Historia
Based on the true story of Alexander Selkirk, who survived alone for almost five years on an uninhabited island off the coast of Chile, The Mysterious Island is considered by many to be Jules Verne’s masterpiece. “Wide-eyed mid-nineteenth-century humanistic optimism in a breezy, blissfully readable translation by Stump” (Kirkus Reviews), here is the enthralling tale of five men and a dog who land in a balloon on a faraway, fantastic island of bewildering goings-on and their struggle to survive....

A fantastical adventure story
Revisado: 02-04-25
Similar to Robinson Crusoe but more elaborate - imagine a team of five capable men (including an engineer and sailor) who must develop a large but unknown island’s resources. This novel also finishes the Captain Nemo saga in a very satisfying way.
An excellent narrator makes listening to this book enjoyable and compelling.

Historia
József Debreczeni, a prolific Hungarian-language journalist and poet, arrived in Auschwitz in 1944; had he been selected to go “left,” his life expectancy would have been approximately forty-five minutes. One of the “lucky” ones, he was sent to the “right,” which led to twelve horrifying months of incarceration and slave labor in a series of camps, ending in the “Cold Crematorium”—the so-called hospital of the forced labor camp Dörnhau, where prisoners too weak to work awaited execution.

Must read book! As good as “Night.” Terrific narrator, horrifying story, amazing human courage. You will know the holocaust after listening to this book.

Historia
From one of the greatest historians of the Spanish world, here is a fresh and fascinating account of Spain's early conquests in the Americas. Hugh Thomas shows Spain at the dawn of the sixteenth century as a world power on the brink of greatness. For Spain and for the world, the decision to send Christopher Columbus west was epochal—the dividing line between the medieval and the modern.

History I did not know, but now seems essential that I know about Spain’s discovery and conquest of the new world.

It’s pretty long, but all that detail is necessary. It took quite awhile for me to get into the rhythm of this book.

Historia
During the brutal winter of 1775-1776, an untested Boston bookseller named Henry Knox commandeered an oxen train hauling 60 tons of cannons and other artillery from Fort Ticonderoga near the Canadian border. He and his men journeyed some 300 miles south and east over frozen, often treacherous terrain to supply George Washington for his attack of British troops occupying Boston. The result was the British surrender of Boston and the first major victory for the Colonial Army.

Good story but a little tedious
Revisado: 10-05-22
Every student of American history ought to know this story. I very much liked listening but more than of few of you will find it slow moving.

Great book, well read.
Revisado: 11-05-20
The trilogy, of which this is the last book, is outstanding in all regards. I mostly thought American narrators were inferior to British readers but Frank Muller is second to none in that department.
