending so much.

I’ve read (or listened to) plenty of fiction in my life, everything from junky beach books to classic literature. I loved this audiobook. Gabriel is a clever, funny, profound writer who quickly takes you into the inner world of her characters, while taking you on an external journey that kept me listening. Sara’s character comes across very clearly and her transformation is inspiring. Big life changes in middle age are rarely easy and the author treats the challenges intelligently. A really satisfying story. And I enjoyed the narration a lot!

If you could sum up The Secret Sense of Wildflower in three words, what would they be?

Spunky, smart southern girl overcomes adversity.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Secret Sense of Wildflower?

The final scene with her mother is very moving.

Which character – as performed by Susan Gabriel – was your favorite?

That would have to be Wildflower, of course. She's the main character and the story is written in first person.

Any additional comments?

I recommend this to those who are tired of listening to badly written novels and want a lyrical, suspenseful story that is hard to forget. Southern literary fiction at its best.
