Historia
Known for providing incisive progressive political analysis without being dogmatic, popular radio and podcast host David Pakman delves into the vicious cycle of reactionary political ideology. It's no secret how the right-wing has benefited and capitalized off disinformation and polarization of US politics. Critical thinking and media literacy are on a rapid decline, and our republic is unable to agree upon a shared set of facts. Pakman challenges the right-wing head-on and encourages listeners to understand how the status quo became the status quo.

Former MAGA, Now Mildly Enlightened
Revisado: 03-29-25
I picked up The Echo Machine thinking it was about car mufflers or maybe some kind of Elon Musk invention. Next thing I know, I’m questioning why I ever thought Bill Gates wanted to Bluetooth me through my sandwich.
David Pakman came at me with facts, logic, and just enough sarcasm to confuse my inner Facebook uncle. Halfway through, I took off my red hat—not as a political statement, but because I was sweating from the existential crisis.
By the end, I had deleted eight memes, apologized to a barista, and admitted that maybe—just maybe—George Soros isn’t hiding under my bed. This book is like getting hit in the face with a newspaper… but in a good way. Thanks, David. You broke the echo, and now I only yell at half the news.
Five stars. Would recommend to any cousin who still starts sentences with “I’m not racist, but…”

Saladino defends meateaters with zest
Revisado: 08-18-20
A good defense of the carnivore diet with caveats for degrees of engagement. He argued for regenerative agriculture as our best strategy for the climate crisis. Saladino delivers with the confidence of a seasoned hunter. He argues that the weakness of epidemiological evidence against meat consumption is confounded by healthy user bias and poor glycine/fat balance associated with SAD meat intake. I'm now eating liverwurst with salmon roe, adding heart to my chili, and trying to convince my asthmatic child to eat kidney. Better luck just buying the desiccated organs from heart and soil.

Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

As a 43 year old male, I had never weighed less than 210 lbs. I take no medications and I have no disease or dysfunction. High testosterone was a bonus.

Delayed gratification made easy.
Revisado: 10-21-14
What did you love best about The Marshmallow Test?
My wife and I were completely engrossed in Alan Alda's voice for hours while on a late night road trip. My wife is a kindergarten teacher. I'm in a Master of Science in Biostatistics. We have two daughters ages 6 and 8. This book hit us in three ways: occupation, parental, and self-reflection.
Would you recommend The Marshmallow Test to your friends? Why or why not?
Delayed gratification is a tough sell. We all know its there but rarely choose it. This book gives some good strategies for denying a little today to pay off huge tomorrow.
Have you listened to any of Alan Alda’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No
What insight do you think you’ll apply from The Marshmallow Test?
I recognize my hot and cool reflexes better. I try to develop my cool thoughts by connecting my hot reactions to them.
Any additional comments?
The book does seem to repeat itself. Sometimes you need that to reflect on what was said anyways.
