I didn’t love it

There are multiple reasons I didn’t like this book, but I believe the book itself was pretty well written. This is the third book of Emily Henry’s that I have read and I genuinely really enjoyed both of those, so this one feels really disappointing to me. I don’t like flashbacks in books, which is definitely just a personal preference thing, and I also don’t like the “I’m in love with person x, but they are unattainable so I’m going to try to make it work with person y”. It’s just too heartbreaking and angsty, and honestly it’s not fair to any of the people involved. I know these are just book characters but I tend to get really sucked in, so I honestly just found it depressing, despite the HEA. I liked the character of Poppy, and I liked the character of Alex, but I didn’t like their journey.

This isn’t one of Nora’s best. It’s okay, but the Witness, the Liar, and the Collector were all way better. It’s worth a read, but the narrator was hard for me to listen to. The way she pronounced Malachi’s name was grating. From what I listened to, she switched between American and Irish accents well, but I couldn’t get past the pronunciations. I was surprised because all of the reviews I read praised the narration.

I’ve been a fan of the Argeneau books for several years now, and I’ve generally always enjoyed them. But there’s something about this one that has really let me down. First, love triangles aren’t my favorite. I’m not a fan of Bricker’s or Raffaele’s books for this reason either. Also I love GG in the other books so I was excited that he was going to get his own lifemate, but... he acted like the giant child Juan compared him to. And Ildaria or Angelina, whatever her name is, just didn’t click for me. I don’t know. As much as I’ve always enjoyed this series, I think Lynsay might be running out of things to write about.

I really liked the premise of the book so I was excited to start listening to it. The narrators both do fine job, their tones are great, etc.

I wasn’t able to finish the book. I made it to chapter 29 and had to stop. My problem is with the writing. Like I said I was Intrigued by the premise, but it was so repetitive. It felt like every 20 minutes the guy said or did something to offend the girl. He said something mean to her, she got offended (naturally). He was being threatened by her friends and he tried to play it off like she was off limits, she got offended. He said something about her being underage, she got offended. He was talking about how he liked her but she was 5 years younger (22 to 17 almost 18), she got offended. How many times can one woman get offended by one man before either character figures out they aren’t going to work? Maybe it was just that the main female character really was acting her age and she wasn’t mature enough for this relationship (totally possible) but it just felt too forced.

Also, there are about 15-20 different characters that you have to keep track of their relationships and feelings towards one another. You get to know a character and they disappear. Random characters appear out of nowhere. It just wasn’t for me.

This book was hilarious. I laughed so hard during multiple parts of this book and I don't know if it was the narration, which was great, or the book itself, or if it's because I am a German teacher. but oh my gosh. I about died in this book, and even though I finished yesterday, I think I need to listen to it again.

What did you like best about this story?

Ich habe das Buch auf Englisch und auf Deutsch gelesen. Es ist vielleicht auf meinem Top 10 Buch Liste.

What didn’t you like about Christiane Marx’s performance?

What did you love best about The Collector?

Let me start off by saying that I am a huge Nora Roberts fan. I've read most of the books she has ever published, including the In Death series. While I love the predictable happy ever after books, I was very pleased with this one. It was a break from her usual shorter story. Was it horribly realistic? Maybe not, but it could have been if you were one really unlucky- or lucky, depending on the perspective- person.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ash was definitely my favorite character. He just did what needed doing, regardless of what everyone else thought, much to Lila's consternation. He had this way of manipulating people, especially in his family, that was fascinating. I just loved him.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The first time I listened to this book I couldn't turn it off. Now if I am scrolling through my library and looking for something to listen to, this is my default book. I've listened to it maybe 15 times now, and I just can't get enough of these characters and this story.

I liked the story and the narrator. I thought she did a pretty good job of accents. My only complaint is the less than two minutes of "Australian" near the end. Not Australian but still a really good performance.
