Historia
Each of the Maguire brothers has his own driving, single-minded obsession. For Jonathan it is his magnificent, talented, and desirable wife, Harriet. For Roger it is the elaborate universe he has constructed in a shed in their parents' garden, populated by millions of tiny insects. While Jonathan's pursuit of Harriet leads him to feelings of jealousy and anguish, Roger's immersion in the world he has created reveals a capability and talent that are absent from his everyday life.

at one point I wondered where this was going. It wasn't boring but I was not at all sure it was a mystery. Then it starts to come together. All the pieces were there for a reason. Brilliant. Give it a try. It's not "all action" like Lee Child but very thought provoking and well written.

This will be the only Karen Rose book I "read"
Revisado: 04-14-15
I would have given this one star but I did finish it because the plot pulled me through wanted to know "who done it". But the love interest subplot, that some mystery writers apparently consider necessary, was just awful. And there was so much of it! Trust me, as a child of the 60s I am no prude but it was couple was unbelievable and not one bit sexy. Just boring. Most of the story takes place over the course of 2-3 days. The protagonists meet early on day one and by the end of day two they are considering spending the rest of their lives together. I could buy "love at first sight" story if the author had been able to create some electricity between the two, but she did not. I ended up just skipped those scenes which is annoying in a mystery as you are afraid you'll miss a clue. Many years ago I was in NYC on business and eating dinner alone in a fancy restaurant. Unbeknownst to me, a romance writers conference was in town and 6-8 of them sat at the next table. They were dissing romance writers who were not there, drinking and laughing at poorly written sex scenes including such characters as "Flaming Tina". This book would have made their list. If you want a romance you might like this. P.S. This is the worst review I've ever given a book. If I don't like it I usually don't finish it and think its unfair to rate the book. This one drove me so crazy I needed to tell someone!

Jack Reacher was alone, the way he liked it, soaking up the hot, electric New York City night, watching a man cross the street to a parked Mercedes and drive it away. The car contained one million dollars in ransom money because Edward Lane, the man who paid it, would do anything to get his family back.

My least favorite Reacher
Revisado: 08-25-14
About 3 hours into this book I figured it out. It took Reacher another 8 hours to "get it". I wanted to scream at him. Maybe other people figure out "the answer" much sooner than I do but I like books that have a bit of mystery to them. This one didn't. That said, I'm a huge Lee Child fan but suggest you try Tripwire or One Shot if you are new to the series.

I remember when it was reported that some Americans got out of Iraq but I had no idea the intrigue involved. It was interesting which countries would not help the Americans. The Canadians were true heroes. Great read.

Well written thriller. You start to question everything and everyone. Keeps you guessing until the end. The author did a great job jumping from past to present. Could have been confusing but was not. High hopes for more from this author.

Historia
Heloise considers it a blessing to be a person who seldom attracts attention. In her suburb, she's just a mom, the young widow with the forgettable job, who somehow never misses a soccer game. In the state capital, she's the redheaded lobbyist with a good cause and a mediocre track record. But in discreet hotel rooms throughout the area, she's the woman of your dreams - if you can afford the hourly fee. For more than a decade, Heloise believed she was safe, managing to keep up this rigidly compartmentalized life. But her secret life is under siege. One county over, another so-called suburban madam has been found dead in her car, an apparent suicide.

The narrator hammed it up a bit too much for me. Good story, keep me interested all along. More of a thriller than a mystery. You can see how it can happen.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

The facts rang a faint bell, the president who was only in office a short time before he was assassinated etc. but I had no idea what a fascinating tale this could be. Interesting personal history, interesting election, great medical story with Alexander Bell thrown in for good measure. Couldn't put it down.

Well paced, good plot. Spoiler alert! Would have given 5 stars but I'm conflicted by the ending. I guess it was the only way it could end, and I was hanging on until the last few minutes to see what would happen. Clever, but somewhat unsatisfying. That being said, read it. Great fun. Well crafted.

It was the standard blackmail scheme. For years, sultry Lysa Dean's name on a movie had meant a bonanza at the box office. Now a set of pictures could mean the end of her career. When first approached for help by lovely Dana Holtzer, Lysa's personal secretary, Travis McGee is thoroughly turned off by the tacky details. But being low on cash, and tenderly attracted by the star's intriguingly remote secretary, McGee sets out to locate his suspects -- only to find that they start turning up dead!

The worst.
Revisado: 05-27-12
This book wasn???t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
People who hate gays, women.
What was most disappointing about John D. MacDonald???s story?
The story wasn't so bad, and since this was written in 1974 it is possible the author is not a complete jerk, but when he starts in on lesbians and the snide comments he makes about minorities and women I started screaming. The love interest was completely unbelievable. I didn't buy it at all. The plot starts off with him being judgmental about sex (a guy? really? about a threesome?) then he hops in bed with . . . (won't spoil the plot if you can't help yourself) and tells us how great older women are. Completely unconvincing. Is he a prude or does he just hate women? All the hype over the release of these books on audio was a huge disappointment.
Did Robert Petkoff do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
How would I know, I was screaming over the author referring to professional women as girls. (It did no distract.)
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Quick Red Fox?
Start over, really.
Any additional comments?
Disappointing. Thought I had a bunch of new mysteries to read. Maybe I shouldn't have started with this one. Are the others better?
