An important and captivating work of non-fiction everyone should read
Revisado: 04-18-25
Mental health and visual impairment: two vastly misunderstood issues with more stigma than common sense. The author's journey is compelling, poiniant and timely. Her vivid recollections of her time in a mental health care facility are compelling, informative and even entertaining. The first half details the good and bad moments of her life which set the stage for this pivital time. Her narration is nuanced, clinical and almost emotionless to make way for the facts, but with many bursts of emotion and animation which bring life to those circumstances where it is appropriate. As a narrator and voice artist, I can appreciate her divercity. This book deserves to be read, pondered and even studied. It is a story of rezillience, hope and strength which does not and should not elicit pity, but inspiration.

Great concept with an almost successful execution.
Revisado: 03-25-25
Really enjoyed the setup; the book's description had me from the start. I appreciate that what I thought was a glaringly obvious twist was purposefully subverted. I appreciate what was REALLY going on, but at the same time, once you learn the truth, the earlier part of the story just doesn't work as well. I'd still recommend the book if you enjoy this author however.

Do not start with the first book, and you'll enjoy this more
Revisado: 02-14-24
A very interesting concept: part fantasy, part all American terrorist thriller. If you're offended by Christian cymbology far more overt than the Chronicles of Narnia, stear well clear. That said, the Christianness also isn't overly preachy and works very well in the "context of the story. It's a good long read. Just do yourself a favor and start with Black, the second book. It'll make far more sense. I made that mistake and was utterly lost. After reading Green LAST, It all makes sense. Audible should really fix the order here.

Historia
Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

A story this long and slow shouldn't be this good.
Revisado: 12-16-23
I'm of the oppinion — having read many of the lower reviews that many of those who wrote them either gave up on the book, got bent out of shape with the change in a couple accents — jarring, but likely for a good reason — or simply missed the point of the story. Is this a power fantasy? Yes, sort of. But it's literally what the description says: a boy who came from nothing will become a god. This is just another rung in that assention, And I'm absolutely here for it. He is not perfect like some reviewers have said. He's got a lot of faults, despite his growing confidence and extreme determination. Yes his friends are there to support him and have a ton of loyalty, but unlike what some reviewers say, they all have enough personality and — in the case of a few of them — personal issues to work through that they are more than just character archatypes. Here we see them all coming as a team, and after meeting them, and watching Ray get beaten over and over and over in the first book, it makes sense to see him coming into his power. While it's true that considering the length of both books, very little ACTUALLY happens, there's so much witty banter, interesting lore and character interaction that I find this slow burn very appealinggh Even without the presence of the second author, this is a fantastic continuation of the series. I re-read the first in preparation for the scecond, because it had been two years. I enjoyed the first just as much as the last, and enjoyed the second nearly as much. It will be hard waiting another two years for the next. And even though I know it'll probably be another tournament fighter power fantasy, I know there are enough interesting wheels spinning that I know I'll be hear for it.

Historia
For graduate student Jeremy Freirs, citified, cynical, yet prone to daydreams, summer is the time to shed a few pounds and finally get some reading done for a course on Gothic literature. He's picked just the right place: the small, secluded village of Gilead, New Jersey, only 90 minutes from Manhattan but, with its antique customs and clannish traditions, seemingly centuries away. For farmers Sarr and Deborah Poroth, young members of Gilead's fundamentalist community, the summer threatens a conflict between their passionate natures and the stern dictates of their faith.

Great atmosphere throughought, but a bit let down by its conclusion
Revisado: 10-27-23
I really enjoyed the story and atmosphere for the majority. I felt the last several chapters felt rushed however and a little uninspired. Without spoiling too much, characters who have been built up suddenly became little more than puzzle pieces whose time ended abruptly. Perhaps in the horror at its center, that might have been the point the author was going for. Your milage may vary, but I was disappointed with that. Certainly still worth experiencing however.

He actually managed to pull it off.
Revisado: 05-24-23
Not since the Dark Tower have I encountered such a blatant amount of self-reforential author presence. I found it worked quite well, because for a writer , the stories we tell the world are often a way to deal with or make sense of things in our own lives. Writing is selfendulgent, and that's okay. He also just lets the characters cary the story, just like an author often does, and it's more impactful if you listen to the very end. This story is all about the nature of reality, all packaged inside a serving of pure fun escapist power fantasy. I've loved each of the books in this series before I even knew they were connected, and I think one day I'll read it all again with that knowledge firmly in place. This is literary comfort food in the best way. Enjoy it for what it is. Have fun with its humor, it's larger than life characters and disturbing subject matter. It's a self-aware 80s action movie in the way that makes such movies remain in the public consciousness long after they're released, and it has something deeper to say about the nature of reality and creating.

See past the tweets and chats and be Thoroughly entertained for a very long time.
Revisado: 09-07-22
People don't like the chat format in audio. That's too bad. Perhaps it's because I read with text-to-speech on a daily basis, but I found this not only refreshing, but an interesting contrast to the main story. A very long, very drawn out, very tangled story in the best way. Only a successful author could get away with writing a book which could have probably been a third shorter. But all the filler, rather than dragging the story out, really helped flesh out all of the key players, and by the near end of the story, I wasn't quite ready for it to be done. I have enjoyed every one of these novels, and JK/Robert is still going very strong. I always felt an air of mystery with her Harry Potter series, and she has proven she is adept at the genre. I will gladly read whatever comes next, though I suspect the series may be coming to a close after the next book or two. Try to see past the audio tweets. They're really not hard to follow once you take out all the hashtags, @whos etc. Position

Matthew Hanson is a forensic phonetician and the best audio profiler in America. He is able to create a psychological and visual profile of people using only tones, noises, dialects and voice colours. Thanks to him, some of the most dangerous criminals are in jail. Blackmailers, hostage-takers, assassins, the critical evidence that brought them to justice - short audio recordings. Hanson is fascinating, charismatic, difficult to see through. And: he is in solitary confinement.

We need more of this
Revisado: 08-31-22
Sebastian Fitzec has quickly become one of my favorite authors. The only problem, not enough of his books are translated into English. While this story was not written by him, it was inspired, and only makes me want to read more of his books. That said, it's been two years since this came out, and there's no continuation from the major cliffhanger at the end of it. I really want there to be more of this. It was a fascinating story with a few twists I didn't see coming. Very much worth a listen. the only slight down side were some of the characters casting were ... questionable, a couple odd performances too. But I'd listen to it again, and I'd happily continue it.

Historia
Freeman is a genius with an uncommon mixture of memory, intelligence and creativity. He lives in a worldwide utopia, but it was not always so. There was a time known as the Grind—when Freeman’s people lived as slaves to another race referred to simply as “Master.” They were property. But a civil rights movement emerged. Change seemed near, but the Masters refused to bend. Instead, they declared war. And lost. Now, the freed world is threatened by a virus, spread through bites, sweeping through the population.

A brilliant existential crisis dressed up as compelling zombie fiction.
Revisado: 08-26-22
Like the Walking Dead and various other examples, the zombie menace in this story serves merely as a backdrop for the human and otherwise drama which is at the heart of any good story. What does it mean to live? What is it that makes us truly human? Set in 2084 — and not parralelling a certain classic destopian novel in any way, this story bridges the gap between high OctaneAction and a philisophical what-if senario set during the aftermath of a slave uprising. While none of the elements are wholely original, and a certain plot point is glaringly obvious to the poinnt of potential author intent, the charm, wit and intreague Robinson weilds to bring it all together is entertaining, refreshing and fascinating. After reading many of his novels, He is quickly becoming one of my many favorite authors. This was a credit well spentgh Special shout out to the superb narration which goes from analytical and child-like intreague to his signature lively performance in the space of a single plot poinpgh I didn't even realize it was such a shift until it happened.
