Good fun; I could visualize the characters.
Revisado: 12-15-24
Considering that the Cars movies reliy so much on visual art, I was pleased to find that I could thoroughly enjoy the story from audio only. The excellent character voice performances made that possible.

When mystery author D. B. Ziegler is late delivering her book, Abi Schore steps in to help. Surely she can give her favorite author moral support over the holiday break and get the manuscript to her boss at Tea & Sympathy Publishing in time for the new year. When Abi shows up on Ms. Ziegler’s doorstep bearing holiday treats, she’s met by the author’s handsome grandson Dov, who reveals a startling plot twist. His grandmother isn’t able to finish the book and Dov promised he’d complete it so fans won’t be disappointed—a task that’s harder than he ever imagined.

A not-intense but also not shallow book with nice balance of of romance, plot, and holiday celebration.
Revisado: 12-11-24
It is difficult to imagine this story in print, because it succeeds so well as an audiobook. I enjoy cozy mysteries, so the plot about finishing the final book in a mysterious series was interesting. As someone who grew up celebrating Christmas rather than Hanukkah, it was interesting to listen to the particular details about the characters' actions in oberservance of the holiday. Their celebration and observances are realistic, neither formulaic and ornate nor minimal and casual. The narration was excellent. The story is composed of alternating chapters from the two main characters points of view, with the author including difference between the characters' perception of themselves and each other.

This story is or should be a classic.
Revisado: 11-29-24
The narrator was good and and did not detract from the story, but I cannot rate him a full 5 stars. I first read this story as a teenager around 1970, when it was already approximately 10 years old; it has aged well if the reader/listener's mind is not overly enmired in today's socio-technical environment.

I think it is narrated as originally intended
Revisado: 07-03-24
The narrator recites with seemingly authentic Scottish and English accents, and I probably enjoyed the result more than I would have a more neutral accent. The words are always understandable; the written text used word selection and spelling to convey a similar localization and time. I read the book as a youth. The story seemed not too complex for my age and interest at the time. Listening to this narration, I found the story to be sufficiently complex that I wondered whether my younger self was smarter than I suspected. Then I realized that the narrator's use of Scottish and English accents transformed the story to some extent; as a youth, I read with the familiar mental sound of my native mid-Atlantic American accent. For me, the use of native accents added a bit of verisimilitude to the story. There is a bit of Scots in my family history, albeit several generations past, and a few word selections and pronunciations evidenced our Scots and German roots. Finding some of them in both my earlier reading and recent listening to the story was entertaining.

Some Familiar Elements, But an entirely unique story
Revisado: 03-09-24
This is a great first novel. There are some elements that have appeared in many published works, because some familiarity makes a story easier to enjoy, and most authors begin with ideas and bits of stories that they have already heard. A good author will include those bits into a foundation on which he builds his own plot, characters, and story, to make a structure that is solid, appealing, and unique; that happens here, I think the book probably reads well in print, but Scott Brick's narration is excellent, too.

Historia
Laurie Notaro has proved everyone wrong: she didn’t end up in rehab, prison, or cremated at a tender age. She just went gray. At past fifty, every hair’s root is a symbol of knowledge (she knows how to use a landline), experience (she rode in a car with no seat belts), and superpowers (a gray-haired lady can get away with anything). Though navigating midlife is initially upsetting—the cracking noises coming from her new old body, receiving regular junk mail from mortuaries—Laurie accepts it. And then some.

Excellent choice of narrator for voice.
Revisado: 01-04-24
I completely forgot that the narrator was not the author, because her voice and inflections matched the author's expressed personality and text flow so well. There were a few times when sntences seemed a bit stilted to my ear, but I think it might have been the sentences on paper, rather than delivery. The whole piece is a mixture of individual topics and chronological flow that confused me on several occasions (for example, she drives car A, then buys car B, then we are back in car A as the primary and seemingly only car). The publication might be a set of long essays, and the print version might show that; I haven't seen it. Overall, I found the material very good and the presentation excellent.

As with the first book, excellent narration of a Christmas-themed story.
Revisado: 12-29-23
This book is a sequel; although it stands well independently, I think they are more enjoyable if the reader/listener has read/heard the first story. The only negative I have is that the author has written too much similar behavior into the principal character; I don't want to give the story away, but Holly's intelligence and judgement is implausibly marred by not modifying he behavior more after her experiences in the first story. I have abandoned other series because they became too formulaic regarding the characters' behaviors. I enjoy the stories and setting enough otherwise that I will try the third one.

Excellent narration of a Christmas-themed cosy murder story.
Revisado: 12-29-23
I admit that I was primarily attracted by this title being in the Plus catalog. I was looking for an easy-listening story with a Christmassy theme. I really like the genre that is sometimes referred to as cosy mystery, cosy murder, with roots in the English cosy murder mystery. Romance is okay but I don't want explicit sex. This story turned out to be exactly what I wanted to hear, and the narrator delivered perfection. Her use of creative voice enhanced the characters speech and helped differentiate among them. The setting for the story was novel for me, too.

Best audio book I listened to in a long time.
Revisado: 06-29-23
The format is an interviewer (same voice) asking a question or making a comment regarding Dolly Parton's life, career, or music, followed by a response in which Dolly is often expansive, enthusiastic, reflective, proud, humble, humorous, piquant --quintessentially "Dolly". If you have any liking for her or her work, you will find that feeling massively increased. I have always liked and respected her and her work, but I wouldn't say I was a fan. This audiobook wowed me.

Who was the real Marie-Antoinette? She was mistrusted and reviled in her own time, and today she is portrayed as a lightweight incapable of understanding the events that engulfed her. In this new account, John Hardman redresses the balance and sheds fresh light on Marie-Antoinette's story. Hardman shows how Marie-Antoinette played a significant but misunderstood role in the crisis of the monarchy.

I am not judging the accuracy of the book, but its organization. I feel the book is a collection and disgorgement of infomation, without the flow I expected. Too often the content jumped around in time period, and I lost track. I could not stay interested.
