My sister’s, not Princess Annie’s, because there are no more Audible books about Annie and Liam!

Hey Audible, when can we expect Book 6????

No, my dear, there's one more.
Just one?!? (she packs a lot of energy into her wails considering it's bedtime)
She sighs.
That's okay. We can just read them again.

We started our Audible journey with a narrator who set the bar really, really, *really* high. Her favorite series is narrated by two performers, and she refuses to listen to one of them. My choosy listener was unenthused when I told her we were going to listen to at least one full chapter before she could axe this series, and by then we were both hooked.

Emily Bauer is a talented narrator. Her character voices don't sound like they're being voiced by different performers, but when someone is talking, you have a clear idea who it is from the pitch and intonation of Ms. Bauer's voice. Princess Annie and Prince Liam sound like themselves to us at this point, their characterization is solid. Ms. Bauer's voice is pleasant to listen to (pitch and timbre) and she's a good narrator, even when there's no dialogue her narration is engaging.

The story is also enjoyable. We listen at bedtime, and I find myself saying "okay, just one more section" far too often. That said, if it's the end of a chapter, we're okay with not resetting the sleep timer.

If you're listening to book 3 you're probably already familiar with the series, but in case you landed on the book 3 page first, using the premise that Sleeping Beauty's younger sister (The Wide Awake Princess) is the one to make things happen so that her sister would be woken up before their kingdom falls apart, Princess Annie is a dynamic go getter who makes things happens, while fairy tales happen all around her. Some fairy tales make cameo appearances (the 3 bears in a previous book) others are main characters (Snow White in this book). It's a fun, lighthearted, yet empowering book, fun for all ages.

This is my sister’s favorite book. I couldn’t tell you how many times she’s listened to it.

She gets a kick out of the kids thinking Judy is an alien.

What I love about is that it gave my sister, who is 11, some tools for managing her emotions, especially negative emotions.

I subscribed to Audible to share my love of books with my 10 y/o sister. Our first book was The BFG, which she asked to listen to every time we were together. The Tale of Despereaux didn't hold either of our attentions very well, and we only listened to it at bed time.

The narrator, Graeme Malcolm, was phenomenal. I almost always knew which character in a scene was speaking because his voices and accents were unique to each character, but even the times he was reading narrative paragraphs were full of expression. He was not melodramatic though, and his narration was the reason we actually listened to this book to the end.

The story set up was unique, but ultimately the book was mediocre. The end of the book makes me mentally raise an eyebrow, look sideways at an imaginary friend and say... I can't think of a way to say it without spoilers, but even for a kid's book it was simplistic and completely un-gratifying.

Based on this book:
If Graeme Malcolm has narrated any other books appropriate for my sister's age and emotional development they're going in my wishlist.
I won't buy any other books from this author unless I can borrow them from the library and preview them.

My elementary age sister struggles with reading and hates it. Having been the kind of kid who was reading at an adult level when I was 10 I struggled with how to share with my sister why I love reading, how much books have to offer us, the worlds they open for us. I have never before tried Audible because I have problems with auditory processing, and I don't listen to talk radio, I don't listen to lessons on CDs, and I certainly would never listen to an audio book - I hate to be read to and I'd probably miss most of it anyway!

But then the first couple books in the Redwall series crossed my path at a .50¢ book sale, and I asked some friends who listen to audio books if they thought it might help my sister, and really, with the free trial, I had nothing to lose. During my trial I selected Redwall and was then completely overwhelmed by the thousands of kids books available until I thought to check if The BFG was available. I gave her the choice of which to listen to first, and my sister chose The BFG.

When she was "just" listening she followed along with the book on Kindle, but what I didn't expect was for her to ASK to listen to The BFG at almost every opportunity! While working on a coloring project for school, while in the car, while going to bed - and disappointed when it was time to turn it off! When the book was over she wanted more - and even listened to the last couple chapters a second time!

Another thing I didn't expect is that *I* would enjoy it too. I thought that I would tolerate it for her sake, but I really enjoyed listening as well. The narrator is skilled, very interesting to listen to, does a GREAT job with the various voices (Sophie, other Giants, etc.) and his voice is a very pleasing timbre.

I was planning to end my subscription after the free trial, but based on my sister's reaction I've extended for 3 more months on a deal Audible offered, and if she responds to Redwall and the other books I choose in the next couple months then I may have to find a way to *make* this work in the budget!
