Just didn't grab my attention
Revisado: 01-31-25
I got 1/3 of the way through this and gave up. New characters kept getting introduced and the story/plot was hard to follow. Things seemed to jump from here to there and the world building made no sense. Pass.

Ambrose wakes up on the Coordinated Endeavor with no memory of a launch. There’s more that doesn’t add up: evidence indicates strangers have been on board, the ship’s operating system is voiced by his mother, and his handsome, brooding shipmate has barricaded himself away. Not really a M/M romance
Revisado: 12-01-22
I liked this book. I didn’t love it. The repetition of the plot after a fashion became a little tedious, only making me think “OK, let’s get to it“. Finally, the ending is revealed. But at that point, it’s wrapped up so quickly . I would have liked to have seen the plot continue beyond where the story ended. Overall, it was an OK lesson. The only thing that annoyed me about the performance was the readers insistence on pronouncing every T and D loudly.

What a novel approach to a sci-fi theme
Revisado: 06-28-22
[I finished this book a while ago, and just realized I had never reviewed it.]
This was a great book, from concept to character development. I really enjoyed the two main characters' relationship. There was a lot of science-y stuff that weighed the storyline down a little, but overall it added to the believability of the plot. Interesting ending. Not sure how a follow-up could manage the resolution.

Not so happy I bought the bundle
Revisado: 06-28-22
This book was okay Not sure I enjoyed the author reading; an obviously older British man reading about a 16 year old boy and his sexual exploits was a little off putting. Actually all the sexual content was lukewarm. As a 16 year old I remember being horny all the time but I didn't jump in bed with all my friends, and I certainly wouldn't leave stained sheets lying around for my mother to wash. The ending was decent, but clearly written as "Stay tuned for Book 2". Not going to rush into that one though.

What happened?
Revisado: 06-28-22
*SPOILER ALERT* We all lived through the pandemic. I didn't realize when I bought this audiobook it was going to be all about "us versus them". Don't we have enough of that already? I also agree that the same material was repeated over and over. We got that Gamache was having a hard time zeroing in like he usually does, but I got tired of hearing about "the thread". As she's done in the past, Louise Penny only brought up at the very end that Abigail's father "knew how she was". Nothing before indicated that, as was said 1000 times, Paul loved his daughters. Nothing. Even when the murderer was revealed the reader was still left wondering "wait, why?" Really disappointed and nervous about the next book.

Good story, but not really an M/M book
Revisado: 03-30-22
I really liked the story and bought it because the coming of age/gay element seemed interested. Quite honestly the story would have stood on its own without it. If Nick and Steven had just been friends and the last chapter left off the plot wouldn't have been detracted from at all. Just have a realistic expectation as to what the M/M aspect is (it doesn't go beyond hand holding and one chaste kiss).

Relatable story, very well written and performed
Revisado: 11-10-21
I didn’t realize when I purchased this book that it was as short as it was. The storyline appealed to me, and it didn’t disappoint. The plot is relatable whether you are gay or not, and speaks to generational issues regarding acceptance and responsibility.
Quite honestly, I’m sorry that it was a short as it was. I was truly enjoying it.When it came to the end, I was disappointed, really wishing the story would continue to go on. Although in thinking about it, the story had been told to it’s just conclusion.
Definitely recommend.

If the intent was hating the characters...
Revisado: 10-09-21
I truly don't know how to review this book. It was completely disturbing and unsettling. The wording, syntax, meter all combined to create a horror story of a different nature. There is so much hate and anger, false betrayal and feigned affection. I truly just wanted this book to be over. I don't know what I was expecting as the story unfolded; what I was hoping for. Whatever it was it never appeared.
I guess that if the goal of an author is to stir up emotions then Micah Nemerever did an excellent job. The title truly says it all: Violent Delights: How can something violent be delightful, and how can something delightful be violent? The juxtaposition is reflective of the story and is used throughout the book: hate/love, rejection/attraction, depression/elation, and on and on. So many times during the story I found myself confused. Other times I was annoyed. Yet other times I was exasperated. I just wanted to the story to end.
It's true that all fiction cannot be unicorns and rainbows. These Violent Delights is certainly evidence of that. But it's a story that stays with you, leaving you feeling uneasy and somewhat disturbed. Not what one normally expects to take away from the average novel.
Would I recommend the book? Yes, in audio format (Michael Crouch does and outstanding job giving voice to Julian and Paul!). Just know what you're getting into. Be prepared to completely hate the book like I did. And by hate I mean love.

Historia
Isaiah was Samuel's and Samuel was Isaiah's. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. In the barn they tended to the animals, but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. But when an older man - a fellow slave - seeks to gain favor by preaching the master's gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own.

Don't know why I didn't love this book more
Revisado: 09-02-21
Having read all the raves I downloaded this book. As others have said it is written in a very lyrical style that, at times, I had a hard time following/understanding. I never felt this was a "love story" in the traditional sense. It was almost as if Samuel and Isaiah served a purpose for each other. Truly, though, the stars of the book are the women both past and present. That element of the book was woven together well. I felt like all the other "storylines" were very secondary.
Hard to say if I would recommend this book. With all the praise it should be a slam dunk. For me, I just can't say why it's not.

Dragons are on the verge of extinction, and if we don’t find the divine omegas? We’re doomed. In 300 years, I’ve never come across even one. Until I meet...him. Haiden is sweet and a little broken, and his fragile smiles make me yearn to claim him as my own. Gets repetitive
Revisado: 06-28-21
I bought the bundle thinking it would be a good way to listen to the series. The first book was good. The second was fine. The third was okay. The fourth was...ugh. Why? Basically each book is the same story with slight changes here and there. Change the main characters names and modify the plot slightly. By the fourth book I could have told you how the story was going to go. It got so I didn't even bother with the remaining book.
The performance was also not terrific. Gabriel tries to modify his voice for each character but a lot of the time it doesn't work. He also portrays the omegas as completely whiny to the point of annoyance. The alphas are all the same.
Finally, the authors repetitive use of certain words and phrases was almost laughable: "swallowed thickly", "smelled delicious", "my mate/he's mine". The sex was interesting, but happened only once in each book - which of course got the omega pregnant. After that you never hear about the couples having sex again. Which is fine.
The story held my attention with the first two books, but by the fourth I was guessing (usually correctly) where the story would go.
