Historia
Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Revisado: 11-27-24
I had read multiple rave reviews about this book, and when it was on a "2 books for 1 credit" option, I chose it. What a mistake. It came across as sentimental claptrap, and the scene in which Hamnet dies instead of his sister- I found myself thinking "YOU MUST BE KIDDING!!!!" I want to return this book, but since Amazon took over Audible this has become virtually impossible.

Historia
Tara never imagined her introduction to Ireland like this - carrying her mam's ashes to honor her final request: "Tell Johnny I'm sorry.... Take me home." She's never met her mam's estranged brother, Johnny Meehan, who owns an architectural salvage business in Galway. Although Tara is immediately charmed by the medieval city, the locals seem wary of strangers, and a gypsy warns her that death is all around. When Tara arrives at her uncle's stone cottage, the prophesy seems true. A dead man lies sprawled over the threshold in a pool of blood.

not worth the time
Revisado: 09-03-24
Had hopes- Galway, narrator with wonderful Irish accent for Irish characters, unpleasant US accent for the main character- who is distinctly unlikely. Plot= contrived, unconvincing, and comes across as "let's throw in the kitchen sink" whenever at a loss for coherence. Glad to have finished it, will not be listening to another by this author

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

couldn't wait for it to end
Revisado: 08-16-24
I listened to "The Martian" AFTER seeing the film, and projected that experience onto the characters. I had not realized how crucial the actors' performances were. I have hopes for the film that will be made from this, but I plowed through the book only because I had started it, and wanted to find out what happened. That the author does show how painstaking real science is, that you learn things by trying stuff out and learning from your mistakes- ok, useful, important. But the almost endless blow-by-blow got so so tedious.....

held my interest throughout. The idea of re-visiting the case each decade felt new, and added a dimension as characters aged and new ones grew up. Recommend it highly, even if the "surprise" ending felt a little too....cute.

disappointing
Revisado: 04-30-24
I loved Dennis LeHane's earlier detective novels, and Mystic River, and even The Given Day. This one felt so didactic I could barely make it though, had difficulty believing in any of the characters as 3D people. Not what I had hoped for.

Revisado: 12-08-23
I had read the Pulitzer Prize winning "A Midwife's Tale" years ago, so was intrigued when I saw that a novel had been based on it. This was...ridiculous. This author turns this woman's complicated life, marriage, and work into pablum- Martha Ballard becomes a 21st century woman who time-traveled to the late 1700s and has a romance literature sexual bond with her spouse, Then she throws in the kitchen sink to spice it up. Give me a break. Can't believe I listened all the way to the end. At least she gives some disclaimers in the author's note, but ...I am returning this, and will re-read A Midwife's Tale to get the taste of this out of my ...ears.

I couldn't wait for this to end. The author comes across as believing her every thought and feeling and sexual act is intrinsically enthralling to the reader. Not to this reader. Who in the world wants to spend her time reading this stuff? And her narration does not help.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-10-23
I have been a fan of Dennis Lehane from the first, and have liked almost all of his books, including "The Given Day"- the first of this trilogy. This one I found so predictable, with characters and plot points that were .....less than compelling, and often jut hard to swallow. I am returning this book.

In February 1986, the Halland police receive a call from a man who claims to have attacked his first victim. I’m going to do it again, he says before the line cuts off. By the time police officer Sven Jörgensson reaches the crime scene, the woman is taking her last breath. For Sven, this will prove a decisive moment. On the same night, Sweden plunges into a state of shock after the murder of the prime minister. Could there possibly be a connection?
