Historia
The year is 1988. The place, Baja California. And Philip Marlowe - now in his 72nd year - is living out his retirement in the terrace bar of the La Fonda hotel. Sipping margaritas, playing cards, his silver-tipped cane at the ready. When in saunter two men dressed like undertakers, with a case that has his name written all over it. For Marlowe, this is his last roll of the dice, his swan song. His mission is to investigate the death of Donald Zinn - supposedly drowned off his yacht, and leaving behind a much younger and now very rich wife. But is Zinn actually alive?

Excellent
Revisado: 08-27-18
I was excited but a little trepidatious when I found out about this book. With Ray Porter reading and the premise, it seemed promising, but taking on a literary icon can find many wanting.
In my opinion, this flows almost seamlessly from late Chandler. I got a little hung up on age (if Marlowe was 33 in 1936, how could he be 72 in 1988?) but that was really the only thing that stuck out as a raw edge. This Marlowe has seen a lot of bad things and remembers them, and while he doesn’t have the capacity for frequent work, he yearns to be useful again.
There’s something heartbreaking and haunting for me about seeing Marlowe as an old man who is now mostly memories. As a huge Chandler fan, that was a little difficult for me, but this is so well done and Ray Porter gives an excellent performance.

Historia
From the horseback days of the Old West through the gangster days of the 1930s, Hamer stood on the front lines of some of the most important and exciting periods in American history. He participated in the Bandit War of 1915, survived the climactic gunfight in the last blood feud of the Old West, battled the Mexican Revolution's spillover across the border, protected African Americans from lynch mobs and the Ku Klux Klan, and ran down gangsters, bootleggers, and Communists.

Great story, solid reading
Revisado: 03-25-17
I've long been interested in Frank Hamer, and was glad to see someone finally take a deep dive into his story. Hamer is, of course, best known for leading the team that killed Bonnie & Clyde. He also is one of the storied lawmen ever, and there were a lot of stories about him, both good and bad. The author obviously did a lot of research, and spends a good amount of time on separating fact from fiction. That could tend to be dry, but he provides context and flow that makes a compelling story too. Just an excellent bio.
The only negative I'd remark is that, at times, the narrator's timing and intonation seemed off. 5-10 times while I was listening, I had to back up and think through what he'd said because it didn't make sense. Otherwise, I thought the narration was quite good.

Historia
In the LAPD's Open-Unsolved Unit, not many murder victims die almost a decade after the crime. So when a man succumbs to complications from being shot by a stray bullet nine years earlier, Bosch catches a case in which the body is still fresh, but all other evidence is virtually nonexistent. Now Bosch and rookie Detective Lucia Soto, are tasked with solving what turns out to be a highly charged, politically sensitive case.

5 stars and then some
Revisado: 02-06-17
I've always been a fan of the Bosch series, and when Bosch came to Amazon in the person of Titus Welliver, it quickly became an excellent addition to the Bosch universe.
I got very excited then to see Titus Welliver as the narrator for this Bosch novel. He does not disappoint. His pacing is excellent, and he brings the understated intensity of Bosch to life the same as he does on the screen. I found myself visualizing what he was saying in the same style as the TV series.
I may be biased because of the the narration, but I also felt this was one of the better books from a plot perspective as well. I sometimes found the Bosch series frustrating because I would see some bad decision and subsequent fallout coming from a long way off, but the plot on this felt so natural while still maintaining suspense.
My favorite Bosch performance to date (but I've still got two more in queue).

Historia
A resident of one of LA's toughest neighborhoods uses his blistering intellect to solve the crimes the LAPD ignores. East Long Beach. The LAPD is barely keeping up with the neighborhood's high crime rate. Murders go unsolved, lost children unrecovered. But someone from the neighborhood has taken it upon himself to help solve the cases the police can't or won't touch. They call him IQ. He's a loner and a high school dropout, his unassuming nature disguising a relentless determination and a fierce intelligence.

Great narration
Revisado: 01-05-17
As many others have mentioned, Sullivan Jones does a tremendous job bringing the pages to life for IQ. Pacing is perfect, characters are well-individualized, and he just is consistently excellent.
That said, the story is rather meandering and a little predictable. The protagonist is compelling and the dialog is good, but the plot leaves a lot to be desired. This being a first novel, I will definitely check out the next to see how Mr. Ide progresses as a writer.
I recommend this, particularly for the characters and performance.

Very Entertaining
Revisado: 04-07-15
Would you listen to Dog Beach again? Why?
Definitely. It was funny, engaging, fast-moving and keeps your attention.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, it pretty well did. There are so many chaotic elements you aren't really sure how they're all going to play out. There were a couple of times I saw the twists coming but overall it was very well done.
Any additional comments?
This book is a little on the short side (and therefore the audiobook too) but the story was so entertaining it seemed like it went by even faster.
