If you could sum up The Final Empire in three words, what would they be?

High Fantasy Apex

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kelsier was definitely my favorite. He had everything taken from him. Anyone in his position would crumble. But he moves forward with a smile. He creates a plan to empower and instill hope in everyone. He has so much power and abilities yet he uses them for good. Definitely an awesome super hero.

Which scene was your favorite?

Oh man there was so many awesome scenes in this book. It was a fantasy action wet dream. I guess my favorite would be Kelsiers final battle with the Steel Inquisitor.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The audio book is about 25 hours or so. If crystal meth were legal and I used it then yes, I would've sacrificed my body to stay awake for 25 straight hours just to listen to this book.

Any additional comments?

I'm not sure how I got through life without listening to this book. If I could have babies with a story this would be the one. Every scene is intricate and well explained. The imagination of Brandon Sanderson is incredible. It really puts other books like Lord of the Rings to shame. The story Brandon creates is dark with a seemingly hopeless world ruled by an immortal dark lord and his overbearing empire. But the story manages to provide just enough light to leave the possibility of a brighter future. The character development is some of the best I have read in a story. There are many characters and they are all easy to remember. The love story between Vin and Elend was really well done. I can't say enough good things about this story. I am now a life long devoted fan. I will most likely now begin making Mistborn costumes and attending ComiCon and FantasyCon in full out geek mode. Mistborn for life!

Would you consider the audio edition of Flicker to be better than the print version?

I only listened to the audio edition so I can't compare to the experience of also reading the print version. I can say that the narration by Stacey Glemboski was top tier and made the audible experience very enjoyable.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I like commander Kane. He was so evil and powerful, like Darth Vader that it helped give a David versus Goliath feel to the story.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene would be after Ember was forced to kill the pilots of the ship that was supposed to rescue her. The footage of the incident was doctored to make her look like a super assassin and then played the footage to everyone in the empire to make Ember look like an empire super weapon. In reality she was a totally cry baby about having to kill the pilots. It was funny how everyone was getting out of her way after that.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did feel an emotional connection when commander Kane had children from Ember's village held hostage if Ember didn't obey his commands. You could empathize with the situation she was put in. Kill strangers as ordered or watch people from her village be executed. That's a tough situation.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this audio book. I felt the overall story was clean. I wouldn't really worry if my kids listened to the story. There was no cussing, sex, or hard violence. If it were a movie it'd probably fall between PG and PG-13. I probably would've appreciated a little more action than there was. I guess that's why I gave the story 4 stars rather than 5. I would say it's more drama than action but the story was still great. The action does pick up near the end for a bit but you got to get through all the character development and drama first. I did like how you were left a little unclear at the end on if the leadership of the rebels really have good intentions or not. It is an interesting twist that leaves you pondering and ready to dive into book 2.

Would you consider the audio edition of Rated R to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version so I can't really compare the print version to the audio edition. I can say that I was entertained with how Buzz Blackburn portrays the characters and their unique personalities.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hands down Sid (Jeremy) was the best. Just your typical super soldier killing machine oblivious to societal norms trying to be a normal guy. The guy was killing since he was a toddler and his first word was kill but all he wants is to work at Game Stop and have central air. Awesome.

Have you listened to any of Buzz Blackburn’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first audio book narrated by Buzz Blackburn so I can't compare to his past performances. I can compare Buzz to the many other audio books I have listened to in the past and say that his performance in my opinion is in the top tier. There were a few times I felt he was just reading a script but for the other 95% of the time the performance was excellent. From the slutty teen voice to the dark baritone super killer voice and to the voice of Sid's blood lust brother Vincent, Buzz did an excellent job keeping all the characters unique and entertaining.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The book was a great action packed roller coaster of a ride with excellent dark humor throughout. It wasn't a drama story with any particular emotional scene bringing you to tears or anything. I suppose the most moving part of the story would be when Sid the super killing machine begins to fall for Lily the high school super slut.

Any additional comments?

This audio book is a really fun listen and had me laughing throughout. I definitely look forward to more books by Mike Leon and narration by Buzz Blackburn. I've read other reviews where the book is compared to a Quentin Tarantino film. It's true. There were excellent corny one-liners throughout. The story even included a weird story line cut-in where Lily the teenage slut was suppose to die and the story line was somehow altered by the strange appearance of Quentin Tarantino. I kind of rolled my eyes at this one but Buzz did a good Quentin impersonation. Buzz also does an excellent Adam Sandler impersonation. Hilarious! My favorite quote of the book, "Now I'm just a threat to myself. Fuck! This is the biggest mind fuck. You are hands down the worlds worst dad." The audio book is a really fun five and a half hour listen. If you don't mind the violence, sex, and profanity (as the title Rated R obviously suggests) then you'll enjoy it.

What made the experience of listening to The House the most enjoyable?

The description of the horror inside of the house was well done and definitely left the biggest impression of the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The House?

When Daniel betrayed the ghost of his dead wife Jacqueline to enter the house to find the heart ripped out of his new found loves dead chest.

What about Rick Gregory’s performance did you like?

I found Rick's voice to be somewhat soothing through most of the story in a strange way making the story feel relaxing but still terrifying at the end. His voice impression of the cult leader dad was the exception to soothing and was definitely terrifying and well done.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it was. The back and forth between Daniel and Justin was a little annoying, regarding Daniel talking to his dead wife, but the tirade did help build some background to the main character Daniel. The story pickups big time when Daniel gets to The House.

Any additional comments?

The imagery was very well done describing the horrors inside of The House. The description of the cult leader Dad was terrifying. You could feel the evil radiating from this character. Well done story. I look forward to the third book The Hell.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would recommend to a friend. I like that is was short and emotionally packed. It is easy to listen to in less than a week's worth of driving to and from work.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the emotional bond built with the main character Marie and her journey of becoming a wolf to find her daughters killer.

Have you listened to any of Joe Hempel’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to The Bridge Chronicles series performed by Joe Hempel. He does an excellent job with this book and is on par with past performances.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The exchanges between Marie and her incarcerated pedophile ex-husband was an interesting and unexpected emotional development.

Any additional comments?

This book is a good listen. I would've given it five stars but what put me off just a tiny bit was the extensive descriptions of Marie's emotions and thoughts. It was very artistic but I personally found it a bit distracting to the story flow on more than one occasion. That's just me though. Maybe you'd love it. The ending is great and unexpected. Totally didn't see it coming. I look forward to more works by Mercedes Yardley. She's on my radar now.

What made the experience of listening to DAVE! (A Novel from the Future) Part 3 the most enjoyable?

The audio book is like a crazy roller coaster ride. It's so all over the place of over the top that it's actually fun and enjoyable.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Starlet is pretty cool. She gets her face half ripped off, acts like it's just another bad day, and fixes it with staples and duct tape.

Have you listened to any of David S. Dear’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to David S. Dear's performance during Dave part 1 and part 2. He is on par in part 3. David performs exceptionally well keeping characters unique and memorable. He adds unique voice inflections that keeps the characters distinct and easy to remember throughout the story. Very well done.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Starlet tells Eric he can shove a pencil in her rear side while taking her from the front side.

Any additional comments?

The Dave series is absolutely nuts crazy. It's crude with foul language, sex, and violence. If you enjoy science fiction mixed with crude humor and a ton of ADHD then you'll like this book. A quote from the TV reporter Chaz Mufflebeard, "This chalk dust is getting all up in me tits."

Would you listen to Nightmares in Analog again? Why?

I probably wouldn't listen to it a second time. Not because it wasn't good, it was really good, but because I've already experienced the unexpected endings.

What other book might you compare Nightmares in Analog to and why?

I don't have another book under my belt to compare to this one. It is unique to me.

Have you listened to any of Aaron Shedlock’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not listened to Aaron's other performances so I can not compare.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Most definitely yes!

Any additional comments?

Each of the three stories Video is Dead, Energy Drink, and The Saltwater Marathon is absolutely gripping from start to finish. It was hard to stop listening for stupid stuff like work and human interaction. The three stories run only about an hour and a half each but every minute is well used. I felt like all the fluff and filler crap of a longer story was cut out and what was left was quality heart pounding adrenaline.

There is cursing, sex, and violence. But not over the top excessive in either department. It's like a movie R rating rather than a X rating.

Aaron Shedlock did a great job throughout all three stories. His character impersonations are very entertaining. He did a great job creating unique personalities for each character. I found myself laughing a few times throughout the story at some of the characters little quirks that the author and Aaron creatively create. It helped to also establish a bond with each character's personality. I did find some of his narration a bit monotone when not impersonating characters but it did not distract at all from the quality of the story.

Its honestly been a while since I've listened to or read scary stories this well written. I particularly loved the visual imagery the author creates of the monsters in The Saltwater Marathon. Google siphonophores and keep that image in your mind for the story. Each of the endings are completely unexpected and satisfying. I look forward to future audio books of Jonathan Chateau's work. Well done.

Would you listen to Heretic again? Why?

Did I regret listening to it? Absolutely not. Would I listen to it a second time? Probably not. Don't get me wrong, it was a great story. I felt like the story was told meticulously enough that I took everything in and do not feel I missed any of the story. So in that sense I do not feel I would gain anything by a second listen.

What other book might you compare Heretic to and why?

This book had a feeling slightly similar to A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley but not exactly. Both books portray a future where people are controlled and the governing body assumes responsibility of creating humans in a factory setting.

Have you listened to any of Sean Patrick Hopkins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to other books read by Sean Patrick Hopkins so I can not compare to his other performances.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A story where Skynet decided human existence should continue rather than be exterminated.

Any additional comments?

Man creates artificial intelligence. Fortunately or unfortunately the initial programming for this AI is built with a foundation for compassion to humans. The AI's intelligence quickly outpaces humans and finds a way to exist independent of human technology. It becomes God like and people are powerless to stop it. Because of it's core programming it determines that humans should not be destroyed but should be managed and allowed to continue living. Wars become non-existent. Murder is unheard of for hundreds of years. Everyone is assigned a purpose. But no one is allowed to think outside the box and pursue their own ambitions. In order to do this the AI, called the Genesis, exterminated certain segments of the population and modifies human DNA over a thousand years to produce a sheep like people. No one is allowed to have an intelligence too high or too low. No one is allowed to have defects of any kind. Traditional reproduction is strictly forbidden punishable by death. Anyone deemed unfit is immediately bound by applications and liquefied in a large glass tube. It is almost impossible to avoid detection by the Genesis. It is everywhere. One man, Caesar, has an ability that has allowed him to hide his high intelligence from the Genesis. He is the only hope mankind has against the Genesis.

This story was extremely engaging. It was not non-stop action but rather more of a deep thinking story full of suspense. The character development is excellent and you really begin to feel what the characters are feeling. The story really makes you think about what the consequences of a truly violence free world might be like. What would be required to remove violence completely from humanity? To do that you would have to remove much of human free will and desire. To ensure people do not commit violence you would have to have complete control of everyone's lives. You could not have outside thinkers or leaders. You could not have anyone too low of an intelligence to not obey all the rules nor too high to piece together their constructed reality. You would have to be always watching and always ready to act and eliminate the problem the instant someone gets out of line. And after that erase the possibility of that person's essence infecting the rest of the population.

Sean Patrick Hopkins did a very good job with the narration. Out of 10 I would give his performance a 9. He kept the character voices unique, energetic, and enjoyable. His performance is definitely near the top tier and keeps you engaged. I can't give a ten though as I've heard a very impressive narration or two that is hard to beat.

Definitely a great book to enjoy. It feeds the mind. I look forward to the second book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It is an entertaining series with excellent imagery.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Copper's Keeper?

Copper reaching out of the ground and dragging the FBI agent to her possible doom.

Have you listened to any of Jake Urry’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not listened to another audio book from Jake Urry.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction, nor did I laugh or cry. I was impressed with the imagery that the author creates.

Any additional comments?

There were three things during the story that put a few pebble's in my shoe. I'll get those out of the way up front. First was the phone conversations. For some reason it just really bugged me that there were so many phone conversations in the story and the reader only hears one side of it. I would've been more content if I could hear both sides of the conversation. Second was that it was a bit difficult to follow what was going on. Maybe it's my ADD but I found the story switching around a bit too much for me with a few too many characters. Third was a few instances of female impersonations by Jake Urry. There was a few times where a woman would be talking to a man and the woman's voice would be deeper. It confused me and I had to do a rewind to make sure the character really was female.

At first I was skeptical of Jake Urry's narration during the first part of the story. His voice is much more different from the many other narrators I have listened to. However, as the story continued Jake Urry really grew on me and I now have a complete appreciation for his style.

Without giving anything away, the story is entertaining. It is scary with a little gore but not gory like a splatter punk novel. A.I. Nasser does an excellent job with imagery. The story was told elegantly such that A.I. Nasser paints a very descriptive picture of each scene with his words. In some of the darker scenes the imagery is so well described you can genuinely feel the terror.

I would've given the book five stars if it weren't for the few "pebbles" I described above.

What made the experience of listening to DEAD: The Ugly Beginning the most enjoyable?

If you're a The Walking Dead fan like I am then this story will likely entertain. Its a story of individuals and groups around the globe surviving the zombie apocalypse.

Would you recommend DEAD: The Ugly Beginning to your friends? Why or why not?

Depends. If they got nothing else to do but listen then yes. If they are trying to listen while doing other things then maybe not. The story line is all over the place. I found it difficult to keep track of who was who and where without taking notes while listening and pausing to refer to notes.

Have you listened to any of Andrew McFerrin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first book from Andrew McFerrin so I can not compare.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Zombies and people that might survive.

Any additional comments?

My first impression of the story is that is was way too fragmented. I was being pulled from one individual or group to another individual or group every four or so minutes during some parts of the story. I have to say it was hard to follow when you are trying to get to know characters but jumping to four different locations and groups in a twelve minute period. I had to take notes to make an attempt at recognizing who the author was referring to.

The character development could be better. I felt there was really only one character that had a good background developed enough to build an attachment with the reader, Melissa. The girl who was fat and everyone made fun of but who then turned her life around and lost weight. I though she might turn out to be a winner in the story with such a good character development. But she was killed off just after I built a bond with that character. The rest of the characters didn't seem to have a solid background built to establish a strong connection with me. It was more of this is what the person is doing now but you don't really get to know who the person was before like with Melissa. Maybe this wouldn't bother other people but it bothered me. If Melissa wasn't killed off I could easily refer to her as the story jumps around. Oh yeah that's the chick that was fat and is now a hottie, I remember her. But nope she's dead and the rest of the characters didn't get the same character development so I have trouble recalling who of the crowd of other characters is who half the time. You do start to recognize who the main characters are as the story gets about half way through. A good handful of people in the story have a short story and then die. As the story continues you recognize who the main characters and main groups are.

The story does pick up as it moves forward. It gets really interesting near the end. I did enjoy it enough that I would like to continue into book #2. It's gory, it's nasty, and it's violent. It portrays the natural human core when society and laws collapse. Lots of blood and gory deaths? Check. Sex slaves? Check. Human survival? Check.

The book is worth listening to if you're a zombie fan. Be sure to take notes though, and lots of them, as it will be hard to follow who's who otherwise.
