Could not put it down...but...
Revisado: 04-26-24
This story was definitely one I could not stop listening to. The writing kept you intrigued to dig into the story to know what happens next and uncover the mystery. However, the attempt to shock at the end, also undermined the and betrayed the storyline at the beginning, making it almost not believable. It definitely left me with mixed feelings at the end. I also am not someone who likes an anticlimatic ending, nor do I like when there's no happy ending...that part is just a personal bias. if neither of those things bother you, then this might be the book for you. This is my first book by this author. She writes well, so I hope the twist in here is not a signature part of her books.

Fantastic Mystery!!!
Revisado: 04-25-24
I was not sold by the name, so thank goodness for the reviews! This is one of the best books I have listened to in a very long time! It had all the best components for a book you can just hit play on and get lost in: excellent story line, timing, balance of details, intelligent writing and plot, superb narration. I finished it in 24 hours, because I could not stop listening. The narrator deserves am award for her performance. excellent tonal inflection at the right times. This book read like a really good TV show. Specifically, similar to Nikita back when it started, but in book form and way better. i hwd never heard of this author, but I plan to check out any pther books she has, and will be following this narrator's performances as well. Excellent story.

Such a Great Cozy Read, but the narration...
Revisado: 04-26-23
This is an absolutely perfect little mystery novel. I love it! Rich, interesting characters, a great plot. But the narration made it terribly difficult to follow. The narrator has a wonderful, soothing voice, so she should be perfect for a story like this. The problem is her tonal inflection was off so much in the story. Moments which were written as narrative, she would read as if it were in 1st person from a character with excitement. Other times she would inflect questioning when the sentence was a statement. It was as if she didn't read or do a run through prior to recording this. It made the listening experience terrible as you can't just drift off and listen to this on a drive. I found myself constantly rewinding to capture the intentnof what was just read. It was very frustrating. I'm excited for the second installment in this series, and while it is the same narrator, I hope she improved with this one, or I may have to read that one manually. The story itself is a gem and I hope many more are written.

PERFECT IN EVERY WAY
Revisado: 03-11-23
I absolutely LOVED this. It was just what I was looking for! An easy, breezy murder mystery that had a great plot, interesting and loveable characters, great humor and excellent narration. This book hit all the spots. At first, I was uncertain about the setting being a bakery, but the author tord it in with such a warm and rich history. Such a great plot, kept just enough twists in there for a great mystery, all the while being quirky and funny. They did leave one question unanswered, and I hope thats it part 2. I can't wait to read when it comes out this summer! I am a new fan of Ms. Burns, and a devoted reader of the Baker series, keep em comin!

It's Not Her Best Work
Revisado: 09-12-21
This definitely was not my favorite book in the series, and I struggled to finish as a result. The fact that it followed behind such an exciting read as Black Notice made it all the more difficult. It had a such a slow start, and honestly kept that pace in fits and starts throughout the book.
The beginning of the book was especially bad, being way too into Scarletta's head. As a matter of fact, Scarletta was too into Scarpetta's head in this book. The character became almost annoying.
This book was necessary to build a bridge for the rest of this ongoing story, but I feel it could have been handled much better. It seemed very uninspired, and of the author was just trying to push something out.
The one highlight of the book was definitely the Character Burger. Very well thought out and developed. I will also say that there were some great lines in here where we really see the author's humor, through Marino of course.
Not a terrible book, as it is still Cromwell, but definitely not her best.

The Narration didn't do it for me
Revisado: 06-08-21
I loved this book as a little girl and read it multiple times. However, upon revisiting it as an adult, to share with my son, listening to it was almost unbearable. The narration just took away instead of adding to the beauty of the story. Think I'll just read it

Amazing Storytelling!!
Revisado: 04-12-19
Loved it. finished in 3 days, would've been sooner had I actually been sitting still and. it multitasking. the storytelling is magnificent, the plot, the characters, so full of depth! I was disappointed in how the story ended.
I also love how you can tell the story is a metaphor of current affairs in today's world. She paints a very entertaining picture while also holding up a mirror yet it's so subtle but powerful.
To all the people, mostly those who speak the language complaining about the delivery of the narrator, this narrator did an amazing job in putting you into the mind of the CHARACTER, it's very easy to forget it's the same person narrating all these different personalities. That far outweighs enunciation when it comes to bringing a story to life. I can see how it could be annoying if you're only looking at that. Your best bet if you do speak the language Is pretend that she is in instead speaking something foreign and enjoy the story. The narrator is brilliant and a perfect match to a brilliant story.
