Historia
The House of the Spirits brings to life the triumphs and tragedies of three generations of the Trueba family. The patriarch Esteban is a volatile, proud man whose voracious pursuit of political power is tempered only by his love for his delicate wife, Clara, a woman with a mystical connection to the spirit world. When their daughter, Blanca, embarks on a forbidden love affair in defiance of her implacable father, the result is an unexpected gift to Esteban.

Terrific multi-gen novel that requires flexible thinking
Revisado: 01-13-25
It's only a few years ago I read 100 Years of Solitude and Love In the Time of Cholera which introduced me to magical realism, which I liked bec it allowed for odd, yet, possible happenings in the story. So the promise of magical realism attracted me to this novel, which is also set in a nameless Latin American country in a surreal swirl of time and families. I was glad I went for this book. I thought both narrators were excellent too. I saw another review that was critical of the female narrator but as I have no Spanish, her pronunciations were perfect to me, I felt her reading was crystal clear at all times.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Late 1800s "magical realism" story
Revisado: 01-05-25
First let me say narrator was tops! I knew who most every character was from the way her voice sounded and there were quite a few characters here! Timing and olde English pronunciations were right-on.
The setting seemed "enchanted" to me in 2025, but it took place in what I think was a "regular" setting of the time--- grand houses and not-so-nice places, etc.
Characters were most all reputable ppl who could be very well liked. I liked Joe & Margot "and all the little Margots" and Jonathan who got a 2nd chance at life from his mother.
I grew very fond of Mr.Armstrong but I wonder if such a man of his stature could have been living in an English village in the 1800s English countryside? I loved down-to-earth Rita and decent fellow, Daunt. Was glad the Parson was a kind, patient man.
Because I'm usually listening when doing an activity,-walking dog, making supper, driving-- I sometimes had trouble keeping the characters straight and had to search internet for listening id characters, which worked out ok. Very much enjoyed this book

Historia
Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart - he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone - but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods.

Almost magical realism
Revisado: 12-29-24
Book title caught my eye, as I'm one of those ppl in love with the idea of snow, yet I seriously know I could never make a go of life in 1920s outback Alaska.
Story drew me right in bec the despair of one of the main characters is put out there immediately. I mean, if a character wants to kill themselves right off the bat, where can the story go from there? But the story does go on, into marital discord. It's a different time & place for sure,, but it's stilll a husband & wife sinking into, not "love & hate" but total indifference of not caring about each other at all.
But the couple find each other again when a seemingly magic pixie of a little girl begins to show up from the frozen tundra. They aren't even sure if they believe in the girl themselves, which leads each of them to investigate on their own.
Even when their investigations are settled, the story is only about one-third over, which leaves a lot for readers to wonder about.
The narrator was very good, I thought. Did excellent job in speaking for all characters, male & female, without melodrama. A good read with interesting character studies in an uncommon setting.

Historia
Prickly, wry, resistant to change yet ruthlessly honest and deeply empathetic, Olive Kitteridge is “a compelling life force” (San Francisco Chronicle). The New Yorker has said that Elizabeth Strout “animates the ordinary with an astonishing force”, and she has never done so more clearly than in this book, where the iconic Olive struggles to understand not only herself and her own life but the lives of those around her in the town of Crosby, Maine.

Olive makes me laugh.
Revisado: 08-12-24
I felt like I had a relationship with Olive when I first met her in" Olive Kitteridge." I saw her humanity and her foibles, esp with husband Henry. I was very glad she met Jack and enjoyed him for-- what was it--7 years?
Now in "Olive, Again" she's still making her way in an often-arbitrary world with her offhanded remarks, which at times made me laugh, at times made me cringe. I appreciated Olive for sharing with me these several stages of life near the end of her life and her very candid and honest thoughts. I'm not as brave as Olive, esp in speaking to random people wherever she happens to be, but I like to think that if I met Olive someplace, I would definitely respond to whatever comment she might be making and become real friends with her.

Historia
On a spring afternoon in Athens, Georgia, Ethan Haddock is discovered in his apartment, dead, apparently by his own hand. His fatality immediately garners media attention: not because his death reflects the troubling increase of depression and mental health issues among college students, but because the media has caught the whiff of a scandal. His professor, Dr. Verena Sobek, has been taken in for questioning, and there are rumors his death is the result of a bad romance.

as an audiobook it was confusing
Revisado: 06-27-24
I think reading the physical book of The Professor would have been a better experience due to the subtitles-- Her, Him, and none. There could have been a much more distinctive difference between "Kaplan" and The Professor, e.g.-Kaplan's voice could have used s bit more energy. I was constantly having to look at my screen to check and see which character was speaking, esp towards the end where more action was happening. It was a decent story but a frustrating listen.

Yes, could have been shorter but overlook that
Revisado: 06-12-24
Dislike the quotations at start of chapters, as I have also disliked in previous novels. Thought it started off slowly with Sir Colin Edensor & wife. The following mtg with Colin & sons was more to the point of the issue.
I don't know if "side stories" are necessary in novels, but even if they are, one side story that could have been skipped entirely was that of Littlejohn. I didn't have any emotional tie to that story at all.
Robin's entry into the UHC chilled me and by the end I was practically frozen with fear and apprehension. I don't think this is a spoiler, because I wouldn't expect our beloved protagonist to be killed off, but Robin did suffer greatly and horribly, so much so that I spent a good deal of time sobbing on her behalf.
I've been listening to this audiobook for days but tonight HAD to see how R. would escape. It's now 3 AM and I've regained my composure, as has Robin. Don't know if I'll post a second review at end of the book but I will def muddle through to the end of this book. :-)

Struggling to get past chapter 5, 6, etc. What the heck is going on? reading other reviews I see its all crap in chat rooms or something. Really not fair to write like this and expect translation into an audio book. I don't like it at all. I saw one reviewer said they had to buy the hard copy of book. That's not fair either. Very displeased.

Arrowsmith a hero?
Revisado: 12-06-22
If you like historical fiction, Sinclair Lewis paints vivid pictures of the people and places of early 20th century. Some you love, some you hate. Martin Arrowsmith has a fairly brutal life as a med student (understandable) but also as a full-fledged doctor (who'd have thunk?). Wherever he goes, however, the writing takes the reader intimately along, especially the last part of the book, I was right there in the world of the plague, much to my amazement. You must love or be able to tolerate "the olden days" in order to listen to this book. The many characters and storylines are real and gripping and heartbreaking.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

I guess its got to be 5 stars all-around
Revisado: 09-22-22
Kind of foreign to most anyone who hasn't lived their life in backwoods Alaska. Stange stories & sounds, strange people, strange-sounding narration, but all of this lends to the authenticity of the stories and the book. Another reviewer mentioned frequent use of the f-word as a detriment to many listeners. I don't care for the word but this is who the narrator is, this is who the people are, living in a place most all of us will never even see, much less know. Take the story for what it is and be enlightened by it.

On the surface, everything is all right with Babbitt’s world of the solid, successful businessman. But in reality, George F. Babbitt is a lonely, middle-aged man. He doesn’t understand his family, has an unsuccessful attempt at an affair, and is almost financially ruined when he dares to voice sympathy for some striking workers. Babbitt finds that his only safety lies deep in the fold of those who play it safe. He is a man who has added a new word to our language: a “Babbitt,” meaning someone who conforms unthinkingly, a sheep.

Took me to my grandparents' time...
Revisado: 08-17-22
It's a very well-written story that, for me, never morphed out of the novel that it is-- a story of a man who lived during a particular time and place in America with certain values and morals. Babbitt lived these values and morals with all his thoughts and capabilities.
Everything I looked up about this book before reading starts off with "It's a satire..." on [conformist, materialistic, anti-intellectual way of life.] Even so, who knows who would have been just like George Babbitt in 1922, also seeking to preserve and defend what was important to him and his family and neighbors.
I appreciated being trapped in the mind of George Babbitt for while. I didn't love George but I did root for him to do the right thing. This book took place during the time when my grandparents were young 25-30 year-olds. Neither of them were Babbitts, nor did they live in a city like Zenith, but the values were the same and I think they're still the same now.
