Neil Hellegers is one of my favorite narrators. He doesn't do female voices well, but that said, he wrings meaning out of a sentence, with pauses, intonation, pacing. Sheer perfection. I've been a big fan since The Good Guys and The Bad Guys series.

I listen to a lot of litRPG. It's always wonderful to find something unique in a world or character. An Outcast in Another World offers us uniqueness piled on uniqueness.

First and foremost: it's well written. None of the clumsy translations, repeated phrases ad nauseum, misused words. Well edited. No lazy writing (imho). A couple of times, it took me a second to realize we'd switched to another point-of-view, but that might also have been because I listened at 1.6x speed and had a moment of inattention. Speaking of, Rob (our MC) is the 3rd person point of view for 90% of the story.

It's a progression fantasy with leveling, an underpowered MC who manages to survive despite the odds, in a world that has survived apocalyptic battles and has multiple races trying to maintain peace, where humans were killed off 8 years ago to stop their slaughtering of other races (I think there's more to this story than we know, but that's what we learn very quickly in book 1). Also, elves are mostly shorter than humans, and cover model beautiful. Yet full of insecurities.

Why is Rob one of the best characters I've read in a while?
He's a self-aware 20 year old college student who thinks with the big head rather than the little one, who loves his best friend with the kind of schmaltzy bro-love that I love seeing between guys, and who uses humor, humility and diplomacy to diffuse difficult situations rather than fighting. Rob treats women with respect, has a completely realistic response to being hijacked to another world, and the only too-stupid-to-live actions he takes are when he is sacrificing himself to save others. I really like this guy. Props to KamikazePotato.

As a woman, I'm just gonna say up front, I loved that the main character was a woman and that she had not just common sense but never did anything too stupid to live, didn't play helpless and took care of business. I'm not a mom but I can only imagine how tough it would be to allow your kids to be in danger to help them get stronger. I intend to continue on with the series, though I may take a break from it.

Some things I found myself wondering: Didn't this happen in the middle of the day/week? A lot of moms + dads were home, seemed strange to me that they weren't at work. Also, no air conditioning in summer in the South? There'd have been a massive die-off from heatstroke. Sudden complete loss of communication infrastructure, electronics, etc, again, big-time die-off, right?

I love the main character, though, and I even like her kids. Her three year old is way more mature than any toddler I know -- she'll probably end up the highest leveled and save the world, lol.

Passive protag transported to low-conflict haven

Others have already commented on how apologetic our main character is, and ditto. However, there was some character growth by the end. I think I just wasn't in the mood to listen to meek and mild for that many hours. On the other hand, Hannah Schooner was *absolutely fantastic!!* as the shark girl (cannot remember her name), she killed it, I smiled every time she got screen time. Ear time. Whatever.

I can see why this would be popular. I actually like low conflict. It just didn't grip me as much as I would have liked.

Love a deep male voice but the accent got me

I think this narrator, Jonathan Keeble, is actually fantastic. I have a decent ear for accents, but there was something about the combo of deeeeep base combined with the heavy accent and the unfamiliar flora/fauna/other proper names, that made it difficult to follow the story.

I got the gist of it, but for example, I spent half the story thinking Garrick was calling his employee "a sheila," as in, "a girl" in Aussie slang. I couldn't figure out why everyone else but her got a name and it was kind of making me mad. Finally figured out her name was Ashiela (spelling?).

Also, *full disclosure*, I'm over 50 and there's some hearing loss, so the trouble following the narrator may be a ME thing. That's one reason I rated it 4 stars overall, despite dinging the story and performance.

I did love the repetition of "In a world where I can choose to be cruel or kind, I choose to be kind." Too many litrpgs go all in on the "kill em all and take their core" and I loved the twist on the character trope of a minotaur berserker wanting to be a peaceful farmer, milk his hybrid cows, grow his crops and be left alone.

I probably won't continue with the series because it wasn't gripping me enough, but I think lots of people will love this book and this series.

Todd Haberkorn is an amazing narrator and the only reason I'm forcing my way through the story because I want to know how it ends. It looks Lloyd an embarrassing amount of time to realize what the voice inside his head meant, and no one else had a similar realization about themselves? That's the writer, writing to suit the plot instead of of how people might really react. These are all people who have worked at Demon Mart for years. Faust is a demon. puh-lease, it was infuriating to listen to this. I quit several times and was seriously tempted to go to the end just to see how it ended. I've still got a couple hours left. Pray for me. Not to Angel 8-Ball, she's too full of pride.

I enjoyed the book. Basically an overpowered MC dies and transfers from one world to another, into the body of a dissolute, indebted byblow of a noble, still able to remember his skills and abilities from that old life. I would have enjoyed it more, but the MC is able to beat everyone without effort, and the translator needed to talk to the author about dropping such repetitive gems as "it should be noted", "in all honesty", "as an aside", and "by the way". Especially when used in combination, like for example, "By the way, as an aside, in all honesty it should be noted that this was written by a Russian author."

I love Andrea Parsneau's narration, and the characters were fantastic. I also literally had no idea what was going to happen next. Sympathetic characters, an understandable "regular person's" goal of saving their town, leveling and gaining skills but it doesn't require a stat sheet to be read every half hour, thank goodness. I'm excited (and hopeful) that we'll get a sequel, but it didn't end in a cliffhanger.

A coming of age story for Ahren and a couple of other characters, with a great cast of characters. As the title says, it felt like a bit of a mashup of Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain and a YA-leveled Lord of the Rings. Not in a bad way -- it wasn't cookie cutter copying, but had that emotional feel. I'm 30+ years away from being a teenager, and I enjoyed it. A few odd expressions that were clearly odd translations, but I settled in and enjoyed them.

Wow. The writing here is absolutely fantastic. I love the bit of Japanese businessman culture that is brought into the story, the main character's complete lack of empathy for humanity and certainty he's better than everyone else -- reminded me of Dr. House; and sometimes he's right (and sometimes wrong), the characters... I enjoyed a lot of this. There's no leveling up and system messages, which was actually okay, I just finished one where the stats sheet got repeated ad nauseum; this is more fantasy than litRPG.

I think Seiji might just save his corner of the world and turn it into an orderly, clean, safe place, and I'm there for it.

Also, Haberkorn's narration is absolutely the star of this show.

Trigger warnings for grimdark litRPG

I'd never heard of the Wandering Inn series, or Pirate Aba, but the raving, glowing reviews (and Audible recommending this to me) convinced me to give Gravesong a try. Plus, I'd just finished listening to another audiobook narrated by Andrea Parsneau and been absolutely spellbound by her narration.

The good:
1) The writing is gripping. Especially when brought to life by Andrea Parsneau.
2) Unbelievably fantastic narration (and singing).
3) Characters that are nuanced and real, even those who only get a couple minutes of airtime, like the chef defending the castle.
4) Zombie bites aren't a plague, so you won't turn into a zombie if bitten.
5) It's not a cliffhanger.

The not-so-good:
1) I really, really did not like Cara. Her absolute insistence that no one person can make a difference, that no one can be better than anyone else, that there are no heroes and that magic isn't real, even when she sees the effects of her own singing, her arrogant insistence that only her own form of government is the right one and there can be no redeeming qualities in having royalty and knights even though she's IN A DIFFERENT WORLD WITH MONSTERS AND MAGIC, her self-serving lies, the constant whining about not being able to save anyone because "it's just singing", made for an extremely unappealing character.

2) It felt like bait and switch. The audiobook thumbnail and the blurb make this look much more like a sassy / snarky litRPG with a hottie young ghost in mecca armor being a central figure. That's a big old NOPE. Don't expect humor, sass and snark. The princess is a bit snarky for a few minutes, but it's mostly grimdark.

3) This one needs some trigger warnings: A) There's A LOT of violence against animals and children. B) If you're claustrophobic, you probably won't enjoy the several hours when she spends days trapped in an underground cemetery. C) If you want happy endings for your favorite characters... Think Game of Thrones and know that ain't gonna happen.

(I don't care about the cussing, but if you do, then know that there's some cussing.)

4) It felt like 3 or 4 books were missing from the middle because the last half of the book is a seriously underpowered set of characters fighting a seriously overpowered villain and army in a final boss battle. Think the Alamo but with undead monsters.

5) Speaking of seriously overpowered villains, when I'm listening to litRPG, I've already agreed to suspend reality. However, this one had no consistent rules or boundaries to the magic system. When it served the story, Cara depleted her manna (that happened once). Yet the necromancer had unlimited ability to control unlimited undead, never got tired, never seemed to strain to accomplish anything.

If your jam is grimdark litRPG, you'll absolutely love this one.
