I lost my beloved dog of 16 years yesterday. The grief is crushing. This book gave some comfort. I will listen again as my grief progresses. Thank you for this.

Humming is awful and too loud

It’s fine until about 25 minutes in she starts humming way too loud for about 5 minutes and it wakes me up every time. Plus it’s just super annoying. It’s just humming. Out of tune humming. Never heard it in ASMR. Such a shame. Then she goes back to ASMR. So I have to set a sleep timer to make sure I don’t get a rude awakening at 25 minutes.

I’m a new software analyst. I put this system to use within OneNote and it has been immensely helpful managing the large amounts of info and multiple simultaneous projects I deal with. He also managed to make what could be a dry topic pretty interesting to listen to. Thank you!

A wonderful introduction for someone who doesn’t know anything about Quaker silence. Beautifully written and narrated. A joy to listen to. I plan to incorporate some of the concepts into my spiritual practice.

Chapters are Now Titled by Species

Revisado: 05-15-20

Most of the negative reviews are because the chapters originally weren't titled by species and they weren't indexed to match the PDF. That has been fixed.

From the phone app you can just click on "Chapters" and scroll to the species of interest. They're organized with Eastern Species first and then Western and within that by bird type (i.e. shorebirds, owls, warblers, etc). It can be a little tedious to scroll through 100's of species, but you can also make your own bookmarks for favorite sections or species so you can jump directly to them.

The app would be even better if the chapters were searchable. I've seen lots of improvements in the app, so maybe this is coming soon. If you're listening from a PC you can open the chapters section while listening and press "Ctl+F" to search for a species.

The PDF is available on the phone app (click the 3 dots in the upper right while listening) or from your Audible library online. Of course, the PDF is easy to search on a PC with "Ctrl + F." There may be a way to search the PDF on a phone, but I wasn't able to do it readily on iOS.

The PDF gives a description of each call.

Example:
"3. Pied-billed Grebe
• Breeding call of the male is a long
series of resonant, throaty notes,
“kuk-kuk-cow-cow-cowp-cowp-cowp,”
followed by soft moans and grunts
• Chatter call is a rapid series of “kek”
notes (example of chatter given
simultaneously by pair)
• In territorial duet, given by pairs early
in breeding season, female’s notes
are higher in pitch than male’s"

The audio quality is very clean and the narration of the species name is soothing. There is no background wind or "white noise" like I've heard on other recordings. The volume level is consistent across the recording. I'm very happy with this title. It's pleasant enough to listen to as I'm falling asleep or to de-stress on my commute.

Reads like wise advice from a good friend

This book is so full of wisdom, I plan to immediately listen to it again. I picked up this book because I'm 35 and starting to feel restless in my career, despite being "happy" with it overall. I got more than I bargained for with this book! Not only did it talk about making changes in your life's work, but also about coming to terms with changes in your appearance, self-image, and sense of value as you enter midlife. I haven't quite started dealing with those issues yet, but I'm really glad to have gotten a glimpse into some issues that may be coming and how to mentally prepare for them. It gave me a sense of hope about aging, (instead of dread) and the sense that life can get better with time.

I love that this book is practical, down-to-earth and not full of "woo-woo," fluffy, feel-good advice. Some other books in this genre venture off into pseudo-spiritual talk about purpose and calling that always rings false to me. I was afraid this might be one of those books. It's not at all. The authors advice is realistic, even a little gritty, and will make you laugh at times.

She also did a terrific job of narrating the book. I didn't notice that the author narrated until after I listened, and I was quite surprised. I came away from the book feeling like I had had a nice long conversation with a slightly older best friend who was sharing a bit of life's secrets on how life can be even better over 40.

I also gained some nice insights into myself. The author does dive into romantic love more than I expected and I was afraid the book was not going to address the area I was interested in - happiness in work/career. Don't worry, the last few chapters really get to the meat of discovering your personal dreams and making practical plans to incorporate them into your life, whether that's in your work or outside of work.

Just before this book I listened to "So Good They Can't Ignore You" by Cal Newport. These two books are very different, but compliment each other nicely. Newport's book recommends caution when "pursuing passion" but shows you what you should pursue instead (and how) if you want to be happy in your work. Sher's book balances that well by helping you figure out the very personal side of your dreams and how to overcome feelings of "it's too late" or "I'm too old." Newport's book also seems to speak more to the new college graduate, while Sher's book gives the perspective that you are in a prime position to pursue a new dream/career direction after 40. So now I can go back to the advice in Newport's book and think "hey, this is for me too."

Thank you Barbara for a beautifully written, inspiring, and helpful book! Now I plan to celebrate my 40th with friends and family with joy and not run off and hide. :)

I’ve read a lot of books on globalization and poverty, but none that have looked at it from this angle. I felt like this was the missing piece to understanding why it’s so hard to make progress against poverty. Yes, this book is sobering, and at times shocking, but it also offers some hope. I feel like it should be a must-read for all citizen anyone who is not them-self trapped in poverty. The only question now is, how can I get involved with working toward the solution?

Graceland is a cultural eye-opener

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-21-07

I would highly recommend Graceland to anyone that wants to get an understanding of the political and social troubles in Nigeria in the 70's and 80's, presented dramatically in a way that will keep you riveted till the end. Even if you have no interest in Africa in particular this is a great story of human struggle. I had trouble listening to parts of the story because of the violence portrayed, and even found myself in tears at a point. So, if you are sensitive like me I wouldn't suggesting listening before you go to sleep. The authors writing style and narrating voice are a perfect fit for the story and really "take you" to Africa. He even mixes in a little "broken" (the nigerian version of English) to make it sound authentic. His reading is at a good pace, it is slow enough to allow me to build the story in my mind, and fast enough to keep my attention. The sample given doesn't show his style throughout the book, it's a piece where he is reading a speakers part through a megaphone, the whole book is not read that slowly.
