Historia
When Tiro, the confidential secretary of a Roman senator, opens the door to a terrified stranger on a cold November morning, he sets in motion a chain of events which will eventually propel his master into one of the most famous courtroom dramas in history. The stranger is a Sicilian, a victim of the island's corrupt Roman governor, Verres. The senator is Cicero, a brilliant young lawyer and spellbinding orator, determined to attain imperium - supreme power in the state.

Excellent political drama. masterful character writing
Revisado: 12-18-24
I enjoyed this book thoroughly from start to finish. The narration was wonderful. The characters felt very real and the twists and turns kept me very engaged throughout. While it is historical fiction, it has brought about a new found interest in ancient Rome for me. Excited to see what happens next!

Historia
When a viral apocalypse kills 97 percent of the people on the planet, the survivors' humanity is hanging by a thread. Amid the leftovers of civilization, ex-Army Ranger Jason Larsen is reminded of the meaning of hope, family, and loyalty by a dog and a young boy who are as alone as he is. The survivors he seems to collect become family, and that is very bad news for those who think they run the apocalypse.

great characters and well written action

really enjoyed the focus on characters driving the plot. the focus on small personal and emotionally deep stories that interconnected to push the plot forward was refreshing in a sea of bloated 'save the world' sci-fi.
excellent narration as well

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

some cool moments, but I'm almost finished and can't tell you what the plot is
Revisado: 04-18-24
overall the performance was good and I enjoyed the dark nature of the book, but outside of a few scenes throughout I was quite bored. the characterizations also felt all over the place too
also the overly descriptive sexualization of a 12 year old girl in a few very strange and uncomfortable moments really killed what little interest I had in finishing the book.

To make the experiment work, they just need one last recruit: an ageing schoolteacher whose late mother was the foremost expert on the mathematics of paradox. 2028: A young woman goes into surgery for routine brain surgery.

Historia
Jimmy Martin has a sore head. He's used to smuggling illegal data in his headspace. But this is the first time it has started talking to him. The data claims to be a distinguished academic, author and civil rights activist. It also claims to be a bear. A bear named Honey. Jimmy has nothing against bioforms–he's one himself, albeit one engineered out of human stock–and works with them everyday in Hell City, building the future, staking mankind's claim to a new world: Mars.

Uneven narration quality, paper thin plot, and characters I don't care about
Revisado: 01-25-24
I'll preface this with saying I'm a big fan of the author's work and with Book 1, Dogs of War. Rex, Dragon, Honey, and Bees were solid and likeable characters, with unique voices/perspectives that I had never experienced before. The side characters, villain, and plot were also all very engaging.
Bear Head started with a cool premise and set up, but really lost me on the journey; filled with unlikable or uninteresting characters (save for the assistant with a human collar, Carol), a meandering and uninteresting plot that really disappointed given the interesting set up and elements, and a rushed and very anticlimactic ending.
The narration is very mixed as well. On one hand the original actors from the first book are back and they're mostly delivering good performances, but the actress in particular reallllllly took me out of it anytime she did voices that were not her narration voice (which I thought was stellar in Dogs of War).
It was also very jarring to hear totally different character inflections and accents when the same characters were performed very differently by each actor.
I really wanted to like this book, but for the reasons above I just found it a slog to finish.

My name is Rex. I am a good dog. Rex is also seven foot tall at the shoulder, bulletproof, bristling with heavy calibre weaponry and his voice resonates with subsonics especially designed to instil fear. With Dragon, Honey and Bees, he's part of a Multiform Assault Pack operating in the lawless anarchy of Campeche, Mexico. A genetically engineered Bioform, he's a deadly weapon in a dirty war. All he wants to be is a Good Dog. And to do that he must do exactly what Master says and Master says he's got to kill a lot of enemies.

Unique concept, great execution. Solid narration
Revisado: 09-17-23
Discovered Tchaikovsky from his book 'Children of Time'. Just like that book, he does an excellent job characterizing non-human characters in a believable way. The narration, especially for the bioform characters, really elevated his writing as well and made me fall in love with Rex, Honey, Bees, Dragon, and the others.
Really looking forward to listening to the 2nd book in this series!

Very much a 'middle book'
Revisado: 04-27-23
I continue to enjoy the world and the performance. Some characters are very engaging and likable, but I find the Queen in particular to be very unlikable even though Tau is supposed to have a connection with her.
The plot moved at a snail's pace. Everything to do with the demons is VERY interesting and exciting, but the politics and religious aspects just feel half-formed and really slow things down without adding much.
I do want to praise the performance again though! Excellent acting and characterizations

The best elements of GoT and Gladiator
Revisado: 01-26-23
Narrator was fantastic. Each character was very distinct from one another, and really brought the violence and emotions of the characters to life.
The magic system and the way the Dragons are incorporated into the world and story are very well done and interesting. Doesn't feel as derivative as some other dark fantasy series.
Spoiler: The demons were a great element. Their physical descriptions and violence reminded me of Berserk. Excited to see more of them.

Historia
At first, Logan Ramsay isn’t sure if anything’s different. He just feels a little . . . sharper. Better able to concentrate. Better at multitasking. Reading a bit faster, memorizing better, needing less sleep. But before long, he can’t deny it: Something’s happening to his brain. To his body. He’s starting to see the world, and those around him—even those he loves most—in whole new ways. The truth is, Logan’s genome has been hacked. And there’s a reason he’s been targeted for this upgrade.

familiar Crouch style, but disappointing
Revisado: 10-23-22
I'm a really big fan of Blake Crouch's work; Dark Matter and Recursion are two of my favourite books. Both of those books made me feel very connected to the characters throughout the entire journey, but I found myself not invested in Logan or his relationship with his family by the end.
I was somewhat invested in the early part of the story, but once the *SPOILER* 'Upgrade' happens to Logan the book started to really lose me.
Short version: Too much robotic/scientific exposition. I never felt any stakes because Logan had plot armour as the only key character, and his family was never really in danger at any point. There were not enough characters in the plot to break from the monotony of Logan explaining 'science' or his long monologues explaining exactly what was happening and why. There wasn't a satisfying conclusion.
I'll still look forward to Blake Crouch's next book, but this one was a bit of a let down overall.

Excellent pacing, great world building, unique characters, and fantastic narration by Gaiman made this such a joy to listen to. I wish there were more stories to experience in this world.
It has a cozy, whimsical feel to it that reminds me a lot of how I felt going through the Harry Potter novels.
