A fairy tale turned dark
Revisado: 03-21-20
What happens when your favorite children’s stories suddenly come to life? A dream to walk in the woods of Narnia or wake up in Abarat, or countless other stories. But what if those beloved children’s stories come to life were suddenly turned dark and tried to kill you. That is some of what we have with Strangewood. With clear influences of Clive Barker throughout this story, if you loved the Abarat stories or The Thief of Always then you’ll probably love this one as well. It’s a boys imagination come to life with a twist. At the heart of the story is a deep pain which adds incredible flavor to the tale. Scott Macdonald is amazing in bringing all of the characters to life. The images are so vivid that you will feel transported to Strangewood yourself. I loved every bit of it. Take the journey to Strangewood, you will not regret it.

Fantastic dark story
Revisado: 03-21-20
This is the second book I’ve read by the combo of Alan Baxter and David Wood. Neither of the books have disappointed. It’s the fourth I’ve read by Alan Baxter and he is quickly growing into a favorite author. I love stories about creepy cults and their machinations of establishing a new world order. Funnily enough those great plans never turn out the way they planned. This book is filled with deep dark magic from the depths of the Appalachian hills with all the backwoods charm that comes with it. I love this short quick read. If you like stories about crazy cults trying to do crazy things this book is for you. Extremely well written as is always the case with these two guys. The narration by Jonathan Waters is fantastic. It’s such a great tight thrill ride. Enjoy a lazy afternoon and give it a listen.

Great fun story
Revisado: 03-21-20
I have yet to read anything by Jeff Strand that I didn’t enjoy immensely. Fangboy is no exception. It’s very hard to be different in a world that doesn’t like different and Strand captures that realty very well in this story. It’s one of those stories where the tension is strong throughout and you just wonder if it is ever going to resolve. Will Fangboy survive the circumstances that are thrust upon him? Will he ever find some sense of normalcy and happiness? I guess you’ll just have to read and find out.
Filled with Strand’s always sharp humor, Fangboy is a fun quick listen that tugs on all the feels. Janine Haynes is fantastic as the narrator. You will not be disappointed in this listen. Give it a whirl. You’ll be glad you did.

Addiction starts like a sweet lullaby sung by a trusted loved one. It washes away the pains of the day and wraps you in the warmness of the womb where nothing hurts and every dream is possible. Yet soon enough, this warm state of bliss becomes a cold shiver, the ecstasy and dreams become nightmares, yet we can't stop listening to the lullaby. We crave to hear the siren song as it rips us apart.

All too real and horrifying.
Revisado: 02-08-20
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this collection of stories centered around addiction. Some horrors are just a little too real and this collection falls into that category. I loved every story in this collection as many of them were written by some of my favorite authors. I loved this collection, but some of these stories were hard to read. They were just soul-crushing in the ways they depicted addiction and the effects that addiction had not only on the addicted, but on all those around them. If the story can suck you in and make you feel everything that the characters are feeling, then you know it’s a good story. That is what this collection did to me. My favorites had to be by Kealan Patrick Burke and John F. D. Taff. I have loved everything I’ve read by those guys and I’ve read a lot by them. Gabino Iglesias’s story was a fun one to read with a different take on addiction. I think the most heart-wrenching stories for me were “Lizard” by Mark Matthews and “Love is a Crematorium” by Mercedes Yardley. Both of those stories will just wipe you out with the heartbreak of broken lives that they portray.
There is not a bad story in this collection. All of the authors are world class storytellers. Visceral reactions await all who dive into this collection, but man is it worth it. Definitely a collection that hurts so good. My suggestion would be to go do something light-hearted and fun after reading this collection to take your mind off this real-life horror. Enjoy.

Some campfire stories are real. It’s been 25 years since Cyrus Hoyt’s infamous killing spree at Camp Forest Grove. A quarter-century since teenage counselor Melanie Holden left him mortally wounded and escaped with her life. Motivated by a lucrative publishing offer, as well as a desire to free herself from recurring nightmares, Melanie’s research into the murderer’s life brings resistance from all directions as she uncovers skeletons in Forest Grove’s past.

Fantastic Slasher. Or is it?
Revisado: 01-28-20
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
With a title like Under the Blade, you have to expect some kind of slasher type story. Right? Well, you might be right and you might be wrong. I am becoming a big fan of Matt Serafini. He always seems to take some traditional horror tropes and put some new spins on them or in this case mashes them up with some other tropes. Chloe Cannon is fantastic as the narrator as well. She really makes the character come alive. Very well done on all fronts.
I never really know how much to reveal about the storyline, because I don't ever want to spoil anything or give anything away. There's a final girl going back to the town where she was almost killed to do a biographical story on how she survived. The problem is that when she arrives, things are not as they seem. It appears her killer from before is still around somehow, but now there is so much more going on. I loved how this story began to unfold in ways I did not expect. You hit a point in the story and, as you might expect, everything blows up in chaos, but not the chaos you might expect. So good. Loved every bit of it. Read Matt Serafini now. On to the next Serafini book.

Struggling Hollywood screenwriter Tom Prentice can hardly believe that the emaciated and mutilated corpse lying on the morgue slab was once his ex-wife. Then his roommate’s missing brother turns up in a local hospital having sliced open his own chest and legs for some sick, inexplicable reason. In Oakland, the Reverend Garner, a recovering addict, leaves his ministry in search of his teenage daughter, who was last seen in the company of her ghoulish kidnapper.

Not my cup of tea
Revisado: 12-19-19
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
Just not a fan of graphic sex in stories especially when it just seems to be thrown in for shock value with no help in advancing the stories or characters. The concept and story itself is not bad, but it's just not for me. The narration is great. Edison does a fine job of telling the story and giving the characters life. If you like graphic kind of horror stories then this might be for you, but it's just not for me.

Promising start to a new series
Revisado: 12-19-19
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
I have to admit that I am a sucker for a good story about dwarves. This is my first book to plow through from D.P. Prior, but it will not be the last. This book was great. It started a little slowly and took a little while to pick up speed, but about a third of the way in, I was hooked. I like my dwarves strong, brave and loyal, just a bit cranky and sarcastic while being filled with life and good humor. This story delivered. The narration by Mike Carnes is excellent. I loved the characters and felt deeply about each of them. I will have to say that Prior left me dangling off of a cliff at the end and now I have to find the next book to see what happens next. Fortunately this is the first of five that are written although the audio is not out for the remaining books. I'm intrigued by the story enough to go a head and purchase the books. Looking forward to checking out the next chapter in the lives of the Nameless Dwarf and his friends.

Fantastic conclusion to the series
Revisado: 12-19-19
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
Now that this series by Taff is complete, I can't wait to go back and listen to it all straight through. there's so much going on through out the story that I'm afraid I missed some things. What a story. Taff has a way of making you deeply care about his characters and then crazy and sometimes horrible things happen to them. He is such an amazing storyteller that you can't help but be drawn in. What he does with fear in this apocalyptic world is unique and I don't recall anyone doing this before. When the genesis of the apocalypse is revealed, fascinating ideas are explored. This is one of those series that would be great to read with others because there are so many ideas that would be fun to discuss. The narration by Linda Jones is so good as always. I love listening to her tell these stories. Buy these books and dive into a unique world. Such great stuff.

Jeff Strand is a master storyteller
Revisado: 11-19-19
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
I am a long time Jeff Strand fan and have read just about everything he has written at this point. He has this incredible ability to suck you in with great characters, an intriguing plot line, dark humor at its finest, and a great care for his characters only to deliver knockout gut punch that will leave you reeling. My Pretties has all of that rolled into one story and it delivers. Someone is abducting, torturing and killing young women. That sounds like the plot line of any number of horror and thriller stories, but this is Jeff Strand we're talking about here. Nothing is really ever just what it seems. You know there is a horrible turn of events coming and boy is there ever in this story. Just when you think this will be a run of the mill serial killer novel, Strand takes a turn that you don't see coming. The story would be great even if it was just a regular serial killer story, because Strand is such a great story teller. Strand is not just regular or ordinary. I have loved everything he has done. His humor always gets me. He makes me fall in love with his characters. He pains me with what he then does to the characters that I care about.
Buy this book. Buy everything Strand has written and enjoy the rides.

The end is near.
Revisado: 11-19-19
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
As I have said in my previous reviews of parts one and two, I love John Taff's writing and have loved this series so far. Nothing changes in that regard with book three. I love the serialization of this story, but it's hard to wait for the next part to come out. By the end of book three you're so invested in these characters that you want to finish the story. What is Adam's end game? Who are Reverend Mark and Monday and what part are they going to play in Adam's journey. As the different groups of characters fight for survival, who will live and who will die? Everyone is fair game.
As people begin to band together and try to create some sense of normalcy and security in the growing chaos, new heroes, or are they villains, arise. So many questions that are propelling me toward the conclusion. I hate to say too much about any of what is going on because I don't want to spoil anything. Trust me on this, once you pick up the first book, you will want to finish this series. Taff is such a great writer and Linda Jones just does a stellar job of narrating the story that you will be hooked early on. Book four just came out, so on to the conclusion. Buy these books. You will thank me later. Can't wait to see how it all ends.
