Technology in the book
Revisado: 12-09-24
I was very impressed by the imagination of the author’s presentation of technology used in the story, how knowledgeable he seems to be with explanations of things happening during the plot. As always a great and exciting story. Can’t wait for the next book.

Excellent plot, story line, character development, dialogue, narration. Very plausible technology, action. You get very attached to the crew. Another fine book in this outstanding series. Just about the top of my list of sci-fi series over the last 10-12 years. Totally enjoyable. Can hardly wait for the next in series.

Historia
The Washington War is the story of how the Second World War was fought and won in the capital’s halls of power - and how the United States, which in December 1941 had a nominal army and a decimated naval fleet, was able in only 30 months to fling huge forces onto the European continent and shortly thereafter shatter Imperial Japan’s Pacific strongholds. Three quarters of a century after the overwhelming defeat of the totalitarian Axis forces, the terrifying, razor-thin calculus on which so many critical decisions turned has been forgotten....

I really enjoyed this book with so many details I had never read in all the many books I have read on WW2. Excellent narration. Great insights and accounts of FDRs’ interactions and influences on others. I really enjoyed parts on gearing up the economy for war production. I was disgusted with how so many of the higher government officials were so worried about their power rather than ensuring the best for the country in time of war. And FDR discarded many people after he convinced them to do what he needed doing. Awesome book!

Historia
This landmark account of the U.S. Navy in the Cold War, Who Can Hold the Sea combines narrative history with scenes of stirring adventure on—and under—the high seas. In 1945, at the end of World War II, the victorious Navy sends its sailors home and decommissions most of its warships. But this peaceful interlude is short-lived, as Stalin, America’s former ally, makes aggressive moves in Europe and the Far East.

I’m so glad I bought this! It has so much information regarding evolution of US Naval sea and AirPower into the nuclear age I was unaware of. Plus it has good information about the Korean War and support of attacks on Kimoy by the Chinese. The research done to produce this was so wide and detailed. Good narration and flow of events. I really enjoyed finding out about the many different aircraft the US produced during this timeframe. Plus it went over the nuclear testing in the Pacific. I did not realize how fast technology advanced during’45-‘60, especially the Polaris missile, nuclear powered ships and subs, air to air missiles, and guided missiles, in the 50’s. Plus it gave lots of information regarding the Cold War evolutionary and counter US policies and actions. A must read.

Another great story in the Grimm series. Can hardly wait for the next book. My only issue is I think there was way too much of the story centering around the activities of a young, beautiful female officer who caused a lot of trouble. It took up about half of the first half of the 2 sections of the book and in the end had no impact on the rest of the book. That being said the author kept you on the edge of your seat for most of the book. Mr Berkrot was great as usual.

Historia
Summoned to relieve destroyers that are bogged down by escort duty in the escalating Pacific Theater, the Hayward is met with a rather cold reception. In the eyes of Pacific Fleet sailors, North Atlantic convoy duty pales in comparison to the bloody, carrier-sinking battles of Savo Island and Guadalcanal. However, Atlantic Fleet ships have had to specialize in one thing: anti-submarine warfare. The Hayward is sent off into remote South Pacific operating areas with orders to find and destroy Japanese submarines—but with little expectation of success.

This may be the best of the author’s navy novels I’ve read (most if not all). It’s nonstop satisfyingly exciting descriptions of encounters against Japanese subs. Excellent narration as always by Berkrot.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Tiring concept and plot
Revisado: 03-17-23
The overall concept of transforming the 75+ year old recruits is pretty cool and for what they are designed to do. However, being at first interesting, after a little over half the book it really started to get old--I wanted to see if it warranted my continued interest. I have to credit the author for thinking of the recruit transformation process and of all the many different worlds they attacked and their many species with each of their peculiarities; however, it just became repetitious, boring and kind of silly. I credit him for thinking of all kinds of weird ways each weird species used to defend itself, develop weapons, and to kill human colonizers and transported-in soldiers. Plus, his idea is there are so many sentient beings and habitable planets in our galaxy that it's not too difficult to find places for colonizing the perpetuation of the human species theron. He could be right but I am very skeptical of that idea. I just could not keep reading this and the remaining 5 books. How could he keep up thinking of so many different species and different reasons to deploy these troops?! Don't waste your money/credit.

Historia
War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. The young lieutenant had been wounded and evacuated - but there's no record of him having ever arrived at hospital command.

Good story but not much sci-fi
Revisado: 01-05-23
I kept thinking there might be some sci-fi in the story but it is basically one nation vs indigenous people. Weapons seem mostly typical guns, artillery and anti-aircraft weapons. However, the story was well written and narration very good in the first person. The story is that an "army" veteran colonel gets tagged by the head of space com to investigate the disappearance of the son, on a planet where ores/minerals are being mined against the will of a lot of native species, of a very influential politico of the humans who occupy the planet. As the story unfolds it becomes more and more interesting and intriguing. Characters well developed, good dialogue. RC Bray does his usual outstanding job. I recommend this book.

The Darshik war machine is flagging, but the war is far from over. Even as an exhausted Federation military tenses up for a counterattack after repelling the last Darshik invasion, reports are coming in of a new, more powerful class of ship that's striking deep into Terran space. Captain Jackson Wolfe has been given the fleet's newest, most advanced destroyer and tasked with eliminating this new threat before it can claim any more human lives. What he finds, however, is immeasurably more dangerous than just some new class of starship....

Historia
The Alliance needs to strike back, but the politicians are cowards. Admiral Wit DeBeck has a simple three-step plan to punch the Caliphate right in the nose and send a clear message. Step one: Kick Lieutenant Jacob T. Grimm out of the navy and have him steal his own ship. Step two: Infiltrate Caliphate space and mount a rescue mission on their slave distribution hub. Step three: Get out alive. The only ship that can do it has the only captain with nothing to lose. The Caliphate struck first, but Jacob is going to strike hardest.

One of the best set of sci-fi books i have read
Revisado: 09-19-22
This review is for the Grimm's War series of books. I thoroughly enjoyed all the books story and the narrator's performance. The story line was excellent, it was well thought out, flowed well, excellent character development, action-packed, plausible space travel technology as well as weapons and other technology. The only issue was it was never explained how they could accelerate and travel so fast until there was one sentence in the third book that addressed the lack of gravity on the crew during acceleration and it seemed plausible. After finishing the first book i quickly bought the remaining books so I would have no break in the story after finishing a book. I wished there were more after the third book. Any sci-fi fan would enjoy these books. Outstanding!
