Narrator kills interesting story
Revisado: 05-14-23
I wish I could have finished this but I couldn’t. The narrator made every sentence into whining, panic inducing, over reactions. When every phrase is given life or death intensity, it cancels any intensity. There is no buildup, no calmness from the main character, who supposedly captains a space craft. I wouldn’t want to serve under her. Narrator wrecked it. I rarely return but I could not stand it. Disappointed because the story is interesting and I don’t think the character was written quite so unstable.

Historia
In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

Best Horror that I’ve read in years
Revisado: 03-20-23
I didn’t know I was looking for this story. It’s a good tale, human, it deals with loss and the lengths it drives people to. Great location and setting, and the fantastical parts are dealt with flawlessly. It’s as good as everyone says.

Historia
This wasn’t the plan. Judge Herman Calvert, 88, never thought he’d outlive his beloved wife, Marie. Yet now he finds himself alone, a grieving widower, desperate for escape from the home they built together, where every turn brings a painful reminder of his late wife. So the judge retreats to his lake cabin in rural Wisconsin, a place where an old man can find peace and solitude. A place where nature can take its course. But something new has moved in.

I went in with no expectations since I haven’t read any of the author’s other work. It was a very well constructed and executed short story.

Good return to the 80’s
Revisado: 02-05-23
Mr Hendrix really captured the decade well. Really captured young women of that age and time, at least in my opinion. Great narration. I usually don’t care for the lowering of voices from female narrators for male characters and vice versa, it just takes me out of the story but for some reason it worked. I have listened to some of his other stories and thought they were ok. This one made me rethink listening/reading more of his work before I decide if I like his work or really like his work because this was really good.

The title story of this collection - a devilishly ironic riff on H. P. Lovecraft's "Pickman's Model" - was nominated for a World Fantasy Award, while "Probiscus" was nominated for an International Horror Guild award and reprinted in The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 19. In addition to his previously published work, this collection contains an original story.

The old gods, body terror & cosmic horror.
Really enjoyable listening if this is what you’re looking for. I do like the narrator but it tends to be hard to differentiate hard to differentiate between stories when they all sound like the same person. Maybe I’m not being clear.

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Historia
Payatas, a 50-acre dump northeast of Manila's Quezon City, is home to thousands of people who live off of what they can scavenge there. It is one of the poorest neighborhoods in a city whose law enforcement is already stretched thin, devoid of forensic resources, and rife with corruption. So when the eviscerated bodies of preteen boys begin to appear in the dump heaps, there is no one to seek justice on their behalf. In the rainy summer of 1997, two Jesuit priests take the matter of protecting their flock into their own hands.

This story was immersive from the beginning and held up throughout. No crazy action scenes, just well realized characters treated realistically. Not my normal fare but I really enjoyed this and will read/listen to whatever the author releases next.

Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond is the last detective: a genuine gumshoe, committed to door-stopping and deduction rather than fancy computer gadgetry. So when the naked body of a woman is found floating in the weeds in a lake near Bath with no one willing to identify her, no marks, and no murder weapon, his sleuthing abilities are tested to the limit.

Becomes ridiculous quickly
Revisado: 12-13-21
I usually don’t write reviews but this book needs a warning. The woods aren’t a booby-trapped hellscape. Throwing every possible thing at these kids just gets ridiculous. Vines and thorns grabbing and trapping a teenager? Fit teens barely able to survive a few days even though they’re prepared? Come on.
The narrator is pretty standard but the lowered voices for the male characters sounds terrible. Imagine a male narrator using a high falsetto, it’s that annoying. Just read the book. It doesn’t sound like a man or masculine. Listeners can differentiate between male/female characters.
