Historia
In a walled city of a mile-high iron guild towers, many things are common knowledge: No book in any of the city's libraries reveals its place on a calendar or a map. No living beasts can be found within the city's walls. And no good comes to the guilder or foundling who trespasses too far from their labors. Even on the tower rooftops, where Errol Thebes and the rest of the city's teenagers pass a few short years under an open sky, no one truly believes anything uncommon is possible within the city walls.

Would not recommend
Revisado: 05-16-24
I really struggled with this book. I kept on with it because I wanted to see if it would eventually make sense. While some of the mysteries and confusion was cleared up by the end of the story, I feel like I wasted my time listening to it. Overall - I felt like the story was relayed by a young child who didn't have the maturity or world-view to put the events into context. While the author has built a unique world - there is no description or explanation of any of it. We are just dropped into this world where the struggle to understand where we are and what is happening and what the rules are is real. I'm sorry, I really wanted to like this book but I cannot recommend it for anyone.
P.S. A drawback to listening to this story on audible, versus reading it, was that for a good portion of the book I thought the "House of Thebes" where the story begins was really the "House of Thieves" (because of the title was about a Thief).

Not for me
Revisado: 11-08-23
One of my pet peeves is arguments that happen over and over again - without change in understanding or attempts to see the other person's view or insight into another character. In my opinion, this book is just one long argument between mother and daughter with nothing changing until the last two chapters. The story has an interesting premise, women who are born to be witches on Prince Island. And I kept hoping it would get better. But halfway through I sped up the narration just to get to the end. This book was not for me.

Loved it!
Revisado: 10-02-21
I really really loved this book. I usually do not write reviews, but I have told everyone I know about this book. It was fantastic.
I hesitated about getting the book as most of the reviews were lukewarm. And then when I got the book I was intimidated by its length (25 hours on audible)! But once I started it - I started finding more and more excuses to listen to it!
It's a simple story, a student lost in time and her teacher/mentor's efforts to find her. But wow! The parallels between the middle ages and the future - the characters (some you love and some you hate) - the references to the pandemic (how did the author so accurately portray a pandemic when this was written thirty years ago?). I was immersed in the story and the realization that time travel isn't about where you go or what you see there, but it's about the people you interact with and learn to love. I recommend this book 1000 percent. It is a story I will cherish.

I'm totally hooked on this series and hope the author writes more of them immediately! The author is amazing in his ability to write about time travel and changing the timeline and it all makes sense. Great book!

Historia
You will never read Denny Younger's name in any history book, will never know what he's done. But even if you did, you'd never believe it. The world as you know it wouldn't be the same without him. Denny was born into one of the lowest rungs of society, but his bleak fortunes abruptly change when the mysterious Upjohn Institute recruits him to be a Rewinder, a verifier of personal histories. The job at first sounds like it involves researching old books and records, but Denny soon learns it's far from it.

Wonderful time travel book!
Revisado: 03-11-16
I loved this book! Time travel is always fascinating, but this view into a alternate world where the majestic British rule is fabulous. I especially appreciated the main character's statements to not think too much about alternate versions of yourself or time travel paradoxes, or you'll make yourself crazy. Yes! Just enjoy the story!

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Revisado: 02-12-16
I didn't start out liking this book. I wondered why I had bought a book about such a grumpy old man. Until I realized he had just lost his wife and then I had some sympathy for him. So I kept listening. And then I grew to love this man Ove who had lost so much in his life. He was funny! Even the chapter titles were funny - "A Man Named Ove and a Cat Named Ernest". But the end of the book I was crying, because I loved this man and his story so much. This is going down as one of my all time favorite books!

"You have to kill him." Imprisoned in the heart of a secret military base, Em has nothing except the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain. Only Em can complete the final instruction. She's tried everything to prevent the creation of a time machine that will tear the world apart. She holds the proof: a list she has never seen before, written in her own hand. Each failed attempt in the past has led her to the same terrible present - imprisoned and tortured by a sadistic man called "the doctor" while war rages outside.

Loved this book!
Revisado: 08-16-15
I loved this book! Couldn't stop listening to it. I'm a sucker for time travel, but thought this was an exceptional story. When I realized Em had tried 14 times to prevent the time machine from being built, I felt all the hope and fear that she did that THIS time she would get it right. The relationships between Em and Finn and the Doctor and Marina and Finn and James were so well written, that I could feel them. I would highly recommend this book and will look for other stories from this author.

Revisado: 06-15-15
I really liked this audiobook. Maybe it's because I have a very controlling mother and could really relate to the main character. The aspects of hypnosis and repressed memories, as well as wildlife rescue and rehabilitation made for such an interesting story! I found it very captivating. Can't wait to read (or listen to) all the other books in the series!

Not recommended!
Revisado: 09-02-13
I don't often write reviews. But since I purchased this book based on the positive reviews and I really didn't like it, I feel compelled to state my own opinion in a review.
This book started out great. I loved Cassie - I loved the story from her point of view. But then it switched to three different male characters, which was hard to adjust to. And then it became about the harshness of military training - again, hard to adjust to. The story did flip back to Cassie eventually, but by then I wasn't sure I cared anymore.
I was also frustrated by the naivety of all the main characters (which is a nice way of saying how stupid they are) when they don't / can't / won't realize not all humans are humans. If the reader realizes this within the first third of the book, the main characters should at least pick it up by the first half of the book. But when the main characters don't comprehend this until nearly two-thirds of the book is over, then I question their intelligence. And I don't like brainless main characters.
I believe the book has a strong beginning and ending. But for the middle of the book - when I found myself finding chores to do instead of listening to the audiobook, then I knew this was not a five star read (or even a three or four star). I made myself finish the book (because of all the other positive reviews) but was again frustrated with the cliff hangers in the ending. I will not be purchasing the sequel to the 5th wave. I figure whatever ending I make up in my head will be better than what the author comes up with.

Wow! This was Great!
Revisado: 08-22-13
Usually, I only listen to audiobooks in my car. But this was so great, I kept finding excuses to listen to more of it!
It's been awhile since I listened to my last Kate Wilhelm book. So when I listened to the first couple of chapters of By Stone, by Blade, by Fire, I thought I might have missed a book or gotten something out of order. I had forgotten Kate's style of dropping us into an event or character and then going back and providing the background later.
I was absolutely caught up in the events of this book. Kate weaves a story where I root for the underdog and absolutely hate the bad guys. I love how she weaves the courtroom scenes so that I really care about objections raised and whether the judge will overrule or sustain!
Bravo, Kate! Love love love this story!
