The diver perspective - very interesting
Revisado: 11-15-24
Dan Lee has done a good job sharing his experiences, knowledge and wisdom as a recovery diver and technical team member. He was my teammate over the years and is as thoughtful and professional in real life as he self describes in this book. I enjoyed reading (listening) to the lessons he offers with each set of deployments. This book offers a descriptive and frank insight into the world of recovery divers. I’d recommend Dan’s book to anyone interested in becoming a recovery diver or who is simply interested in the lessons from the deep from the comfort and safety of home. A great read.

Historia
At some point in our lives, we have all been lost in a wilderness of some kind - whether literal or metaphorical - without any direction on how to find our way back home. Some have faced survival decisions in community disasters or personal trauma. Some have been lost in work, wandered in careers and professions. Some have been lost in relationships, crippling addictions, health challenges, or grief.

I’m a long time SAR K9 handler and found this read to be profound. It’s a deep read and it’s a side of SAR that I’ve not thought about before. Well written and well read.

Historia
On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused. Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day.

Will to survive comes through
Revisado: 12-02-23
It’s a great story sharing two people’s story of getting lost and how they made a series of mistakes that got them into trouble. It was a little confusing about the timeline for two different lost people. Still, the firsthand accounts from those rescued are rare. I’m a SAR K9 handler and enjoyed this very much.

Historia
As a park ranger with the National Park Service's law enforcement team, Andrea Lankford led search and rescue missions in some of the most beautiful (and dangerous) landscapes across America, from Yosemite to the Grand Canyon. But though she had the support of the agency, Andrea grew frustrated with the service's bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, and left the force after twelve years. Two decades later, however, she stumbles across a mystery that pulls her right back where she left off: three young men have vanished from the Pacific Crest Trail.

Bingeworthy listen
Revisado: 11-20-23
I’m a SAR “professional” and this book did a great job illuminating the other side searches - the family’s. Although critical of law enforcement efforts, it’s a valuable listen to be reminded (could we really forget and need reminding?) there’s more than the missing person at stake. I enjoyed it and recommend to other SAR folks.
