Years of therapy in a book
Revisado: 02-22-23
I wish I had read this book about ten years ago, but even now it had great value. It really put some things into context that many people are probably not aware of.

Most of us have no idea how others see or process their experiences. And that can make relationships hard, whether with intimate partners, friends, or in our professional lives. Understanding the motivations and dynamics of these personality types can be the key that unlocks sometimes mystifying behavior in others - and in ourselves. This book from Suzanne Stabile on the nine Enneagram types and how they experience relationships will guide listeners into deeper insights about themselves, their types, and others' personalities so that they can have healthier, life-giving relationships.

Misinterpreted?
Revisado: 02-15-23
I am not new to the Enneagram and found about 50 percent of what she said was accurate which reduced this concept to more of a horoscope than has been my experience. Interpretation seemed to be the biggest shortfall. I would not recommend as a 5w4.

Some good, some dangerously bad
Revisado: 09-25-22
As a husband the first half of this book seemed very on point. I found chapter 9 dangerously disordered and it scares me that the message was “don’t ask your husband, just trust us”.
Chapter 7 was also not very accurate and misrepresented the perspective of a husband. This book was far more religious than the one For Men Only, and there were some content choices that were in service of religion rather than factual interpretation. Take the good with the bad, but don’t let the bad feed disorders behaviors.

Decent advice
Revisado: 09-24-22
I listened pretty quick and for free so those were two advantages. There were a few tidbits in there but their interpretation of their data leaves something to be desired. As a husband I felt like about 40-50% of the wife’s characteristics fit me more than my wife. So they may have shoe horned some of them to fit gender norms and roles. It wasn’t so much what they said as what you do with it. If you adapt your behavior where you see value, then it is worth the read.

Is there credible proof that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God? In The Case for Christ, Lee Strobel, former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune and New York Times bestselling author, retraces his own spiritual journey from atheism to faith and builds a captivating case for Christ's divinity. In this revised and updated edition of The Case for Christ, Strobel cross-examines a dozen experts with doctorates from schools such as Cambridge, Princeton, and Brandeis, asking hard-hitting questions—and taking a deeper look at the evidence from the fields of science, philosophy, and history.

Revisado: 03-24-22
If you were a believer you are still a believer after reading this book. If you are not a believer it does nothing to convince you otherwise. It’s a very partial book full of straw man arguments that are easily knocked down by biblical scholars. No counterpoint whatsoever.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Good book but long for value
Revisado: 01-05-22
I often judge a book by the return on investment. You can take 16 hours to listen to this book and take a few things away from it, so maybe every four hours there is tangible value. That’s a low rate for me. If you are brand new to trauma and how to treat it then there will be more value for you, but there was not a lot of new value in this book for me. Good book though, I don’t want to discourage anyone with less experience from reading it.

In Rethinking Narcissism listeners will learn that there's far more to narcissism than its reductive invective would imply. The truth is that narcissists (all of us) fall on a spectrum somewhere between utter selflessness on the one side and arrogance and grandiosity on the other. A healthy middle exhibits a strong sense of self.

More of the same, but this is a good start
Revisado: 03-02-21
I have read several books and other media on the topic so I did not find much value in this book in itself. The biggest takeaways for me were the quiz that shows how much narcissism traits you have and the discussion about echoism. The topic of echoism really could be another book by itself and I would love to see the topic delved into deeper.
If this is the first book you are reading on the subject, there is definitely some value, so I do not mean to discredit the contents. The contents were just repetitive from what I had previously read in other books and did add some additional value.

Historia
The COVID-19 outbreak has turned bedrooms into offices, pitted young against old, and widened the gaps between rich and poor, red and blue, the mask wearers and the mask haters. Some businesses - like home exercise company Peloton, video conference software maker Zoom, and Amazon - woke up to find themselves crushed under an avalanche of consumer demand. Others - like the restaurant, travel, hospitality, and live entertainment industries - scrambled to escape obliteration.

ProfG is great, but content is not unique
Revisado: 03-02-21
I love ProfG, so this is by no means a critical comment. However, if you already consume his various podcasts, then this book really offers nothing new that you have not already heard. Podcasts are starting to become advertisements for their hosts books, and if you are a regular listener there is not much value added in the book. However, if you have not listened to any of his podcasts in the past six months I would give this five stars because it is quality content that is both though provoking and should be part of the public discussion. I enjoy the personality that is displayed on his podcasts and TV show much more as a medium, and I would gladly pay the price of the book for those products.

Somewhat repetitive but good information
Revisado: 03-10-20
The two books are quite nearly the same considering the majority of the content, but there is good information provided in each of them. If I had purchased Out of the Fog by itself I would have requested a refund after reading Start Here. The books focus heavily on romantic relationships where the partner is a narcissist, but you can easily translate the same behavior to any narcissist in your life.
I really appreciated how it helped me to see my own "fleas" and behavior that was resulting in reactive abuse as well as shedding light on how I am likely codependent and I had not realized that. Definitely a valuable read for anyone who has had a narcissist in your life.
