Historia
The story told in Vasily Grossman's Stalingrad unfolds across the length and breadth of Russia and Europe. At the heart of the novel is the Shaposhnikov family. Even as the Germans advance, the matriarch, Alexandra Vladimirovna, refuses to leave Stalingrad. Far from the front, her eldest daughter, Ludmila, is unhappily married to the Jewish physicist Viktor Shtrum. Viktor's research may be of crucial military importance, but he is distracted by thoughts of his mother in the Ukraine, lost behind German lines.

Historia
Few authors write with such sheer love of story and language as T. C. Boyle, and that is nowhere more evident than in his inventive, wickedly funny, and always entertaining short stories. Here are 14 new tales previously unpublished in book form. By turns mythic and realistic, farcical and tragic, ironic and moving, Boyle's stories have mapped a wide range of human emotions. The stories here reflect his maturing themes.

Story books are not for me
Revisado: 05-26-24
First time reading a "story book", and was disappointed at the end of each story; feeling I wanted to know more.
I skipped 2 of them because they didn't hold my interest.
However... I love T.C. Boyle and I think he is a wonderful author and when he narrates some of his books, they truly come alive.

Was looking forward to this, but had to stop after 3 hours. Couldn't take the narrator ..... was so focussed on her, that I now still have no idea what the story is about.

Historia
Things I’ll Never Forget is the story of a young high school graduate in 1965 who faces being drafted into the Army or volunteering for the Marine Corps. These are his memories of funny times, disgusting times and deadly times. The author kept a journal for an entire year; therefore many of the dates, times and places are accurate. The rest is based on memories that are forever tattooed on his brain. This is not a pro-war book, nor is it anti-war. It is the true story of what the Marine Corps was like in the late 1960’s.

Learned and understand so much more. Growing up as a young teenager in the Netherlands during this time, I only heard about the protests in Amsterdam and believed the Vietnam War and everyone participating in it were "bad". Listening to this book by this intelligent, kind and gentle man has totally changed my view; my understanding of this war and it's great sadness.

On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Very much enjoyed this book with it's many details. Can't go wrong with narration by John Lee who brings every book to life.
One of my most favorite narrators. Highly recommend this for WW2 buffs who would enjoy a closer peek into the life of the great Winston and those who surrounded him in the early years of the war.
