The Third Test is a refreshing surprise in a genre where it’s easy to feel like you’ve seen it all. Alyssa Hazel reminds us that the boundaries of science fiction, and the novel itself, are still wide open. She writes with clarity and sincerity, in the tradition of the genre’s greats. With this novel, she earns her place alongside past masters like Thea von Harbou, whose Metropolis still casts a long shadow. Hazel doesn’t imitate, though, she expands the form in her own voice, and the result is something quietly powerful.
