I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

Well executed twist
Revisado: 01-16-25
The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden is a gripping psychological thriller that keeps you hooked until the very end. The story follows Millie, who takes a job as a live-in housemaid for the affluent Winchester family, only to find herself caught in a web of lies, secrets, and manipulation. From the moment Millie steps into the Winchesters' home, the tension is palpable, and you can feel that something isn’t quite right.
What I loved most about this book was the twist—it’s so well-executed that it completely flips your perspective on the story. McFadden does a great job building suspense and throwing in subtle clues, but when the reveal comes, it still manages to surprise you.
The narrator brought the characters to life, capturing Millie’s unease and the sinister atmosphere of the Winchester household perfectly. The pacing and delivery added an extra layer of tension, making it even harder to stop listening.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers with unpredictable twists and a dark, unsettling atmosphere, The Housemaid is definitely worth your time.

Historia
To the children, the town was their whole world. To the adults, knowing better, Derry, Maine, was just their hometown: familiar, well ordered for the most part. A good place to live. It was the children who saw - and felt - what made Derry so horribly different. In the storm drains, in the sewers, IT lurked, taking on the shape of every nightmare, each one's deepest dread. Sometimes IT reached up, seizing, tearing, killing....

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 11-18-24
IT by Stephen King is a wild ride of terror and nostalgia, but it’s also a bit of a mixed bag for me. Set in the small town of Derry, Maine, the novel follows a group of childhood friends as they confront a shape-shifting, fear-feeding entity that often takes the form of a clown named Pennywise. Alternating between their past and present lives, the story explores themes of friendship, trauma, and the enduring power of fear. The way King builds tension and fear is absolutely chilling. Honestly, I got so freaked out at first that I had to take numerous breaks from reading.
IT is a hefty read and sometimes drags with overly detailed descriptions or subplots that feel unnecessary. And while the supernatural horror is chilling, the real-world horrors—like bullying, abuse, and prejudice—are what make the story truly unsettling. By the time I hit the middle, though, the pacing dragged a bit, and I found myself getting bored. I switched over to the audiobook which helped me get back into the story. But that ending? I really didn’t expect it, and honestly, it felt way too cringy for me and I am glad it’s over.
Still, there’s no denying King’s ability to create a vivid, creepy world and unforgettable characters. The Losers’ Club is the heart of the story, and their bond makes you root for them through all the madness. If you’re up for a mix of supernatural horror and deeply human struggles, this book is worth the time—just be ready for some weird turns along the way.

Maybe it was a grandparent or a teacher or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching and gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly 20 years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you?

Heartfelt
Revisado: 11-18-24
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom is such a heartfelt and emotional read that I found on a list of "must reads" and rightfully so. It’s about Mitch, who reconnects with his former college professor Morrie, now in the final stages of ALS. Through their weekly visits, Morrie shares his thoughts on big life topics like love, work, family, and even death. The way he approaches these topics is so raw and real that it makes you stop and think about your own life choices.
What I loved most about the book is how simple yet impactful it is. Morrie’s wisdom feels like it’s coming from a place of pure love and experience, and you can’t help but feel comforted by his words, even though the story is bittersweet. Mitch’s writing lets Morrie’s personality shine through, making it feel like you’re sitting in the room with them.
This book really stays with you, reminding you of the importance of human connection and focusing on what truly matters in life. If you’re looking for something uplifting and thought-provoking, this one’s worth the read.

Loved the fantasy part
Revisado: 11-11-24
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is a compelling addition to the fantasy genre, weaving a world brimming with magic, dragons, and high-stakes adventures that will appeal to fans of mythical lore. Yarros does a fantastic job building an intricate world with vibrant settings, thrilling battles, and awe-inspiring dragons. The fantasy elements kept me turning the pages, as each encounter with magic or a dragon was a treat that deepened the book’s allure.
However, the romantic subplot between the main characters felt overly trashy, with certain exchanges and dynamics that veered into the realm of cringeworthy. At times, the relationship’s over-the-top intensity detracted from the story’s more captivating fantasy aspects, making it feel somewhat disconnected from the rich world-building. The romance didn’t resonate with me and nearly pushed me to put the book down.
Despite this, Fourth Wing still offers a unique fantasy experience for readers who enjoy epic worlds and mythical creatures, and it’s worth picking up if you’re in it for the dragons and adventure alone.

Soothing and informative
Revisado: 02-05-24
This has been my first “self-help” book in a while and I quite enjoyed the audio book version. The narrator’s voice is so soothing and fits perfectly with the message of the book.
The seven steps being discussed are as follows:
1. How Should I Spend My Time?
2. Do I Need to Be a Leader?
3. How Can I Live A Truly Creative Life?
4. What Do I Do With Emotional Pain I Can’t Get Rid Of?
5. How Can I Move Through My Grief?
6. How Can I Feel Less Alone?
7. How Can I Access Deeper States Of Love for Myself, and Others?
Each one of them are quite something and a lot to think about. I especially enjoyed numbers 2 and 3, but got a bit “lost” so to speak during numbers 4 - 6, mostly due to some of my own experiences. I will definitely keep this one on hand and listen to it again after processing some of the thoughts I’ve had along the way.
All in all it was an easy soothing listen with a lot to think about.

Not bad, but I got bored.
Revisado: 02-01-24
To me, this one wasn’t as good as his debut novel, The Life We Bury. Or I just liked that one too much, I couldn’t give this one a fair chance.
This follows the story of Alexander, a suspected fraudster cop whose life is spiralling out of control. He comes across a new case that might fix his reputation, but got a bit more than he bargained for. Along comes big brother Max to assist.
The story itself is not bad, and the characters start off strong. I just lost a bit of interest near the middle, but I still believe in Allen Eskens as a great writer and already added more to my TBR list.

A lot of twists and turns
Revisado: 01-26-24
At first I was a bit sceptical since this is a book about a couple, their issues and affairs, which is not typically the types of books I go for. However, when you get to part 2 there are enough twists and turns to keep your attention straight up to the end.
It was a bit of a strange experience since this is the first audio book I’ve listened to that had numerous narrators and some strange sound effects. But in the end I quite enjoyed it and I do recommend it if you just want to have a casual listen while doing some other tasks.

Brilliantly narrated
Revisado: 01-24-24
This is my first book of Allen Eskens and I can’t believe this one has been released so many year ago and I only now got my hands on it.
I listened to the audio book on my commute to and from work and I must add, it was brilliantly narrated. Will definitely go look for more done by Zach Villa.
The story follows a struggling college student juggling life with his alcoholic mother and autistic brother having to do a project where he needs to write someone’s biography. He ends up meeting Carl, a dying man recently released from prison where he did time for rape and murder. He later confides in Lila, his neighbour, who helps him solve this mystery. A unique story with great character development.
Allen is indeed a fantastic writer and story teller and I have already added the rest of his books to my TBR list. If this is his debut novel, it can only get better from here!

Lighthearted murder mystery
Revisado: 01-22-24
A lovely lighthearted book about a 3 generational dysfunctional family. The characters are well planned and all play their part it making this work. Lana, the posh grandma from L.A., Beth, the hardworking single mother who does everything herself and Jack, the fun loving granddaughter make a mean team in solving a murder.
The main focus is not really on die crime part, but rather the reconnection of the three woman, Lana being the star of the show. I empathised and I laughed and truly enjoyed this story.
I do recommend reading the author’s note on what inspired this book as well.
