Couldn't stop listening!
Revisado: 10-16-24
It's fascinating to read or listen to a book about events you have lived through. This fictionalized account of a true event really held my attention. I listened to it while knitting and didn't get much else done until it was over. I plan to use it to listen to next time my husband and I have a long road trip.
I recognized some of the characters, even though the names had been changed. Among the more interesting aspects were the descriptions of experiences that radicalized the protagonists and led them down the path to destruction. Something else that connected with me was how the majority of the general public reacted to the events, something we've witnessed during and after the real event. I only wish events of this kind would remain as entertaining fiction and would not break out into reality, as sometimes happens and did to us.
The narrator did an excellent job at the voices. I believe a couple of city names were mispronounced, but I was able to figure out which ones they were, and it did not disturb my immersion into the story.
I will definitely read/listen to more from this author!

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

Historia
They Want to Kill Americans is the first detailed look into the heart of the active Trump-led insurgency, setting the stage for a second nation-wide rebellion on American soil. This is a chilling and deeply researched early warning to the nation from a counterterrorism intelligence professional: America is primed for a possible explosive wave of terrorist attacks and armed confrontations that aim to bring about a Donald Trump led dictatorship.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Must Read for all Americans
Revisado: 11-26-23
Maddow’s usual thorough examination of background information is on full display in this look at American history during our previous flirtation with Fascism. There are many examples of approaches used by Right-wing extremists being recycled today. The story is easy to follow and understand. Highly recommend!

Don’t read this book if you don’t like to laugh or cry.
Revisado: 01-11-22
Wow! I loved the reminders of the great moments in Brooks’ movies, but it was wonderful to get insights into how they went together behind the scenes. The book is also filled with great advice on how to live a happy, productive life. It was interesting, as well, to be reminded of all the things about my childhood that are so different from today. (Now I’m watching all his movies again with new eyes.)

Parfit!
Revisado: 04-20-19
How did I not know about this author before? The story is enchanting, the performance magnificent and the characters believable. There are touches of humor from time to time, which adds to the enjoyment, and cultural details were well-researched. (I learned a term used in dueling I hadn’t known before.) My only complaint was a one-time occurrence of a grammatical error unlikely during the time depicted: using the subjective pronoun “I” instead of “me” as the object of a preposition when connected with another character. It is to be forgiven, as I was taken immediately back into the story.

A Gift for the Senses--All of Them
Revisado: 07-22-16
If you could sum up Thornwood House in three words, what would they be?
Adventure, suspense, romance.
What did you like best about this story?
Beautifully written, suspenseful and adventurous, Thornwood House is an entertaining read that puts you into Australian country life, with all the sights, smells, tastes and other sensations that go with it. Added to that is a dramatic tale of a young woman, Audrey, and her daughter, delving into the unknown roots of the girl's father while attempting to start new lives. Audrey's life intertwines with the life of the girl's great-grandfather and -mother, as well as the intervening generations. Mysteries of a long-hidden past come to light over the course of the story. There are twists and turns, but every new revelation makes sense after what has gone before.
Have you listened to any of Eloise Oxer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to anything Ms. Oxer has narrated before, but I will definitely look for her in other works. She did a beautiful job of portraying the various characters, something I didn't notice until I was done with the book, it was performed so seamlessly.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Could not stop listening.
Any additional comments?
I found this book to be so beautifully written, I would consider it literature...except that it was so entertaining. I will definitely look for more works by Anna Romer.

Beauty and the Beast Revisited
Revisado: 05-27-16
The meaning of the portrait was predictable, but how it would play out was not. Clean romance is so rare these days, and with the addition of adventure and suspense makes a nice story. I will definitely read more by this author. The narration was OK, but occasionally the narrator didn't sound as if she knew which character was speaking. It got better further into the story.
