3 star book; 5 star reader

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-21-10

- I wish I cold give it 3.5 stars

If you are a big Urban Fantasy fan, and don't mind more teen geared books, this is a good audiobook for you. If you are a very picky listener, and you only like the best the genre has to offer, move to something else.

I like L. J. Smith (don't love). The recent books she added to the Vampire Diaries series are the only ones i think excellent. This series is above her average, but not all that memorable. I enjjoyed them, but I douibt I will listen to them again next year.

I LVOE Kristine Hvam and any charaters she ever creates I inevitably love. Becasue of her, I found these books very enjoyable to listen to.

This series is very reminiscent of old Lois Duncun Books (I know What You Did Last Summer; Killing Mr G.=riffin). L.D. had a book this reminded me of, where teens who found themselves being used for nepharious purposes by a boarding school for the "talented". But it was different enough that I wasn't bored.

This Trilogy is much better than original

I can't believe is it the same writer. Obviously, L.J. Smith has grown enormously as a writer. The characters are far more multi-dimensional and the plot is less predictable. World building is phenomenal. And I am officially kind of in love with Damon. Who would have thought!

When is Midnight coming out on audio book? I can't even imagine it without Rebecca Mozo's terrific narration.

Confessions of a Shopaholic Audiolibro Por Sophie Kinsella arte de portada

Starts off vapid, but good in the end

Total
3 out of 5 stars

I have been considering this audiobook (and book before then) for a while. I saw the film trailers and had resolved not to read listen to it until it went on sale for $5. I am very glad I changed my mind. The book seems little like the movie actually.

Note that it starts off a lot more vapid ( and sometimes painful) to listen to than my typical threshold, but makes up for it by being always funny and eventually getting to a message that is both spot on and not overly preachy. So in the end, I felt less guilty for having read/ listened to it.

This audiobook is a funny and a terrificly honest portrayal of the most acceptable vice in Western Culture, materialism and consumerisms. The reader, Emily Gray, has impecable comedic timing. I would love to listen to her read another book.

Sadly, some of the narrator's unwise purchases and ways of thinking about spending have crossed my mind (e.g. seeing a great sale on an expensive designer it as "an investment" and "saving money"). Of course, it goes just over the edge of normal spending (though without realizing it I think Sopie Kinsella does a spot on portrayal of OCD).

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, Book One) Audiolibro Por Suzanne Collins arte de portada

Everything good Sci Fi should be

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 02-12-10

I got this on the recent series book 1 sale, and within moments was completely hooked. The characters and world are carefully drawn, feel real, and ring true. This dystopia is oppressive and cruel in the extreme, but I think has flaws parallel to ours and therefore holds a mirror to our own culture's flaws. So as you read a gripping page turner, expect to need the occasional moment of reflection. Everything good Sci Fi should be!

I LOVED this

The reader sounded just like I imagine Jane would have. Truly remarkable audiobook. I had tried to read this a few times, but never got far. Within minutes of listening to Amanda Root, I became wholly lost in Jane's character and surroundings. I could';t put it down.

Dull

I just couldn't get into this. I gave it a fair shot. Maybe 1/4 of the book? I just couldn't bring myself to care about the characters, the plot, or even the setting, which should have been at least moderately interesting. Oh well.

Books 3-4 are worth listening to books 1-2

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-29-09

I think the appeal of these to adult readers starts at book 3. I think Book 1 is a bit overrated by itself. There is little to no plot until the last 1/3 of the book The major mystery up until then is "what os Edward?" and we all know what the answer to that is form the first page, so... let's just say it is a bit dull and derivative for a while.

But books 3 and 4 are really fun and well worth the reading of the first two, slower books. I overall give the sires a 4 star rating, with 3 for 1-2, and 5 for 3-4.

Engrossing, Detailed, Dark and Romantic

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-28-09

I love this series. I am almost done with book 2 and can barely put it down. It did take some doing to get through the first 3 chapters, but it is well worth it.

It is a lot more graphic in the sexual content department than other adventure novels I have read, but it still is a far cry from being a prototypical "bodice ripper", as another reviewer quipped. The plot, setting and characters make this a terrific novel in its own right. I am not a fan of the romance genre in general, but am not opposed to romantic content, (which this does indeed have in spades). However, it also had adventure, political intrigue, and the Sci Fi genre's favorite paradox - time travel, which turns out to be more than just a method of getting a modern woman into historical Scotland. As other Sci Fi stories in this vein, it grapples with issues like "if you could go back and change it, should you?" along with delving into the potential consequences of doing so.

If you plan to take a trip to Scotland, or have any other particular reason to learn more Scottish history, this is one of the more interesting way to go about it. I certainly am absorbing historical details better than I have in any history classes.
