I love Frater's zombie Trilogy (that I cannot remember the series name of! As the World Ends?) so I had high hopes for this story. I was not disappointed. I, like so many other reviewers, enjoyed the different take on the "zombie" Plague. I loved the way it ended, Minji's final warning to Alec. The family dynamic was refreshing, and I enjoyed the varied characters' reactions to the apocalypse. We all know that disasters and trials really do bring out the best and worst of people, and Frater did a good job of presenting that idea as well.

Highly disliked the male narrator; he is far too old (or at least his voice is) for the character of Darian. In addition, he reads far slower than his counterpart and sounds like he's trying to channel the spirit of Shatner. I almost stopped listening after his first few lines. In addition, I myself am a self proclaimed geek and have watched Trek, Wars, and Doctor Who. I have never heard the Doctor's greatest enemy referred to as "day-liks." I'm not saying that it's not possible, but I certainly haven't, and yes, I've watched the classics too. That was a huge turn off for me and I did put it to the side for awhile.

The female narrator saves the story for me. Her El is so passionate and so real, and sadly, I can relate to her so well. (Adopted, still abused, but a survivor) She also did her various characters really well, and I enjoyed the friendship that sneaks up on El. There's a nice twist at the end, and overall, I enjoyed the story. Love the ice cream machine reference, and there are a good many more references that the SuperWhoLocks, Trekked, Star Wars fans and even gamers will get.

Enjoy it once ; I am certain I won't be repeating this one.

Honestly, the first 2 or three chapters had me thinking "My God she's a brat!" However, since this is a short story AND a prequel, I kept listening... And I realized that April's reactions and attitude are actually very believable for how suddenly the outbreak occurs and how fast it moves.

I really enjoyed the narrator's voice and performance! She really put feeling into it, and her male voices were some of the best I've heard!

Nice short story with decent action, and it does actually add a bit of resonance (see what I did there?!) to the main character. I will now be listening to the original series, so that I can enjoy the story in a whole new way.

Plot felt too scattered; anticlimactic.

For me, the review title says it all. The narrator was very good, and gave individuals unique voices; she even did male voices in an almost believable manner.

My biggest problem is that SO much of the story consisted of the main character's thought processes and did not seem to stray away from the constant descriptions, hyperbole, and internal arguing of the narrator/main character. To give credit to the author, she did an amazing job of showing the progression of victim to survivor, and as a survivor of abuse, I can tell you that the constant berating & hating of oneself is very true to life.

Luke Daniel's different voices are so very individual that you can almost see the characters he voices. His voice for Bub is so eerily spot on, really gave a great horror vibe. I liked the story a lot, and appreciated the many theories and opinions. I especially liked the choices that some characters made in spite of what they faced. The only reason I removed a star is because I don't feel it bears any repetitive value.

What made the experience of listening to Extinction Machine the most enjoyable?

I already love the stories, but I was not prepared for the PERFORMANCE of the story! The dialogue felt real, and I was able to just picture all that happened with such clarity. This wasn't just an audiobook, it was a dramatic reading.

What did you like best about this story?

I love ALL the Joe Ledger novels! He is so badass and yet such a good man! Everything that I have read from Maberry includes details and explanations that really tie the plot together. In this story, there are multiple storylines that slowly merge to reveal the amazingly climactic finale.
I love the emotion that we get to feel from all of the characters, especially the main ones. I enjoyed hearing Joe's internal discourses with the Warrior, the Cop, and the Modern Man. I think that this is one of the most balancing features of the Ledger stories because when it comes down to the choices that he makes, he has to choose which part of himself will make the decision...I'm trying to think of an allegory....Perhaps if Captain America, Iron Man and Black Widow were actually one person.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Porter really does a great job with unique voices for all characters! He even makes the female voices believable, which is a real issue I have experienced into in the past. I LOVE his voice for Joe, especially his snarky one!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There wasn't really a moment per se, but the attitude that Echo Team brings to the table, the patriotism and heroic sacrifices that they are willing to make feels like a real tribute to the Armed Forces of America. I feel like Maberry wants readers to really be proud of America. In this particular story, we, of course, see the seedier side of our great nation, but we all know that it happens, and this story doesn't shy away from that. It reminds us that there will always be people who will fight to do the right thing for our country.
