Historia
This powerful, intensely dramatic book is the definitive account of the Haitian Revolution of 1794-1803. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of master toward slave was commonplace and ingeniously refined. And it is the story of a barely literate slave named Toussaint L'Ouverture, who led the black people of San Domingo in a successful struggle against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces and, in the process, helped form the first independent nation in the Caribbean.

Revisado: 04-10-23
One of my fav parts of Black Jacobins has been all the letters Napoleon's brother-in-law sent him from Haiti that were like "Everything is fine. We're winning. Send 20,000 reinforcements and supplies and someone to replace me or I am going to hang myself in public."

Historia
Goddess of Anarchy recounts the formidable life of the militant writer, orator, and agitator Lucy Parsons. Born to an enslaved woman in Virginia in 1851 and raised in Texas - where she met her husband, the Haymarket "martyr" Albert Parsons - Lucy was a fearless advocate of First Amendment rights, a champion of the working classes, and one of the most prominent figures of African descent of her era.

don't let the libs write about radical's.....
Revisado: 04-28-21
Why in the world someone who thinks "terrorism" is "bad" would write about Parsons, I can't even guess. While she was flawed for sure the author makes wild guesses about her life at times, whenever the chance to smear anarchy appears
the narrator stumbles quite a lot as well

Intruiging writing of the angry discontent
Revisado: 02-25-21
It's flawed, a bit wordy and ranty when it could more succinctly explain many of its points. Its seems unsure if it wants to be an impassioned outraged cry or plain political theory and gets kinda lost. Still think it provided enough of an interesting perspective to give my recommendation.

Historia
In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order.

The kind of book that changes you
Revisado: 02-25-21
Amazing! You'll be shocked by this book. Its a bit challenging, but many of your impressions of global politics will be called into question in undeniable ways. Even if you aren't very familiar with any of the examples of the 50s-80s that the book focuses on, you will no doubt see the tactics through which narratives are warped familiar from your own casual news reading.

Conspiracy theories are killing us. Once confined to the fringes of society, this worldview now has adherents numbering in the millions - extending right into the White House. This disturbing look at this alt-right threat to our democratic institutions offers guidance for counteracting the personal toll this destructive mindset can have on relationships and families. Author David Neiwert examines the growing appeal of conspiracy theories and the kind of personalities that are attracted to such paranoid, sociopathic messages.

I've seen some other books delve more deeply into these topics, but if you want to understand the origins of the modern wave of conspiracy theory, and also how to best broach the topic with a troubled family member or friend, this is the book for you.

Written during the 1940s and early 1950s, when Baldwin was only in his twenties, the essays collected in Notes of a Native Son capture a view of Black life and Black thought at the dawn of the civil rights movement and as the movement slowly gained strength through the words of one of the most captivating essayists and foremost intellectuals of that era.

Revisado: 02-25-21
So much is discussed in the several essays included its difficult to describe. The narrator does very well capturing both Baldwin's dry wit and sorrow. James Baldwin's writing is gripping, truthful, painful, so excellent at placing you into a new perspective that I couldn't stop listening.

Historia
A report on how the greed of a privileged few, subsidized by public funding, creates substantial profits for themselves from mass human suffering. This was a speech given by General Butler during a nationwide tour in the early 1930's, but it applies even more today! Listen as he frankly discusses, from his experience as a career military officer, how business interests commercially benefit from warfare. He then suggests several practical solutions for reducing the pillage.

Extremely impactful and still relevant
Revisado: 02-25-21
I'll start by saying, yes, this is only an hour long, but if both this version and the other narration are typically going quite cheap so relatively you're probably still at least getting you're bang for your buck.... be certain not to go using a credit on it though.
Love how the narrator's passion that brings Butler's anger to life. After a long successful military career he was made to rethinks the reasons he was sent to all those battles in the first place. The motives of all the many global conflicts America involves itself in. So who truly benefits from war and how? That is what he seeks to outline in this essay.

Historia
Plotted in secret, launched in the dark, John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry was a pivotal moment in U.S. history. But few Americans know the true story of the men and women who launched a desperate strike at the slaveholding South. Now, Midnight Rising portrays Brown's uprising in vivid color, revealing a country on the brink of explosive conflict. Brown, the descendant of New England Puritans, saw slavery as a sin against America's founding principles. Unlike most abolitionists, he was willing to take up arms, and in 1859 he prepared for battle at a hideout in Maryland....
